Hi Guys, I am only new on here and need some feedback please. I am thinking about doing an engine swap in my pajero io from a 1.8 to a 2.4 4g64 engine. Any thoughts and helpful hints would be nice and appreciated. Or my other option I was thinking about was maybe Turbo ???

nope

the gearbox in the io is the issue,

it has the 4G9X bolt pattern that is incompatiable with the 4G6X engines.

you could cut/shut the front of the bellhousing with a TIG but that would be pretty out there and need to strip gearbox right down to bare case.

i'd drop a RPW hot cam and bored throttle body, bigger injectors and a good big exhaust - 1/10th the price and good power.

6a12 is an option i've looked at but for the cost and the screwing around you could hot up a 4G94 several times over and have good usable power increase

various engine bell housing

various engine bell housing shapes for comparison

4G9X on left - 6a1X on right

My 4G94 io bell housing

a 6A12 engine block

Hi Bob.Are you the same Bob

Hi Bob.
Are you the same Bob that posted this?
http://www.4gtuner.com/topic/24134-4g93-vs-4g63-block-bolt-pattern/

if so, did you ever work out if the pajero io has the wide block like was suggested in that thread?

There are some links in this thread that describe what the measurements are to tell the difference between narrow and wide blocks.
http://www.pajerio.com/forum/some-links-gearbox-info

In the link below it is mentioned that there is a third type of block bolt spacing that has an asymmetric pattern.
http://6g72rwd.forumcircle.com/viewtopic.php?p=1320

It should just be a matter of working out which pattern the pajero io is and look for donor engines that are same.

Apparently the 4G69 engine has the asymmetric bolt pattern.

The link below describes the differences between the 4G63 and 4G69.

This link describes the evolution of the 4G6 family of engines.

Edit.
Here is another couple of links that may help.

if the gearbox proves too difficult to get an engine to match, there is always the option of getting the same model gearbox from a gen 2 pajero or a delica, if that has a different bolt pattern and then getting an engine to suit it.

Bob

1) yes

2) no the io is a 4G9X block - nothing to do with the narrow/wide 4G6X blocks

3) yep - doesn't work for us (unless you frankenstien the gearbox case as listed below)

4) yes - they mention it but doesn't appear the same - "asymetric" looks like an off-center wide block - not a rotated block pattern like ours
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MITSUBISHI-LANCER-TRANS-GEARBOX-AUTOMATIC-2-4...

5) agreed - there is some extra confusion to throw into the mix as the lancer evo's and other lancers have a bellhousing that can often be removed from the gearbox - thus a 4G9X lancer can engine swap in a 4G6X motor and keep the original gearbox just by swaping the bellhousing - we do not have this luxuary.

I've read all those links that over and over and over.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

the only options I've found and believe are out there are:

1) hot the crap outa a 4G94 motor and you'll probably get something really good - RPW would be the best starting point or LLT racing

2) (unproven) rebuild an early paj or express gearbox case with io internals using an io rear housing to get a 4G63 front bolt pattern, io rear trnasfer mounting. - run an Evo8 engine to keep intake/exhaust on the correct sides - blow the crap out of your driveline.

3) cut off the front 1" of the bellhousing and TIG weld the front 1" off another bellhousing to change bolt pattern - strengthen it and then find the statrter / flywheel / clutch won't fit and no one will engineer it.

4) grab a 6a12 mivec v6 from an FTO - tig on the starter mount to an io box and simply bolt it in - fabricate a sump-girdle for engine mounts. starter will "just" clear the front freewheel hub.

5) track down some antique 4G93T running gear and have a play - proton satria turbo would be the best starting point as they have the reversed blocks.

4G69 mivec block below shows it is absolutly not compaiable with an io or 4G9X block
