Warning

A  big warning....once you start...you can't stop :)

Not very important, but get the tyres before the exhaust, the bigger tyres chew a bit of power, and it is nicer to finish on a "positive" with power gain from the new exhaust....

Welcome to the ... happy io ... !!

Update 19/3/13 Finally got

Update 19/3/13

Finally got the funds together to do something about the tread and springs!

She now has her tyres and lift!! (Also privacy tint rear, darkest legal side windows and none on windscreen)

Tyres: 225/75/16 Good year all terrains (a lot more aggressive then this picture shows, no scrub on full lock)

Spring lift: King springs! Have part number for front springs to suit new style struts;

Front: KMFS-900SP

Rear: KMFS-90

For those of you still concerned about the whole front later strut model having higher spring pan, KING SPRINGS has gotten back to me and modifed their catalogue spring from KMFS-900 to KMFS-900SP which fit the later style strut, still give the 30mm lift (mine got more becasue of sag taken up) and leaves 45mm droop on the stock struts, 45mm droop IMO is more then safe. I will post extact measurmends gained from the springs + tyres in the other section of the forum, however from memory the front was lifted ~80mm front  and rear a bit over ~70mm.

Next on the agenda;

Extractors + exhaust set up (next month)

Bullbar + LED light bars

Roof racks

UHF

Snorkal

Hi Todd,   PM'd you but will

Hi Todd,

PM'd you but will say here too :)

King springs KMFS-900SP front $198 pair

King springs KMFS-90 rear $177 pair

$375 for springs, installed myself with SMALL spring compressors... when I take them out in July to fit new struts (old ones just worn) I will DEFINETLY be going to a shop, the fuck around with spring compressors that were too small absolutely sucked..

The tyres were $860 with wheel alignment and 4 year on and off road warranty BUT that was from a mates brother who  was an amazing young beurepairs manager who gave us a huge family discount of 40%, they were meant to be over $250 something a corner! (catelogue price anyway)

Hope this helps, I would say that with the bit over 1.1k or so sunk into the lift, it was pretty damn effective, it's just that extra nearly 3 inches that really gives it an extra edge out on the tracks. Custom bash blate being made as we speak, then exhaust, then some more extreme 4wdrin will take place soon, pics to be uploaded!.

I would love to say free but

I would love to say free but my mates a fitter and turner/works at a welding metal works place and is going to do one up for me on the weekend!  I am basically paying him $50-$100 (depending on how good he does) to replicate the one I have got except to have a flat checkered aluminin plate which will hopefully protect the steering arms. I will upload pics if it all goes ahead! Shouldn't be too long, expcept I may try and save for extractors + exhaust system first because I am really missing a throaty sounding car :(

You really need two pairs of spring compressors

These cars have a long, soft front spring, with what is literally the largest diameter coil I have ever seen (although I think the Rav4 comes close) - the large diameter allows a softer (lower spring rate) spring to be used allowing for a more comfortable ride, but it does create a situation where when you position the spring compressor as close to the ends as you can, the center section of the spring compresses and the outer ends expand - the trick is to use the first set of compressors to create clearance for a second set of compressors to be positioned.

I wish I had 2 pair of spring

I wish I had 2 pair of spring compressors and did exactly what you said :( I swear gettign the top on was easy in comparison to aligning it so it slides on to the top strut guide on the shaft itself.

I only have one pair.

I only have one pair, and I have no intention of buying another pair because I don't use them very often - I had planned to borrow another set to work on the iO, but my friend couldn't spare his own the week I planned to replace my springs, so I made do with the one set - it probably took a bit longer and might have been a bit more frustrating, but I completed the job same day, so I was OK with that.  I have no plans to take the front apart again, at least not in the near future.  I just finished replacing some of the bushes in the rear end, hopefully I'm done with the suspension for now.

This is the best price I ever heard for the BFG 225/75/16 A/T , he did give you a very, very good discount....

Can't wait for your feedback regarding what you think on your new ride....hopefully ...all good :)

Happy io

Update roof racks & Sports exhaust + more 4wd gear

Hi Forum,

Just an update I have had a 2inch custom exhaust from cat back + put in with semi sports hi flow muff and got the exhaust tucked up a bit further then stock. Looking for extractors once money issues dissapear from unrelated endevours~!

Also Mother dearest came home from work with roof racks one of her nursing girlfriends was giving away after a break up with her ex so poor guy I know have FREE roof racks!! They are "pro rack" branded and they are clip on to under the window gaurd but for free I couldn't go past them! I won't be putting anymore then  probably the max tracks maybe a light surf ski but they look great! (only put them on tonight and got pics, you will see them in daytime after camping at Bribie this weekend) I wouldn't reccomend them for others as it was a bit of a pain to fit as they are the smallest rack you would want on your roof. (The bars only had 1-2cm each side overhang)

Sorry for huge pics I am still messing around with resizing them.

Cheers

Simmo

Looking good Simmo!

Nice looking rig mate the stance is getting tough!

Ill drop you a message shortly because I'd love to hit the tracks with another iO. I feel as though I push mine too hard to keep up with my mates. (Rev limiter gets bashed every time i go out)

You definatly think the lift is worth it? im tossing up between lift or tires first..

Happy iO!

Yes...looking very goodyes can't wait for your feedback on the tyres....

Here is a link that might help you have a good size picture...every time...http://pajerio.com/forum/how-attach-images-post

Lift or tyres first ?.....tyres first...that would be my choice (doesn't mean it is good!)

Happy io.

Lift first

The primary reason to lift is to be able to fit a larger tire, so you have to lift it first - if not, the tires won't fit

Thanks guys!   Topher - Yes

Thanks guys!

Topher - Yes keen to go out on a trip! we will make a post in the trips soon :) got your msg. Also those tyres 225/75/16 Good year all terrains fit fine under the struts and gaurds with no lift, there was the SLIGHTEST scrub at full lock, but the lift fixed that. ALSO I stalked your build and say you got some lights of ebay? If you have them in can you let us know what you think?

Claude - The tyres are FANTASTIC! minimal road noise HEAPS of grip off road and in the rain and i've done nearly 10,000km and no noticeable wearing, THEY LOOK NEW STILL!!  I could not be happier! I think i might upload my reciept for the tyres just to make sure you guys get really jealous for the deal I got ;)

Fordem - I guess depends what tyres you're after? i couldn't go any bigger then 225/75/16 Good year all terrains  because of the stock front struts, that could change in future but I can't justify it atm because even with coil over's etc the gaurds will really only fit like 30" or 31" and I am happy with my 29.2"

Cheers

Simmo

Don't have the lights in yet

Dont have them yet. they should be in tuesday at the lastest. you will get to see them out on the woodford run :P maybe we should stay and go for a play in the dark?

Tires are a need for my car..sick of everyone saying "do you even go 4wding in you car? you have road tires" None of my mates say that though cause there jaw drops every time they come out with me..haha

Exhaust

Thought I would get a few pics of the new catback system installed while away at Bribie this weekend;

So thats the 2inch system from cat back with High flow semi sports muffler and high flow resignator. From Rob Bliss exhausts, although Aaron his son has taken over the business and some reviews have been less then others my past 3 cars have been done through Rob Bliss and we have never had a single hick-up! This exhaust has been tucked up higher then stock and modified accordingly.

And it sounds beautiful aswell! Will get some footage 4wdring Woodford this weekend with Topher.

Cheers

baaaaaaaaaaaaash plaaaaaaaaaaaate

So the very kind hearted Bob IO helped us install one of the bashplates from the first run of 3 he did!! Looks awsome, went 4wdring all day sunday after install and only today washed her down at work in the truck bay. My IO may have shared a little bit of a mud bath with Bob outside my car Sunday testing out the plate ;)

No other mods been down since last post, radiator top tank replaced and resealed..

Extractors w/high flow cat + snorkel are on the agenda for the coming month.

Happy and Proud IO!

extractors

I am glad to hear that you are going ahead with the extractors....you will be happy. Are you getting the wildcat or the custom made by your exhaust shop ?

I am surprise that not many people do it....I won't feel alone anymore ...lol....

extractors

i'll be doing it once I get the sub tank in the back done, extractors dictate the big exhaust and re-alignment.

..still thinking about a side-exit exhaust mad-max style ;)

oh modifcations

Claude I really don’t know!!!! I very much trust the shop I would be doing it at for a custom job; they have done extractors for my old Celica and Feroza fantastically! But Wildcat reviews have also been good, and your swb sounds great from the videos!! I am very much after a small power increase and I’ll be honest… A much louder and ‘throatier’ sound. No matter what happens though I will replace the cat with hi flow as well.. Just to make you feel less alone ;)

Bob do you have any plans for a mad max style side exhaust :P I could be persuaded to follow/be a test guinea pig IO haha but extractors after next pay!!! Everyone at work btw is mega impressed at how well the bash plates turned out btw, because a few of them were going to give it a crack if I didn’t find anything before you had them ready!!

scroll down, near the end is the side-exit exhaust. This is NOT what I was going to do, but was interesting.

I think I have enough distance on the 2 door io to have a side outlet leagally in QLD (has to be a certain number of mm behind the last opening in the cabin (window) just wanted to tuck my muffler under the floor to maximise room under the rear for the sub tank

MadMax exhaust, wouldn't this have to cross the chassis rail and get damaged while doing 4x4 ? a MadSimmo exhaust will be enough :)

If you trust him, go and talk to him and make sure he understand what you want, even show him what has been done on my car. Nothing worse that a droning exhaust. The noise "mature" after a few thousand kms. If the noise is something you like, my set up, make every one that have been following me ...impressed !

if you want to have fun with the noise there is a muffler called  "varex mufflers" and they have an electrical system that adjust the muffler opening (like from a straight pipe to muffler).  When you want to have a bit of fun....straight pipe, in town...full muffler ! that should cost around $450 plus fitting....

Oooo mad max exhaust sounds

Oooo mad max exhaust sounds enticing but already have enough po po attention from the big green P plates!! Would hate to damage it offroad good point. Still I can't wait to see how Bob does his :D

A MadSimmo exhaust it will be Claude! ;) I will make a general extractors post soon but I got quoted $460 for a redback extractor system from a local shop reccomended by colleagues and am still awaiting more quotes.

Update

Long time no forum!! Thought I'd share some pics and things that's been happening to the might IO!! Had my first stint of moving out of home (20yrs old) Now on my opens keen for more mods and good IO times!!

Basically since last time it has more front end lift (Spacer lift on top of King Springs + bigger tyres) Red Spoiler from wrecked IO, New engine mounts + transfer mounts + new fuel filter.. and lost a recovery point due to a breakdown on Bribie Island with an incomign tide, air con line hit hot new extractors (pre having a heatshield user ERROR) but will have that welded back on soon. IO running strong, broke an axle, replacement diff from Tingalpa wreckers and yeah pretty much it.

Have more money and time to spend maintaining and upgrading now so feel free to ask away if any quetions

little red

Whoa, I just checked on youtube, the "little red" looks AWESOME and technical....Did one of you tried it ? any io video on this track ??

How is the FJ cruiser going, they look great but I found that the view from inside not to be the best (to put it nicely)

Look at this video from "little red", poor Navara !!

LittleRed

The little twin locked suzuki tried it but had trouble getting up the first step!! It was WET and the little 1.3L in the Jimny Sierra struggled to push fuel to the engine on the intense angle, it was a valiant effort as after he gave in to the track a big patrol broke his panhard getting up and had to limp back home... The only cars we saw get up were a few hiluxes running 33's and 35's with reduction gears and front/rear lockers + all round bar work... If I had a locker I might give it a go BUT I'd want sliders as well as some of those ruts... literally drop  a foot or two!!

The FJ is my Fathers company lease car, and althought its got 32" all terrains, rear locker, rock sliders and front A-Trac ( basically a brake based locker) he doesn't want to try incase he gets panel damage as he has used all his "free repairs" up when it got deemed a repairable write off in the last SEQ hail storm. It lost 3 windows and required hundreds of golf ball size panel damage spots to be repaired..

I will get some IO Video this weekend when we go out again hopefully :)

lil Red

We hung around for a good hour or so just watcing people attempt and break parts... For those who think little red is tame go youtube some Big red videos :P

Same sort of track but more risk due to the sides not being mud... they are cliff edge... with no where to safely winch of trees etc....

Good fun! Great easy - medium - hard - EXTREME tracks around glasshouse.. Could spend weekends exploring all the trails.

Locker Test Day Video

Firstly sorry for the vertical video we had no option once recorded but the quality is ace!! End of the day the Hilux had to repair a CV on the track and the FJ went scuba diving!! Great day out fun had by all!!

AND

The track that broke my LSD rear last year (2nd climb in video) was conquered today with the help from the locker laugh laughlaughlaughlaugh

More video to come once the GoPro footage is uploaded to my drop box from the camera crew! This was just from the phone!

FJ

Yeah it's the same FJ that got destroyed in the hail storm a while back and became a repairable write off, but it's all dry now and the electrics are fine minus 1 air bag light... The air con showed -3 for a while haha

I want to take those spot lights off, they came with the bar and are rusted on the nut :( Does look link it's winking haha ;)

Did so many more tracks VS pre locker.. More in the way of being able to take the hard routes and not the cat tracks. Over the moon with the performance!!
