Hi,

First a big thank for a good forum. Even though i havent posted much yet (others seem to be more knowledgeable :-) i have read lots from here thats been really helpful.

Now to my problem.

Base info: Swedish sold 2001 Pinin with 2.0GDI engine, 180000kms, auto gearbox.

I disconnected the battery to do some welding (rust holes in the right hand strut tower). Previous times i disconnected battery its been idling erratically but eventually got well by adhering to the procedure (start up and let warm, start again for 10 minutes and so on..)

This time i forgot to do it, just started and drove around an evening, still with erratic idle though. Started up next day and drove around a bit, even worse idling. Took off the battery again to do the proper procedure but idle still bad afterwards. Drove around some more and now i could feel that the engine was running erratically also when on power, especially around 2000 rpm. In the end on my way back engine did not give power, had to restart and then got power back again and got home.

Engine light is flashing (also after battery disconnect), but when i grounded pin 1 on diagnose socket it gave no engine error, just ABS error code 23, rear right ABS sensor faulty.

Now engine fails to start completely. It just cranks and you can here a couple of small puffs but then nothing. Slight smell of gasoline in the exhaust so i guess its not igniting properly.

Please help if you have any idea of whats going on!

Best regards.

bad engine

We only have the MPI engines here so no idea -

i'd try leaving the battery disconnected for as long as possible and trying again.
also measure the voltage on the battery - they need a fair amount of current to run the ABS and often this starves the ECU - try pulling the ABS fuse and starting the engine again.

Hello

Well, these engines are weird to be honest, I have a 1.8 GDI Pinin myself.
I wouldn't say that these engines are bad, they are a little harder to understand and in fact are incredibly reliable if properly treated.
GDI engines have great torque in low rpm.

First of all I would recomand a diagnose tester to see if there are any error codes.
If this is not possible than I would say you should try disconnecting the battery and let it over night and after this reconnect the batt and then retry starting the engine(it should work) and domt forget to make the idle relearning procedure.

Good luck!

Try a fresh set of plugs.

If you can smell the fuel it's probably flooded and the plugs fouled.

Hi again, Had the local

Hi again,

Had the local mechanic over with a diagnose tool. It gave error code P1221. Doing some internet searching i found this:

The symptoms exactly fits mine so i will now give it a try.

Thanks for all the comments so far!

Success!

So, time for the final report. It was indeed the throttle servo that had broke. On the throttle axle there are two powerful magnets that creates a servo engine with an elektromagnet they are inserted in. These quite powerful forces are held in place by glue only. Lovely piece of underengineering. I took it apart and glued it back using jb-weld heatresistant epoxi. Put it all back today and now it runs like a clock :-)

Been out driving long

Been out driving long distance now and it goes like a clock. The gdi engine apparently has its drawbacks but in a country like mine were fuel price is high but fuel quality is premium the engine is fit for purpose. Driving pure city traffic it does not exceed a litre per 10 km. For long distance 0.8 is normal. These are good figures for this kind of car in my opinion.
