I took it off to see what the manifold header was like.  Had lots of other 4x4s with cracked ones hidden by the shield.  Seen a few Pinin vids where the shield in not on so what do you folks do?

You have set me thinking.enlightened  Does the heat shield itself get hot?  Does it cause a build up of heat underneath it?  Do we need all of it?wink

heat shield

Yes, I guess it does built up under, and yes the heat shield does get hot but it stop most of the heat. On any car, I think anyway !, cooler the air going in the engine, the better.

Bob wrote something on this a while ago with more info on this. I have fitted extractors on mine, and got a new heatshield build for it, it is a type of waffle aluminium, it work great...you can touch it and not getting burn.

I have put a large part of it back, just enough to go back without having to move or dismantle anything under the hood.  I usually leave them off.  On my Suzuki I had a custom exhaust and no way COULD it go back.smiley

Take Bob's advice!! I have

Take Bob's advice!!

I have redback Extractors running on my 2.0L IO and ran it with NO heatshield... first trip to bribie island the air con line melted away from its zipties, hits the extractors, lose all my gas, huge white explosion of gas... 2 fuses blow and wires melt... stuck on bribie ocean beach, dead as a rock with an incoming tide... Took my old mans FJ cruiser + turbo diseal triton to skull drag 1.3T of deadweight off the beach at high tide.. broke a tow point at the front, clean of chassis.. Will post pics here tomorrow..

Moral of the story? Get a freaking heat shield no matter what other forum posts advise!! The heat spreading wrap would be a solid investment as well!

I have - to an extent!  I modified it so that it can be removed without dismantling the air hose from the filter box.  It is about 80% there!

No, mine is a blue/ silver 5

No, mine is a blue/ silver 5 door wagon, looks like everything is standed. I have done a few things to it. Custom full length roof rack, 2 small superchargers in the intake, a modified catconverter and when I had the engine out I did clutch, welsh plugs, front and rear seals and a few new hoses and other bits that were getting old. She runs well and only using about 9ltr per 100klms. I am from Ipswich in QLD.

What do you mean by 2 small supercharger in the intake ? are they the little thing with 2 small propeller to make the air turn ? Are they any good?

I got told that some come with the extractors some don't but I cannot confirm. The set I had before fitting a new extractors looks much better than anticipated, looked like a 4 to 1 extractors. Definitely different than the one on Bob's (Helijohn) picture.

The superchargers are about

The superchargers are about 65-70mm round and may vary in length which go into the air intake near the throttle body to suck more air, probably about 25% more. I have a twin (about 100mm long) near the throttle and a single (about 65mm long) near the airbox. They feel like a mini turbo and i think they work well for what they are. I will have to get some pics of them and the extractors and put up on here then you can let me know if the are, They are 4 into 2,

Very interested to see where and how these 'superchargers go in the pictures!?

I know there are many ebay/import knock offs that run fans along the intake line but share the same power as a computer fan rendering them useless!! How much did you pay/get these devices and did you notice any improved performance>?

It is a twin blade air

It is a twin blade air supercharger, increases the amount of air into the intake and more power also helps save a little on fuel.

Mate how is your shifting going in the auto?? Can't help but notice the kickdown cable is very slack in your picture! I recently adjusted mine to the service manual spec and readjusted the throttle cable and have noticed a bit of pedal response improvement but a lot smoother shifting especially when planting it at low speeds. might be worth a check up>>>

BTW is there any motor running the fans in your super charger or do they spin generated from the air intake force?

It's not the auto cable it is

It's not the auto cable it is my cruise control and it does need to be tightned up. Yes I would recomend the supercharger fans but only the twin blade ones not the single. They are not expensive and I had this one on my 2.4 magna and worked good on there also. I have noticed an improvement in power and fuel and Also your right about the bad comments about them, they always seem to come from people who haven't tried the particular items.

They are spin generated, no extra power supply needed.

Yeh after market and this is the 4th car it's been on in about 19yrs. The superchargers you can get off ebay from china and I am looking at getting a 2nd twin blade to put near the airbox. I tried 2 of them on a mates car and it improved it even more. They are just over $12 or so.

HELIJOHN wrote:

No - that's MPI - the GDI engines have a big plastic cover that says GDI, and if the cover is missing, you'll see a large air intake plenum hiding the rear three quarters on the engine, and one of the four ignition coils.

Thanks.

I thought it looked like mine but it's just that it looked slightly different so I assumed it was what a GDI  looked like with the cover off as I knew GDIs had covers.

Incidentally when I asked a Pajero importer if they could get me an iO we had a strong disagreement as he said iOs only came in GDI.  I prefer the MPI.

HellJohn, why is your intake

HellJohn, why is your intake pipe off the airbox. Did you just take it off or has it been off for awhile ? Put it back on as you will be sucking in hot air from the engine and therefore going thru more fuel and less power. You need cool air going in not hot. People who put those pod filters on nearly always locate them in the wrong spot in the engine bay therefore sucking in hot air. And it's hard  to tell by the photo with the kickdown cable.

Roof Rack

Hi from South Africa ; Cape Town

Nice job on the supercharger. I would like to do that as well I'm just unsure where to start looking for those.

Mine is Petrol 95 unleaded (gas). Will the supercharger do the same for me with fuel economy? I'm struggling to get 8km / LT.

Baught my 99 model 5 door and same colour as yours last June 2014.

You say you did the roofrack yourself. I'm very interested to find out more about it.

I don't have any fixing points on my roof to put one on. Would like to know if yours had fixing point or did you make a plan.

Can you send some close up pick's of the mounting brackets and how it fixes to the roof. That will be awesome. Been waiting for a while for someone with more info on this.

The carbon fibre wrapping looks out of this world.

Have a nice day

Ettienne

Thanks from E van eck
