Hi. I recently had to do a complete overhaul on my 1800 Pajero iO with the 4G93 motor. Replaced bearings, pistons, skimmed head and decked the block and pistons. Unfortunately in the process the cam sensor was broken. I soldered the connectors back and tested it with a multimeter. Ordered a replacement so long.
Now when I start the car, it runs nicely for about seven seconds then dies. Fitted the new sensor and the same happened. Re-soldered the old one and the car ran beautifully. Drove it four kilometres, brought it home and washed/vacuumed it. Next morning she started and died after seven seconds. Took out the old one and replaced with the new, with no change. I also got a different sensor but the same happened. Seven seconds.
Tried finding diagnosis software with no luck (Not ELM/ OBD or OBD2 or EOBD)
My amateur diagnosis says cam sensor, but does anyone have any ideas? Unplugged the crank sensor and couldn't start her, so that seems to work.
Any ideas? Don't want to get agents involved as I don't trust them.

Does the check engine light

Does the check engine light come on with the key and go back off?  Does it come back on after the engine stops?

Depending on the year of manufacture and the market the car was built for, you may be able to read CEL codes by jumpering pin1 in the diagnostic connector to ground (pin 4) and then counting the flashes of the check light.

Thanks. Just went to

Thanks. Just went to check. The engine light switches on when the ignition is on. Then when she starts, it goes off.  It seems just before it dies the light comes on again.  Then when I immediately start it, the light stays on for about a second after it's started and then turns off.  It then switches back on at seven seconds and the engine dies     The car is a 1998 model, and is in South Africa..  It's winter out here so I'll check the pins and count the flashes on the weekend.

Hope this will help someone

Error code flashed two long and three short, so E23, which is cam sensor.  I ordered a new sensor from the agents despite having tested with two different identical sensors.   The original sensor was faulty and had no numbers printed on it. I was supplied with a EWTR8A sensor that looks identical to the original and I was told it is 100% correct. Yet the car would not run. Finally got a new one from Mitsubishi and it is a EWTR8B. Fitted and suddenly she runs like a dream.   So even if it looks identical and the numbers sounds similar, check the finer details.
