Thanks Claude. Such a great website aswell.

I probably should have checked for the postage costs. I will call a few wreckers and see if there is anything (just moved to Perth and only have minimal tools).

Cheers

Vacuum actuator assembly

Hi Claude,

I was wondering if you have the vacuum actuator assembly which controls the free wheeling clutch?

I marked it in red below.

Thanks.

Ian.

io spare parts

Back to you tomorrow on that one. From memory, yes but not 100 % sure if the cover is not broken, where the hose is connected on the black plastic cover. What is wrong with yours ?

Vacuum actuator assembly

Hi Claude,

The unit is rusted out.

There's lots of evidence to suggest the car has been partially submerged.

actuator

Have you try to open it ? unless the outside shell is completely falling apart , give it a try, there isn't much inside it, and a clean could be enough. From memory, there are some tab on the plastic side that you can bend with a screw driver, inside is a spring and a membrane, that's about it. You will have to remove it from the car. Really worth a try and very easy to open (and close back !)

I understood that your car have been flooded when you mentioned that the ECU under the seat had mud in it.....mine got wet and a bit muddy as well ! I am sure that a few of us have been that way....check both fan on the radiator, one of mine didn't like the water too much, spinning the blades by hand will tell you if it is worn out or fine.

Vacuum actuator assembly

Hi Claude,

I have pulled it apart, the spring is rusted in two, the metal discs on both sides of the diaphram have rust eating into them.

That's in pretty rough shape...

but as long as the two sections hold vacuum properly, it will work, even with the spring broken, or completely removed.

I don't know why Mitsubishi built it the way they did, but, they used two vacuum solenoids to apply vacuum as necessary, to the two sides of the actuator - one way pulls the actuator to the engaged position, the other pulls it to the disengaged position - this will happen even if the spring is not there - if the spring is present, it pushes the actuator engaged.

The system will work with one solenoid and the spring, or two soleniods and no spring - I've been running with one solenoid for several years wth no problems.

Clean it up - apply a thin bead of silicone sealant to both sides where they pinch the diaphragm - and reassemble - make sure that both sides hold vacuum, and then re-install and check the rest of the system - spray carburettor or injector cleaner through the solenoid valves and the vacuum check valve as the rust from the actuator chambers will have contaminated them.

In a worst case scenario, if you get stuck some place and need 4WD, you can tie the actuator engaged with wire and then select 2WD/4WD from the transfer case - the green lights will flash, but, it will work to get you home.

Vacuum actuator assembly

Hi Fordem,

I was contemplating doing just that, but I was wondering if it needed the spring to help it engage the clutch.  The other thought was the spring was there to engage the clutch if you lost vacuum, like a hose breaking, as it would be the preferred dafault.

Anyhow, I will clean it up and re-installed as suggested and test it out.

Thanks.

I believe that is it's intended purpose.

I believe that is it's purpose - if you loose vacuum, the actuator will stay where it is - you could also use a spring from something like a D cell flashlight.

Maybe you could stretch what is left of the spring? If the membrane is not cracked, it will work.....give it lots of love ! Once back together, wait a couple of day before trying it, to let the sealant time to properly dry out.

I didn't have time this morning to search for mine....

Vacuum actuator assembly

The original spring is now very thin in a couple of places so I didn't bother with it.

I found a spring off a bathroom tap set, which while being thinner was longer, and it fitted the original spring grooves.

Re-assembled it.

NOTE:  Make sure the diaphram plunger shaft grooves line up with the clutch shaft grooves before you re-assemble it as you cannot turn the shafts to line them up.

Quick test while on ramps, seems to work okay.

Thanks everybody.

Thanks,

Yes I do have it. Freight included (air mail) will cost you $100/110 . Sending it by sea will save you about $30 but doesn't allow for tracking so it will be at your own risk if it doesn't arrive.(not my prefered option because of this)
