Hi guys, I have been having an issue with my fuel pump and I think it will soon stop working completely. I know for my iO the fuel pump is located in the gas tank.  My dealer is telling me that I have to buy a whole new fuel tank. Has anyone ever replaced the fuel pump? What fuel pump did you use as a replacement?

fuel pump

No you do not have to replace the fuel tank. The pump is in the tank but you can access it by removing the lower section of the rear seat. You will find 2 plates, open the large one (driver side) then you will see the top of the unit (fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel gauge) .

Once remove my advice is to replace the fuel filter too http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/WCF29-Cooper-In-Tank-Fuel-Filter-Mitsubishi-Pajero-iO-1-6-1-8-2-0L-MR450543-Z658-/251259457557?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a803b1015

You should be able to get a fuel pump at any spare part shop as it it used in a few other car, it look like this one    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GENUINE-DENSO-MITSUBISHI-FUEL-PUMP-LANCER-MAGNA-PAJERO-iO-TRITON-VERADA-EXPRESS-/251024890700?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a723fdb4c

Post 25 of this thread http://pajerio.com/forum/wtb-drivers-front-fender-2002 you can see the top of the fuel tank, the left side is the top of the unit (on the 2 first pictures ) it is a long range fuel tank but it is the same unit (pump, filter, gauge)

While some plugs are a bit annoying to disconnect, it is easy to do , and the unit can only go back in one single position so no mistake to put it back in.

You will have to buy a special sealant (to resist fuel) on the top seal.

The 2 ebay link are to show you what the parts look like, but I haven't bought them and while I nearly sure that they are the correct one, I am not 100% sure. This said, if you remove the unit and shop around, they shouldn't be difficult to find.

I am not sure why the dealer told you that the fuel tank need replacing, you may have other problem than the fuel pump.

I hope this help...let us know.

Happy io.
