SOLVED - Hi All. I have a 1998, 1.8l Petrol (4G93) iO and I need some guidance please. The issues I have is that the acceleration is sputtering and sounds like a plug is dead in normal acceleration. If accel-pedal is depressed slowly, the acceleration is smooth with no sputtering. I changed the plugs (I opted for Bosch Super with yttrium with a 1.1mm gap, the ones I took out is a NGK BKR5E II twin spark with a 1.1mm gap). The plugs that came out has a good colour around the electrode part, except #4 plug that’s electrode part is black, not white as the others. The top of the pistons (I peaked in with a good torch) has some black deposits on it. I just recently bought the vehicle as a fixer-upper and the previous owner just drove it very light footed. The plug leads seems new and the coils are in good nick as well. I suspect the electrical side of the combustion process is fine, but what can I do / check w.r.t. the fuel part? In general the air-flow and throttle body seems all clean. Most sensor plugs and small pipes seems fine and rubbery – no hard or cracked pipes. I do suspect piston 4 is the issue. Can anybody suggest actions to take or potential part to check / test / replace? Regards  Adrian

engine missing

Welcome to the forum.

What you described looks to be a faulty coil pack. My understanding is the cylinder number four is the one further away from the radiator (closer to the driver).I hope that you haven't change the gap of your new spark plug, I don't think that they are adjustable on these type.

What you can do is swap the coil pack around and drive like this for a while and see if the dirty plug is still in the number 4 cylinder; if I am right (faulty coil pack) it will, then, be the number 2 with a dirty plug. That test is very easy to do and will only cost you a bit of time....

The only thing pb I see is that the coil pack is used for 2 spark plug, not just one, but maybe it does have a fault on the outlet side (where the spark come out).

I have some working used spare coil pack, if you need one let me know or you could get a cheap one out of a Lancer engine at the wrecking yard.

Let us know how you go....

Happy io

Hi Claude IO. Thanks for your

Hi Claude IO. Thanks for your help. I solved the issue, I tried a few options but then opted for new coils as I could get new ones for $98 each with a 2 year warrantee. Now I also have some spare coils. Regards. Adrian

Solved ?

I just saw your reply, ...so, was it the coil the problem ? you wrote that you have some spare coil and I was wandering if you bought some new one and that it wasn't the problem :(

Solved - coils

Hi Claude IO. I'm pretty sure it was a coil as I moved the coils round and fitted the new one 1 at a time with a test inbetween, and the test failled. Also, the 1 coil measured double the resistance of the other and what the new ones measure. I kept the old ones for in-case. I made the decision to get new ones as I will be using the car for quite some time and belief it's best to have new electrics in where you can. Regards. Adrian
