OMG - bye bye clutch

Hi Everyone

The pajero has thrown a tantrum.

Has anyone had to replace their clutch before and how much did it cost you ?

Basically what the car is doing is when I'm driving along and engage the clutch to change gears - it changes the gears with no problems (no crunching, grinding or any noises from the gearbox ) buuuut when I release the clutch the car doesn't go into gear immediately it revs as if its in neutral and doesn't go anywhere - there is a delay before it engages the gear. Also when towing or when the car is under pressure (hills etc) it slips out of its gear and revs like its in neutral then goes back into gear shortly after.

Poor poor pajero

Thanks
Liz

Let's get an accurate description of the symptom.

Not going into gear, or slipping in & out of gear does not sound like a clutch problem - on the other hand - to someone not mechanically inclined, a slipping clutch can seem like the vehicle is not in gear.

The easiest way to detect a slipping clutch would be to load it - for example climbing a hill in third gear - and either flooring the throttle whilst observing the tachometer and speedometer - the needles should move almost in synch with one another, both increasing smoothly - if the tach climbs faster than the speedo or there is an initial jump, that would suggest a slipping clutch - or - a quick dip & release of the clutch - which should result in an equally quick increase & decrease in rpm, with no corresponding movement of the speedo.

Clutch replacement is usually quite pricey - in addition to the cost of parts - clutch, pressure plate, release & pilot shaft bearings, and a rear main seal (not necessary but it's common to replace it whilst you have it apart) - the labour is usually quite high as the transmission & transfer case have to be removed.

clutch

Agree with Fordem....but if it is the clutch that is faulty and not something else, the symptom of slipping can be very very short living, I mean that it won't last much longer at all (not always true but 95% of the time). My advice is if you cannot do it yourself, keep what left of the clutch to drive it to your mechanics and not for driving to the shops, this might save you the cost of getting the car towed.

"Funny" that someone is talking about clutch as I am going to remove the gear box out of the io I recently got, today....at least have a look at what's needs to be done...

Happy io.

2 io

Yes Fordem, I have bought another one, a bit more about it there http://pajerio.com/forum/wtb-drivers-front-fender-2002, definitely in the wrong thread....

Anyway, I have the gear box out, it is relatively easy to do and straight forward. My first concern was the available space to get it out but it is all good.

six wings clutch

70 km....something was wrong somewhere....do you know what happen? faulty fitting?

What are these 6 wings clutch like ? , I have seen some similar for some "done-up" Lancer (same engine, at least here in Australia) with some lighter flywheel and was wandering if they are suited for 4x4.

You are very well look after for modifying the io in Greece....

Happy io.

Not really suited for off road use.

How suitable it is for your off road usage will really depend on your type of off road usage, but a six puck (wing) clutch will have a sharp engagement, almost like a switch.

The advantage of a multi-puck clutch is that it allows for the transmission of greater power without excessive clamping force and pedal pressure - it does it's magic by reducing the surface area of the friction medium, so that the same clamping force translates into greater pressure in terms of pounds per square inch.

Flywheel

Hi guys. I had the luck to burn the clutch while we had the pinin out 2 weeks ago. I had the clutch replaced and 50km’s later we diagnosed a faulthy flywheel. The car is in the shop again and waiting on a replacement flywheel.

The question i now got is weither it is possible to replace the dual-mass flywheel to a solid one. And if so, which one...

Anyone got any leads on this?

No offense meant...

but are you sure these things come with a dual mass flywheel?  This is the first I'm hearing about it.

The 4G93 & 4G94 (I think yours is the 4G94) were fairly common engines, so there quite a few vehicles that could be potential donors, but it's not an area I have personal experience with ...

Check the Wikipedia page on the Mitsubishi 4G9x engines for a list.

Edit...

I went searching after posting - and found quite a few hits on dual mass flywheels for both the 4G93 & 4G94, so they definitely did have them.

Im sure it does have a dual

Im sure it does have a dual mass. Doesnt it need to match both to the engine and the gearbox?

I'm going to plead ignorance at this point...

I understand the concept of dual mass flywheels and know that they can be problematic - I've heard of people replacing them with conventional one piece flywheels, but I've never heard of anyone replacing or modifying the transmission when doing it.  I'm not in a position to say it does or does not need to be considered - it is an interesting topic for me, primarily because my car is an automatic transmission and I would prefer a manual, to the point where if a "donor" came along at the right price, I would consider buying it.

I didn't know that I would need to think about dual mass flywheels until you raised it.
