Pajero IO Fuel gage/fuel tank
Ok guys I have had my IO for a few months now and I am beggining to notice more and more that the fuel gauge must be out!!
I have a 2002 IO with the 2.0L engine and the specification say its about 40L tank, now whenever my gages gets down to around 1/8 I fill her up (usually only 1/4 depending on pay week/petrol prices!!!) and today I wanted to see just how low it would get and it was nearly on empty and I filled up 33 Litres till full!!!!!!! This has been annoying me as I get really worried when Iits low but in truth I still have more then 20% of my tank left!
If anyone else has been having similair issues please feel free to express your opinions/knowledge and if anyone knows anything I could do to maybe test the gauge's accuray/improve it please let us know..
BTW get around 340-380km's out of a "full tank" according to the gage (burns about ~30-33Litres)

Test it - properly
Define "nearly empty". Is the needle above E? on E? below E?
Two of my vehicles (both Suzuki) have no low fuel lights, and have several litres in the tank when the gas gauge needle is on E, and can be driven quite some distance with the needle below E. Two more (both Mitsubishi) have low fuel lights, and if you attempt to drive with the needle on E, you won't get very far. All you really need to know is what to expect from your vehicle.
Pick a day when you have time to spare - get a jerry can, put ten litres of gas in it, and drive until you run out of gas - fill the vehicle from the can, and then drive straight to the gas station and fill the tank - that way you will know with reasonable accuracy how much your tank holds, you can then determine if there is a problem with the gauge that needs to be fixed, or if it's just your perception that needs to be adjusted.
The iO is quite unusual as far as fuel measurement goes - it has what I call a "saddle bag" tank that hangs over the drive shaft, with two lower sections, each equipped with it's own gauge sender and low fuel indicator - these are wired in series, and accessible through access plates under the rear seat. Once you have determined that there is a problem, pull teh rear seat, remove the plates and get to work.

Once the fuel light comes on you have about 11 litres left to empty, I.e. have used 41L. Filling up at 1/8 should be around 35ish litres.
my weekly commute is around 520km so I run it out to 80kms on the fuel light and fill up with around 45-48L often.
In recap, guage accurate as long as you remember fuel light turning on happens when needle gets to approximately E = approx 1/5th left

Interesting what Fordem says about the way the tanks designed, I live in a lot of hilly areas so maby the contant uphill downhill driving shows it higher and lower then it should be sparatically, just have never wanted to take that chance you know??
Will post up results on weekend, but if I do find the E comes on when theres say more then a quarter left how would I go about fixing thing? WouldI have to troubleshoot to see if its the wiring or the fuel level readers themselves?? anyway thats just assumign worst case senario. on the Empty line (no fuel light i beleive, never seen it on) even bit below only fills up to 35L max which is not what I was expect :/ HEY not complaing when getting 350km~ off 30-35 litres but that range is just atrocious for what i expected!

Sounds right, I have an
Sounds right, I have an Identical IO to yours and when the light come on its about 40l to fill. From a that 40l I get +- 360km.
One issue that I have noticed is that the needle will be on half way after +- 220km and then it plumments to the Empty in the next 140km no change in driving style.
I agree that it has a very limited range, especially if you really want to go long distance overlanding with few fuel stops inbetween. I guess a aftermarket long range tank will be almost impossible to get like most other IO acessories here in South Arica!
Where is your needle when the low fuel light comes on?
Two posters in this thread have indicated that the light comes on at 40~42 litres, which is roughly 1/4 of a 53 litre tank - my question is - where (approximately) is the needle at that time?
The reason behind this question is that there are actually two low fuel sensors, one in each tank, and one of mine is defective (the right side) and has been bypassed, my low fuel light comes on with the needle just under 1/4 tank, and I ignore it - I'm curious as to if it's worth my while to take the gauge assembly out to properly repair it.

I drove 15km (about 1.5l used) after this and filled up to the absolute max with 43l.
fuel tank
I don't think that the fuel tank is 40 litre....or I have been rip off by my local fuel supplier for years....:)
If I remember you are from Brisbane, so your io is probably an unleaded 2 litre, like mine (2 doors for me) and the light get on after about 400 km (give or take) and it takes about 44 litres to fill up. I think that your fuel gauge is not working properly.....
