Bought my 2001 io a few months back now and although I would love to do some mods the time & cash factor has held me back and now with some engine trouble it looks like it could be a little longer before I do anything at all. I will definitely share if there is any changes though. I do have many questions that I am getting answered as I slowly work my way through this awesome site, keep up the good work guys.

Well after a few major set

Well after a few major set backs I am back on the road and with a new engine my little io is running better than ever. In the meantime I added a few cosmetic mods, I tinted the window and replaced my interior lights with LEDs. I do a lot of night fishing so having more light in the car has been a bonus. I recently purchased a diff breather kit too which I will fit when I have a few hours spare over the weekend. I did a few water crosssings during the wet season last year to get to some fishing spots and I dont want to risk doing any more damage to my car after the costly rebuild I just did. I havent made any further plans for mods as I am pretty happy with the car as it is. A snorkel would be the only other thing I need so I am still on the investigation on the best way to make one myself, which I am finding right here.

Which diff?

The iO is kind of disappointing when it comes to the differential & transfer case breathers - they are all relatively low down.

The front diff has a "double" breather setup - one for the diff itself and a second on the freewheel axle disconnect - they tee together just above the freewheel actuator and eventually end up over on the right side chassis rail near the freewheel vacuum solenoids.  It's relatively easy to extend the diff breather (it's nothing more than standard 3/16" vacuum line, but, the whole diff breather/vacuum solenoid setup really needs to be raised - not only is it inaccessible where it is, it's so low that water ingestion is a potential problem.

The rear diff - I think is nothing more than a breather cap on the axle itself and the same goes for the transfer case - I'm not certain where the manual transmission breather is as I have the 4 speed automatic on which I think the dispstick tube acts as the breather.

I have some 3/8 vinyl tube that I picked up on my last trip to the US - paid $3 for a 25' coil, but the project it was purchased for won't use more than 3' - I guess I know where th eexcess will end up ;)

Thanks Fordem

thanks for the reply, I hadnt even had a look at where to fit it yet, I purchased a universal breather kit from ebay and was hoping it would be relatively simple.
