We obviously have a problem here.

I just read up on recaptcha. Quite fascinating, what they are doing with the technology. Read about it here:

Maybe we need something like this?

in all honesty though i think someone who has the time needs to become a moderator of this site.
Glen has called out for one before but no one has stepped up. He might be superman, but finding time is evidently his krypotonite.
hes done so much for us, and its time we help him out guys. Im not nominating myself, i simply dont have enough time. but anyone who thinks they might, put your hand up...so to speak.

another spam?

There is a new message on the "fuel consumption 2.0ltr" from a new member "Dallindox" I am not sure, but do you think that the link "40 miles per gallon" another link for some more nasty?  I think that we should stay away from any link for a while, or I am getting too paranoid?

As anyone heard from Glen, I haven't....

I'm here & I'm willing

This requires more than just a moderator though - all the moderator can do is ban the spammer & delete the spam, and the spammer will simply signup again as a different user, the forum administrator needs to implement some form of new user screening - captcha is one possibility, another is to simply restrict new users from posting until approved by a moderator.

The nature of my job has me at a desktop computer most days, so I would normally be available to assist - however there will be occasions on which I could be away from the desk all day

Chassing Glen/Spam

Ok, we do have some willing helper! I think that Fordem have the best solution, by having some sort of screening, or pre approved by a moderator. More than one moderator should be even better, as it should ease the job.

But only Glen can start the process.

I am trying to find Glen, I have found his full name, his email address(other than the one attached to this site), but that is it. If someone have more info, like a town, state...Melbourne VIC ?  I could narrow my research to find a telephone number and contact him. I have send him an email, no reply, but he mentioned that he was not connected (new house?)

Unless someone got more lucky than me, and got already in touch with him; If anyone can help, you can contact me outside the forum, or as you wish...

Happy io.

I wish it were that easy.

For ip blocking Glen may have to go to his ISP - and even then there are risks - at one point I was the net admin for a small law firm here, I ended up blocking entire blocks of network addresses (registered to chinese ISPs) at the firewall to reduce the attempts to hack the mail servers.

In this particular case the risk was that I would block incoming mail from potential chinese business - a risk which the senior partners were willing to live with.

Wanted...Glen!

I have been shaking a few tree, hopefully, our great Glen will fall from one of them:) soon!. Hopefully he won't be to upset about my chasing up!

If the spammer is oversea, not much we can do, but if he is in Australia then ...but that is another thing... first...we need Glen...

My guess is china

Based on the names - I would say China - most forum packages log the poster's ip, allowing them to be identified that way, but given the fact that most ISPs use dynamic addressing, blocking a single ip does nothing.

So is mine

Glen

I know what it's like raising kids - you never seem to have any time left for what you want - but - you will look back one day and it will all seem worth it - my entire world revolves around my children, I can't call them kids any more, they are all grown.

I have my own celebratory story - I just got a call from my youngest daughter to say she's been accepted into grad school - which is quite a feat as only the top 40% of her class is going to make the cut - mind you - three days ago she was telling her mother she wanted to come home (she's in Florida).

As i mentioned, I'm at this keyboard quite a bit most days, I can assist with spam, just hook me up.

Are all now Member administrators with the power to delete :) But do not fear, there all nice guys, its only Spam that need fear them!
My opinion is for freedom of speech / non censoring (to a degree) We only have nice members, so far, if we wend up with a looser or 2 that like to argue, ignore them, = argument over. anyway, I digress,

As Fordem suggested, maybe I will change the settings to require admin approval before a user can post? annoying for new members that want to post something NOW, but with 5 of us as admin they should never have to wait more than about 12 hours for access, 5 minutes been common If I can approve from my phone, we only ever really get 1 or 2 "real" members a week anyway.  See how we go. something to think about.

spam

I fully agree with the pre approval of new member, having 5 persons should make this very easy. It might not stop everything but most of it. A pre approval of posting would be good, but I like being able to see straight away my posting, base on that I assume that it could be the same for other.

Happy io...(forum io too!)

P.S I hope no one is missing the ray ban and the hand bag:) NZIO, Good feeling to delete those...I removed a few too:)

New Admins

I don't know about you guys but I had a weak password for my user account here. Just changed to something more secure.

Glen hope you don't mind - I added a few fashion words to the content blacklist.

'blocked'

What does changing the user status to blocked do? I blocked a chinese spammer last night and then saw another message get posted a minute later. Does it not do anything to users already logged in, just block them from logging in again next time?

New users & post approvals

Im not sure, I would have throught Blocked would have "blocked" them! ill look into it.

OK I have set it up so new users can sign up and post (same as it is now) BUT, the posts will remain unpublished (not show) until they have received admin approval.

I have added a new roll called "Admin Approved Members", this will take the place of "authenticated user" but require admin approval to receive.
It now looks like this

anonymous user (can only view the website and contact admin)
authenticated user (Same as Admin approved members but posts must be approved by admin before they are published and they can only contact admin. They can not view Approved members profiles! They can not upload files. )
Admin Approved Members Taken the place of authenticated user, I have just changed all currant members to this (tho many are bots im sure) Maybe I should revert all "unknown" members to auth user and upgrade them to AAM as we find there posts in the approval que ?
Member Admins Kind and Helpful site members who have volunteered there time help delete spam etc and been given some admin rights.

So we need to check Content management > Comments > Approval queue regularly to check if 1. there are new genuine users with comments we need to publish and 2. change there roll to an Admin approved member so they can post without approval.

There are still 145 pages of posts in the approval cue in need of deleting, they are from when i allowed posts from anonymous users requiring approval (WAY to much work) I leave some posts there from membes, rather than deleting douple posts i just unpublish them (had a tough time deleting a post once, it deleted everything after it, pages of posts form other members, dont know why? so i just unpublish older posts now. and perform a backup before i do any culling, (member admins can perform a backup.)

Backup

I'm happy to delete some of those 145 posts but went to do a backup first and can't find that option anywhere. Am I not looking in the right place or do I not have permissions?

spam bloggers

Yep, I've deleted a bunch of users and blog posts lately too. Last time they seemed to give up when they realised their posts were gone within hours so hopefully it will be the same this time.

Claude - I delete rather than disable these users (as you or someone else is doing) as I figure there's no likely circumstances under which they're ever going to get enabled again. Unless there's a reason you 'disable' I haven't thought of - do you want to do the same, it just keeps the user list shorter for future admin ease.

spammers

Welcome back Claude - I trust you caught some good fish while away?

The spam blog posts average about 2-3 per day - mostly late night / early morning aus/nz time. They usually create more than one user account at a time so after deleting the posts I delete the posting account and any others that have their recognisable name pattern (name ending in a random letter/number combination) or were created at exactly the same time. I also added a warning about us having zero tolerance for this behaviour on the signup page.

So far, quite manageable and I'm still hopeful they will eventually realise its a waste of time posting here... scumbags....
