Upgrading Stock Battery

Hi everyone,

I feel the need to upgrade my stock battery from the 75ah 650A to something a bit more beefy.

Reason being I am going to be installing 4 LED work spotlights on soon.

Any advice on what size I should or shouldnt go up to?

Sorry I am a bit of a noob to this.

Kind regards,

Daniel

PS. My engine is the stock 4G93.

The power of your new light and how long you are going to use them will help to determine what would be best....without those, it is nearly impossible to give any proper advices.

light

No appologies needed :)

I am no sparky but here are some basic, other might correct me if I am wrong.

What you need to calculate if your battery is enough is how much you are going to draw on it.

This is first calculated with the Wattage and the Amp. Your wattage here is 18 Watt x3 = 54 Watt, to find the Amp you divide your Watt by the voltage, here 54W / 12 Volt = 4.5 Amp.

Then how long my battery will last ? if your battery is 75 AH, you can "safely" draw half of that and not damaging the battery and still start the car (should anyway) so half of 75 AH is 37.5 AH usable, to find how long you can use your light (54Watt) divide the AH usable by the Amp, here 37.5 AH / 4.5 A = 8.3 hours. The 8.3 hours is how long your battery should last while using your light with the engine off. If the car is running, the alternator can supply power to your light without any problem.

Please note that draining your lead acid battery too much too often will shorten his lifespan.

These are some basic but battery age and condition can change the result.

Battery like the optima yellow top can be drained more and not suffer and they do recharge a lot quicker. I did fitted a D34 in my io, mainly to feed the winch if needed.

Also do a test at home with your light "on" and see if your car still start. A battery pack could also help to start the car if you battery is drained out a bit too much in the middle of the bush, something like that or other brand http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/NOCO-12V-400-Amp-UltraSafe-Lithium-Ion-Jump-Starter-LVGB20/SPO4115966  I like those as they are conpact and work well.

Plenty of info on the net, and I am sure a few other will give other advices....

Awesome! That has indeed shed

Awesome!

That has indeed shed some "light" on the topic.

I will have a look what good batteries I have here in Mauritius. I mean there are the brands like bosch, varta etc here so I am sure I can find something that will work the juice as needed.

I was hesistating of placing a second battery just to avoid the oops moment when I need to start.

Many thanks for the guidance.

Kind regards,

Daniel
