99 Pajero IO 4 sp auto. 4G93 1.8L engine.

Been thinking of trying to change the Auto transmission fluid and I have a few questions as I don't know much about autos.

Previous owner had overfilled the auto by almost 1 litre and the fluid is a bit burnt.

Looking at the manual on the Russian website does the auto use a filter? or just a magnet. There is a breather on the top.

If it does use a filter what is the part number? and can it be sourced aftermarket.

Can the sump gasket be re-used?

Has anyone fitted an extra inline transmission filter on the inlet line? Or is that a bad idea?

Are bands usually adjusted when doing a fluid change?

I don't have an A/T fluid changer.

The manual states that you need to drain most of the fluid 3.4 L at the radiator, then drain 0.8 L via the drain plug.

(which leaves how much in the auto? 1.8 L)

Replace drain plug add 4.2 litres.

Then drain another 2.6 L (to make a total of 6.0 L drained from the radiator). THIS IS THE PART I AM CONFUSED ABOUT. 

Then add how many L to fill transmission?

The dry fill service capacity is quoted as 7.2 L.

Buy 8 L, you will have some left over - maybe as much as 1.5 L

The numbers in the manual are approximations, and, if I recall correctly, the dry fill capacity is around 12 litres - when refilling, start by measuring what you removed, and try to add at least that volume in new fluid - on the second fill, fill to the cold mark on the dipstick and then drive the car gently to warm the fluid up and top it off to the hot full mark.

The transmission fluid level needs to be checked when the engine running, transmission warm and in P or N, after cycling the shift lever through all the gear positions to ensure that all valve body passages are filled - your comment on the previous owner overfilling the transmission be a litre leads me to believe you have been checking the level with the engine off - if the engine is not running the dipstick will show the fluid over the full mark.

Yes - there is a filter - it's more of a fine mesh screen and it can be washed & refitted rather than replaced - the pan gasket's are usually reusable.  Bands are not adjusted when doing a fluid change, and I personally would not add an inline filter on the cooler circuit.

I have actually drained almost one L from the auto already at the radiator outlet RHS and it now looks OK when checked warm and engine running.

As you said the level does rise on the dipstick when the engine is not running.

The 7.2 L dry fill I quoted, is what is in the owners manual and what they quote in "lube guide" on websites. Not sure if they are counting oil cooler and lines also. 

From what you have said it looks like an external filter is more likely to be used for larger transmissions/vehicles.

What fluid do you use to clean the tranny pan, re-usable mesh screen filter and magnet etc? 

As for the breather can that be accessed/inspected after removing the centre console?

I will have a go at doing this next weekend. 

My daughter has a Honda Civic and the Honda (non-dealer) specialist emphasised that you should always use Honda ATF in Hondas. Is this the case with Mitsubishi and ATF?

I believe Mitsubishi recommends a Dexron II fluid, which is virtually impossible to find, I've been using Valvoline DEX/MERC which is a Dexron III for the last eighteen months and I have no regrets - regarding the quantity, the service manual says 7.2L, but doesn't mention if it's a dry fill, I may have gotten the 12L figure from a different manual - regarding cleaning - I haven't gotten around to dropping the pan, but the local tranny guys use gasolene for cleaning, I will probably do the same.

Looks like the Dex II is NLA and now superseded by Dex III.

Looks like I have 4 L of  Valvoline ATF DX-3 already so thats decided. Don't often use the 4WD, mainly outer urban and freeway driving, so don't need the fancy stuff.

Had my first go at doing this on the weekend

Called Mitsubishi to see if the pan gasket MD951626 and filter MR470838 were available before I started. No filters in stock and one gasket in the Sydney warehouse, pretty pricey also. This leads me to believe that people don't often remove the pan, or perhaps aftermarket parts are available???

Drained about  3.2L at the radiator RHS outlet. Opened the brass drain bolt and nothing came out. After the pan was removed it was only one third full about 0.8L as a guess.

Supported the transmission on a jack and removed the crossmember and support plate on the transmission. You need to raise the dipstick 150 mm or take it out.  With the pan removed the magnets just had a small trace of metal on them which I cleaned off.  As the magnets were pretty clean I decided not to remove and clean the filter (also considered the lack of a readily available spare if I damaged it). Just re-used the gasket. I didn't have a torque wrench and just used a 10mm nutdriver on the pan bolts.

After putting the pan back on and fitting the crossmember assy, I added transmission fluid and started the engine draining about 2.7 litres at the radiator outlet before the liquid ran clean.  So in all I ended up with around 6.7 -  7.0L of old fluid.

The only advantage of removing the pan is you get to drain out the old fluid which remains in the pan, and inspect/clean the magnets (and filter if you have to). There is a youtube video of a guy doing this on a Honda (without removing the pan). The Honda's are neat in that the drainplug has a magnet on the end.

Did anyone ever find a good site for aftermarket parts? I'm in Japan and it's expensive here. 8 usd for pan gasket 120 usd for filter.

One retailer I cannot recommend is Febest (Ebay store and website). They have sent me the wrong wheel bearings and then removed the Pajero IO in the compatibility listing for that product. The sway bar links they sell are of poor quality and I have had 2 break. No sway bar links have broken since going back to genuine OEM parts. I am currently at my wits end with them and they have now blocked my ebay store but being a cheap and easy solution to getting parts here in Aus I have reluctantly gone and got some bushes with a family members account.
