Hey guys,

I have a bad noise coming from the front driver side diff where the CV joint attaches.

We pulled the CV out, and the Spline shaft just popped out of the diff.  Is there anything that should be holding it in place?

There didn't apear to be any damage on the spline or any metal floating around.

Any help would be muchly apreciated.

Cheers

CV

There isn't much holding it in the diif. on the end of the shaft you should have a groove that is perpendicular to the spine, in this groove you should have a clips. This clips is the only thing holding it. While this clip can hold the drive shaft "more or less" it should be here. To install make sure that you gently guide it for the first half, then push it in completely to have have this clips properly in position, if the shaft come out with no resistance at all, it could mean that the drive shaft is not fully "in". Don't forget to replace the seal on the diff.

I hope this answer what you needed.

Clips on the end of the screw driver

Happy io and Merry Christmas to all.

Hi Claude,   Thank for your

Hi Claude,

Thank for your reply.  Yes my CV had that clip.  Still not sure what the noise is.  I was hoping that the CV had just slipped out of the diff but I would have thought we could see some damage to the CV spine, but we cant.  It is odd that it is working in 4wd but when the front passanger wheel is stopped and the front driver wheel gets all of the power it starts making the noice.

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to check if the diff is working correclty without having to pull it out of the car?

Cheers

Glendon

P.S. Merry Christmas to all! Hope you can all get out and hit the tracks on your holidays.

diff noise

i'd be having a good look at your diff mounts - may well find one is rooted and knocking.

i'd also crack your diff drain plug and drop a spoon full of oil out after it's been sitting overnight - might have some water or debris in there.

otherwise best way to test diff is to lift front end off the ground and manually turn the wheels and listen for noises. also with it in 2H you can rotate the front prop shaft to hear the pinion noise. put it in 4H and you should get counter rotation.

your dog clutch might be dragging or not engaging properly.

Io's don't like getting thrashed in deep mud - if you've gone swimming somewhere it would pay to get underneath with a hose and a brush and clean everything thoroughly (or have a nice river crossing to park it in to wash it clean :)

There is also a possibility...

The noise may be coming from the front freewheel disconnect - which is a separate section of the axle located immediately to the left of the differential.

diff noise

Can you describe the noise that you are getting, knocking?...continuously?...once? or more grinding noise.....in 4 wheel drive only ? under load only?....while turning ?

I think that the diff are pretty strong, and noises from a diff is usually a grinding/singing noise from worn internal bearing or a knocking noise from excess free play, both should be easy to pick up.

Hope to sort it out.

Happy io

Hey guys. Thanks for the replies.

I think I sorted it out. Last week I installed my strut spacers, when I put everything back together. I think the cv was not in place properly. I have since taken the spacer out and put some of the hub back together and there is no noise.

It was a knocking sounds of metal on metal. Tomorrow I will finish putting it all back together and take the spacer out from the other side and see how I go.

Hey guys, Can anyone

Hey guys,

Can anyone confirm that this is the correct part number for the CV joint boot?

MR336613

Also, where can I buy new bump stops and boots for my KYB front shocks?

Cheers

parts

The MR 336613 is listed as BOOT, DUST COVER in "amayama.com" not sure if it does fit your car or not (doesn't fit mine, 2002 mod, different drive shaft anyway)

This said if the noise was coming from your CV joint because the boot is cracked, the chance to keep it quiet by replacing the boot is small. By lifting the car you do change the angle of the CV joint. If the CV joint was on his way out, a lift no matter how small, may/will accelerate the wear and make noise. Adding bigger tyres at the same time will make this even worse....hard to win every where.

The bump stop and the boots for the strut can be find at most places like "supercheap".....

Happy io
