What will it cost to fix, or will it be better to sell the vihicle to some one to part out.

It is a 1.8 2002 5 door

Not having the faintest clue where you are ...

no one here is in a position to answer.

First - you'll need to get the engine pulled & stripped to get a realistic estimate - seized just says it's not turning, but doesn't say why - if the crank has been damaged (spun bearing) the machine work required is considerable, possibly making it uneconomical to repair, but that does not necessarily translate to parting the vehicle out as the next option - in some areas, used engines ae available at reasonable costs, perhaps making that an option - to go to the other extreme, you could be looking at a straight forward "hone & re-ring" job, in which case, repairing is an option.

Also a factor is the general condition of the vehicle, and the cost of a replacement - is it worth keeping, what will it cost to replace - I can tell you this - if the high pressure fuel pump on my 1.8 1998 5 door failed, replacing it would not be my first consideration, an engine swap with a 2 litre Toyota or Suzuki engine would probably be less expensive than that pump (I have the GDI engine), and also less expensive than replacing the vehicle, which is in reasonably good condition.

Hi, I am in Melbourne

Hi,

I am in Melbourne Victoria

The engine siezed due to a lack of oil, I wnet on a long road trip, didn't realise it was using so much oil. I had checked the oil about three weeks prior. drove to work and back on Saturday and it siezed infront of my garage door, I was very fortunate that it hadn't siezed far away from home.

Lesson learned.

I think it would cost a lot of money to fix now so will probably end up selling it for whatever Ican get.

An engine swap may be an option

Depending on the condition of the rest of the vehicle - apparently engines are available in Australia - Bob_oz may be able to tell you what can fit, I think I have seen discussions on using the Lancer short block with the Pajero head.

seized engine

1) WTF - did the oil can light turn on at all? never seen a 4GX motor seize, i;ve seen it spin a crank bearing due to low oil but never seize!

2) grab an equivalent motor from a lancer - one of the 1.8's from a 2000 era lancer CE/ES etc, you can put your io head on the lancer bottom end and make an io motor.

This is the cheapest option as they are arund $300 for a good 60,000kms second hand motor from a wreck - about another $300 to get the head checked when you swap it, then a simple pull it out - swap over the bits - stick it back in mission.

you'll need the io sump and oil pick up.

Well, the engine light did

Well, the engine light did not come on, but dip stick shows nno oil on it, motor, does turn over at the crank, doesnt start or run. Sounds really funny too.

engine

If the engine does turn at the crank, then you do not have a seize engine, a good news really :) Add some oil, while it is not good to drive with very little oil it doesn't always mean that the engine is dead.

You may have starter motor problem or even battery, fuse, ignition barrel....much cheaper!

When you say "doesn't start" is it like nothing at all happen when you turn the key ? or the engine is rotating with the starter motor and the engine doesn't kick in  (start)?

I have added oil and cranked

I have added oil and cranked it over, had the girlfriend turn the key, I noticed that the bottom pulleys were turning but not the one on the top at the head.

I managed to turn it the other way with a spanner and saw that the timing belt has no teeth in one spot.

The best will be for me now not to try starting it again, the timing may be out.

Its been years since I have worked on any cars, THe last one I worked on had a carburettor and you knew where the sprakrk plugas and distributor was.

Ill have to look into getting a manual to set the timing up, when fitting a new belt and pray that the valves arent bent.

Thanks for the help and support up till now, it is much appreciated.

I see Sticky has posted the manual on here, off to download it now (thanks Sticky..

Not the best outcome but at least you are moving forward a possible repair. Missing teeth on the timing belt is not good new but you never know.
