Front end Rattle.

Hi Forum Members,

I have a 1999 io 5 door auto, 4G93 1800 cc motor, H76W.

I replaced the front struts a few weeks ago as one was faulty and noisy. This did not stop all the rattles coming from the front of the vehicle. On getting underneath and checking for anything that could cause a rattle, the only thing that i could find with any movement in it was the left side inner CV joint. It has quiet a bit of movement in it and actually rattles when moving the shaft up and down and will need replacing. Question is, would this cause a rattle as I believe it would be under stress when the vehicle is in motion. Has anyone else had a front end  rattle and found the inner CV joint be the problem or should I be looking else where.

Cheers

CV joints rarely rattle.

A worn CV joint will typically run very quietly unless it is loaded and at an angle, the inner CVs rarely run at an appreciable angle, so those are even less likely to be heard.  Is your iO full time 4WD or does it have the "super select" 4WD system?  If it's the super select, do you run it in 2H or 4H?  I'd say the odds of the problem being the CV are quite slim.

When exactly is the rattle heard?

Thank you for your reply. My

Thank you for your reply.

My io has 2 & 4WD but we hardly ever get it out of 2H as most of our driving is on sealed roads, i occationally take it for a spin on a dirt road and enguage 4WD just to give the working parts a bit of a spin so as to keep them in working order.

If i grab the inner CV and give it a good shake it does make a simular rattle to the one I am hearing but that is when vehicle is stationary and I think that when the vehicle is in motion this may not happen; this was why i was asking.

The rattle is heard as soon as i hit a bit of rough bitumen or gravel but not on anything smooth. The CV's do not make any nocking noise when turning as is sometimes heard from a bad CV.

The bearing at the top of the strut was another thought, it had some movement in it but i packed some greese into it and it moved ok so left it be. I cannot feel any movement or hear any noise if i hold the top of the strut shocky and bounce the car tho.

Just my opinion...

but I don't see a spinning CV joint rattling - the strut top bearing is more likely.

You'll need to disconnect & check the various linkages for looseness - starting with the stabilizer bar end links - these tend to be under tension unless both wheels are at the same height, so jack both sides of the car up and allow the suspension to hange free when you're removing them, tie rods, tie rods ends and ball joints also need to be checked for looseness.

The next time you're driving and hear the rattle, lightly apply the brakes and see if the sound changes - when I got my car it had a terrible rattle from the front end on all but the smoothest of surfaces and I went over pretty much every bolt in the front suspension without finding anything loose, until I was braking on gentle slope and realized the noise stopped when the brake pedal was depressed - a previous owner or mechanic had left the anti-rattle clips off of the brake pads.

Ball joints ...

Ball joints, at least in my experience, generally don't rattle, they're more likely to knock or moan/groan whilst turning, but, they're on the list of things I provided earlier.

Thanks members for the reply's.

Yesterday I jacked the front of the vehicle clear of the ground, blocked it up and went under with a metal lever, I think I went over every part that could cause a rattle but could not find anything with any movement in it at all.

Tried the brakes but did not notice any difference in the rattle when applying slight pressure.

Over the past few years I have replaced the engine mountings, gearbox mountings, tie rod ends, brake rotars and pads, they are still looking good, as are the rubber exhaust brackets.

The pair of front KYB shocks are only a few weeks old and I was hoping this rattle was part of the faulty shock rattle; so am a little disapointed that it is still there.

I will have to order and replace the very worn left inner CV before it causes a problem, so at the same time I will order and replace the strut top plate with the bearing in it and also the rubber bump stopper as I noticed that the old one is just starting to fail.

Hi again Members, While I am

Hi again Members,

While I am replacing the left strut support mount and shock absorber boot, I am looking at replacing the complete LH front CV drive shaft on the Pajero io.

It is a 1999 QA 4 door auto , 1834cc 4G93 motor, H76W. Owned by us since Feb 2009.

I have been looking on eBay for a complete replacement CV axle shaft or just the inner CV joint but from what i can see advertised, the complete CV shaft has what i will call, 2 male shafts protruding, one from each CV joint, one end going through the wheel hub and the other end going into the diff extension.

When I look at the inner CV joint being advertised on its own it looks to have what i will call a female fitting which would fit over a spine extending out from the left of the diff, thus making ordering anything a little dificult as i am not sure which is correct.

Has anyone fitted a LH CV or complete LH CV axle shaft lately and can tell me what I need to look for, also is there an oil seal on diff end of shaft that I would need to replace at the same time.

I have looked at a couple of exploded diagrams of same on the internet but not sure enough of them.

Cheers.

This is an exploded view of the free wheel clutch assembly - it shows the seal (#32062B) and also the inner end of the left CV axle - it has internal splines.

The diagram, by the way, is from megazip.net - you may be able to enter your vehicle's frame number there to get linked to the correct parts catalog.

Thanks Fordem, That was the

Thanks Fordem,

That was the diagram I had looked at.

The LH Inner CV Joint advertised by Febest at $90 looks to be the right CV.

The full LH CV shaft advertised by sparezone for $171 odd has the spines sticking out of both ends and this was confusing as they both claim their parts fit Pajero io H76W.

I emailed sparezone later yesterday and he said they could not help me.

I will check out megazip.net.

Cheers.

Febest...

I suggest you consider Febest only as a last resort - most of the people that I know who have used their products, myself included, have not been happy - strut mounts that have play in the bearings right out of the box, ball joints that don't last ten thousand miles.

Megazip can be pricy, but, you'll be getting OEM Mitsubishi quality.

Re Febest. Thanks, I have

Re Febest.

Thanks, I have read a few of the earlier reports from yourself and other members on Febest parts some time ago.

I have bought some items from them previously, engine mounts, gearbox mount, tie rod end and may be a couple of other bits and all ok so far; but the io does not get much rough work or does it do many Kms., mainly mum,s town car as very easy to park and other drivers keep clear of the bull bar.

Having trouble finding parts otherwise, but will only use them if i have to.
