Dash indicator for 2W/4W blinking - Pajero I/O 1998

Hi

Back to my 1998 Pajero I/O, manual gear shifter.

On the dash, there is an "indication figure" for 2W/4W L/H/LL with an indicator lamp, "in the centre" of that indication figure. When 4WD and L and LL is on, I think the lamp is continously lighted, however on my car the lamp is now continously blinking when in 2W drive. It didn't use to be like that, I think. I have been driving like 1500 km in this condition, and I can't tell there is anything specifically wrong. I thought it might be an indication of low oil level in the transmission or so, but I havent seen any leakage. Anybody who can tell why this signal lamp is blinking?

Google 'Pajero flashing light

Google 'Pajero flashing light fix' or similar and you will find heaps of info.

This system has been used on all sorts of pajeros, delicas, challengers and whatever else they are called in different countries. From my research, they mostly use the same '4WD Indicator ECU', which may be your problem.

My iO has done this twice:

One time was when I got stuck in a puddle and water came into the car, shorting out this ECU (once I dried and cleaned it everything still worked - see my build thread for the full story).

Another time it was a faulty switch on the transfer case was to blame. There are a few of these, and I think the websites that you find from google tell you how to diagnose them. I was lucky that this happened while my car was still covered under a used car warranty, and the mechanic they used was able to diagnose and replace it for me. Actually, the first switch he replaced it with was also faulty - straight from mitsubishi spare parts! When I took it back he just swapped in a new one from Mitsubishi and it all worked again.

One thing to be cautious of when driving like this is that I believe you may be wearing out your front axle engagement clutch if the lights continually flash. It might be trying to engage  4wd 'on the fly', which could be doing damage.

Hope you get it sorted :)

Size is not important; it's how you use it that matters!

Are you asking about a yellow light in the center?

The 4WD indicator has five lights - two green ones that represent the rear wheels, two green ones that represent the front wheels, and a yellow one in the center for the center coupling lock.

If any of the lights are flashing, it's an indication that the 4WD indicator controller is sensing a fault of some sort - for example if you select 4H and the front freewheel does not engage, it will flash the front wheel indicators - or - if you select 2H, and the front freewheel does not disengage, it will again flash the front wheel indicators.

If the yellow indicator is flashing - it is either sensing the viscous coupling as unlocked when it should be locked, or, locked when it should be unlocked - in 2H, the coupling should be unlocked, so if it's flashing in 2H, it is sensing the coupling as locked.

Go to the resources section of the forum and download the service manual, find the transmission section, and in there you will see the locations of the switches that are used to sense the various conditions - find the one for the viscous coupling lock and disconnect it and then use a meter to check the switch with the transfer case in 4H & 4HLc - it should short to ground in 4HLc or 4LLc but not in 2H or 4H.

Please note - you may need to look at the automatic transmission section for the troubleshooting details for the transfer case, even though you have a manual transmission vehicle.

The problem may be internal to the transfer case or a defective 4WD indicator controller, but I would suspect it is most likely a defective switch or a wire in the transmission harness shorting to ground.

Hey mate im sure its your

Hey mate im sure its your front diff disengaging solanoid, if your front green lights are flashing constantly when in 2wd it probably means the front diff is not disengaging properly, mine was exactly as your saying, i had to get a brand new solanoid put in and the part was around $260 :( probably not the news your hoping for. You might be able to find a cheap second hand part. Either way a mechanic or mitsubishi specialist would be able to tell you exactly what the problem is. Good luck.

mine did this as well, it was

mine did this as well, it was one of the five switches on the transfer box, main dealer wanted to replace all five at £350.00,  ended up pulling connectors off switches one by one until i knew which one it was , and just bought that one £30.00 , switch simply unscrews although you have to be quick to fit new one  so no oil comes out.

mine is the real one that doesn't show at all

Hi, first of all I would like. To thank you guys for your contributions to this forum. Just by reading some threads I can tell that am learning new things here. I am hoping anyone to help me with my dash board led light. For the 2Wd and 4wd. I just noticed that the rear lights are not showing at all on the dash but even in 2Wd the vehicle seem to work just fine, when I engage in 4Wd the front led lights will show also even when I. Engage the 4WDlock it will show aswell except the rear one which seem to just have disapeared from the dash. Thanks in advance.

mate ive had the same thing

mate ive had the same thing and so have my old mans 'big' pajero and also a couple of friends, just make sure it is in neutral before you change it and if it still flashes put it in reverse and go back just a meter and when you go forward again it should fix it, if not then it will be one of the above complicated solutions but this has seemed to work

Mine is a switch I think

Mine had this fault when I got it. I isolated it to one of the switch inputs by unplugging the 5 wires into the transfer box until I found which one made it go away - I haven't got around to replacing the switch yet though.

Thanks everybody for

Thanks everybody for contributing comments. I have located the switches and will eventually check one by one. Whether I'll replace the eventually defective I'll conclude later. Thx again!

I forgot to mention

I should have mentioned this in my previous post but it slipped me - if the problem is the yellow lock LED flashing - there are two switches for the VCU lock - one that detects when the lever is in the lock position and the other detects when the VCU is locked.  The light flashes it the two switches don't "match" - for example if the lever switch is in the lock position and the VCU switch is unlocked, or vice versa, if the VCU switch is locked and the lever switch is in the unlock position.

Long story short - there are two switches to be checked, not one.

Check the resource section

You'll find a downloadable copy of the service manual in the resource section - in there you will find diagrams showing the part locations.

There are switches on both sides of the transfer case, and the connectors are on the right side of the transfer case.

blinking light

Hum, I got lucky!!! I removed both car from the garage, put my overall, got everything ready: tool box, jack, stand, creeper, light...open the bonnet, and straight away my eyes saw a "vacum hose" disconnected from the lower part of the inlet manifold (probably got touch during the dyno) I reconnected it and fixed!

Happy io.

Vacuum hose

Im still having trouble with mine (To blerrie lazy to get the hose. HA HA) but I must say I havent had a look at where you found your problem Claud. In the other posts as you can recall the hose came out underneath or at the front of the transfer case (Picture is also in that post...for the love of &^$#&^ I cant seem to find it) that where I found my vacuum hose perised. Must get some time to fix it. On another note, did someone find out what type of pipe is it? OD/ID? bet if I go to the spare shot asking for one they will just frustrate me.

Cheers 4 eers
