hello all, going to use this thread as a build log for my recently purchased 1.8 gdi 3 door.  All mods will be listed here along with photos if possible. i will be doing all the work myself and on a budget too. the car will be my daily drive so will need to be uk road legal and MOT compliant. but thats not to say it wont be used and abused.

Good Points:

  • Price - i payed £250 for it
  • interior - imaculate
  • exterior - not too shabby
  • millage - 47000 with FSH
  • super select 4WD

Bad Points:

  • under carrage does have a fair bit of welding needed
  • no surprise here for a gdi - coked up a bit
  • sunroof dosent work correctly

first job done empty a full can of carb cleaner in to TB then took her for a spirited drivesurprise, idles alot better now and revs a lot better too. may have gotten away with that one

What does your local law require?

You might want to pay close attention to local legislation - which is the most likely reason Mitsubishi fitted the lights they did.

Some jurisdictions require the rear lights - tail, brake & turn signals - to be visible from behind the car, at specific angles, under specific conditions - the spare tire blocks the lights in the body at some angles, which is one reason the lights in the bumper get fitted.  At least one jurisdiction has a requirement for at least one rear fog light to be fitted and has a minimum allowable spacing to the brake lights, this is a second reason the lights in the bumper get fitted.

If you are, as I believe is the case, in the United Kingdom - your plan will almost certainly reslt in your being in violation of one or both of these requirements.

you are right on all counts

you are right on all counts im in the uk, im not worried about the spare wheel blocking the lights as its coming off the back door and going inside the car.

i havnt read the vehicle lighting regs in a while but i believe fog needs to be 100mm away so if it does fall short ill stick it some were else. that will be the the last light modification as it shold be the easiest to do.

indicators were easy to relocate just needed to open some blanks, will need amber bulbs though.

stop/ tail light was done by grafting bulb holders from a delica

for the life of me i couldnt

for the life of me i couldnt get the reverse lights to work, tried the fuse, checked the bulbs even put a new switch in to the gearbox still nothing.

reverse lights are not  part of the uk mot so i got the car tested and it has passsed. i am now able to use it on the road.

i live on a busy road and have to reverse park on to my drive so i have wired up a universal reverse light on to a toggle switch. this will have to do until i can fix the lights propperly.

i have removed the spare wheel and rear seats from the car, plan is false floor in the back with spare and recovery gear under it.

i have put on some wider wheel arches.

forgot to take any photos today, ill be working on her again tomorrow so ill take some then.

reverse light

Have you tested the switch while on the gear box by checking the resistance with and without the reverse gear selected. The reason I am saying this is that you have a ball bearing that fit at the end of the switch, in the gear box, if this ball bearing is missing the switch cannot be activated by the change of gear.

I also bought those, sadly they won't do it for yours, they may not be one inch wide.
