Gear shift stuck in 4hc

Hi,

 Just purchased a Pajero IO

The yellow light was flashing on the 4wd area of the dash and i started to play with the 4WD

Was in the front yard playing around with 4wd. I put it in 4H and drove forward and then put it into 4HC,  Went to take it back to 4h but the gear shift is stuck tight and unable to move it from 4hc. Don't realy know what to do. The yellow light is still flashing and now the two front green wheel lights are on aswell. I think the rear wheel green lights are on as well but i think the bulb is blown.

Any Ideas.

Don't drive it on road

Don't drive it on road with the Centre Diff Lock engaged.

Yes the rear wheel lights should be on every time you start the car

Try going forward - reverse - forward - reverse a few times and try to move the transfer lever in between each.

The Centre diff light is probably flashing due to a defective switch on the transfer case, but the front wheel lights should be on in 4HC.

Hope this helps!

Size is not important; it's how you use it that matters!

+1 keep it off the road untill its sorted

+1 on keeping it off the road.

Try play around with the clutch/normal gears (1,2,3,4,5,R) or (P,R,N,D,) if its an auto.

Also try moving the shifter to the left & right as you pull it out of gear (or as you normally would) I wouldnt recomend yanking on it although I have done it myself after i moved my gearbox crossmember.

It can take a bit of dicking around but you should be able to get it eventually. also try pushing down on the leaver as well as moving it left, right etc etc.

Edit: not sure if everyone is the same but I have a switch fitted for engaging the center diff lock. I know 100% mine was fitted by a mechanic after a solanoid failed. You may need to go down the same road?

Best of luck!

stuck

The switch are just for the light, even if they are not working the gear stick should move. I agree with the change of gear and would definitely try to reverse for a short distance (2 to 50 metre) in a straight line, at changing low speed,  and keep trying.

Welcome to the forum too :)

Happy io

No center diff.

First - there is no center differential - it's a lockable viscous coupling.

Seconed - the center lock is purely mechanical, and lever operated, no switches or solenoids involved - there are two switches, but all those do is control the light display - there are two solenoids, but those are for the front freewheel, and have nothing to do with the center lock.

Lift the entire front of the

Lift the entire front of the vehicle off the road, that will allow the front wheels to revolve freely, if the problem is caused by drive train wind up, you'll be able to shift into 4H or 2H, alternatively, remove the front drive shaft - I have not checked to see if the shaft uses yokes at both ends or a slip joint at one end, if there's a slip joint you'll have to rig a plug to keep the oil in the transfer case,
