Simmo's IO
Updates!
Your IO stays in 3 happy "legs" :))) The view of an IO with locker going trough those places impresses absolutely everyone with more powerful cars...
Great job with this locker!
Cheeeeeeeers maaaate over the moon!!
Also the FJ is goneski.. Don't wanna say too much...
BUT my Father got a PAJERO!!! Even though it isn't an IO.... It's basically a 3dr IO on steroids... Give or take 500kg's, 2cyc and similar foot print as the 5dr... Introducing his 1998 NL Pajero SWB - Since pictures it has had the torsion bar wound up and 50mm spacers in the rear! It's LSD rear diff works better than mine ever did, the hand brake function is seperate to the disc brakes which makes a click or two on the hand brake very effective in disengaging the wheel in the air and forcing the other wheel to lock on!
And also a few of the 4x4 buddies at work..... IO size comparison had the guy's in stiches... Until you get to the tracks ;)
The IO is having all of the rear upper and lower control arm bushes replaced, new rear shocks, new front struts and I am still yet to find the source of my auto box leak!!
The dip stick has not dropped BUT it is gathering on the auto sump sometimes, mainly after hard 4x4 which makes me think it's still overfull and coming out the breather!! One week I'll degrease it and it will stay dry and then the next it'll be covered, but again no oil lost on the dipstick (not enough even to drip onto the ground) Engine oil stays up. Radiator coolant green and full. Auto box fluid a little over full.. I am scratching my head here.... The only thing that's keeping us happy with the mysterious oil and few knocks from worn bushes is that new locker button
Also that Bob IO champion has a possible solution to replacing front diff bushes with stronger non-OEM diff bushes!! I will hopefully organise to take the IO in for a test fit over the next week or two and get back to the forum! I know a few people are sick of that front rolling back and forward motion of the front diff come 200km+ with heavy 4x4 use!
Cheers,
Simmo
Correct
Yeah the AT's are 225/75/16 and the muddies are 205/80/16! From Nathan!
I will soon replace the bald 225/75/16 good year wrangler AT's with 205/80 'El Cheapo' AT's for highway/daily km's so I don't need to swap on the muddies for beach / light off road exploring
muddies
Why not getting muddies KM2 225/75/16 for everything ? The cost of having a spare set of tyres might not be worth doing, and will save you the pain to swap tyres....If you are happy with the Federal, you will LOVE the km2, as for sand driving with muddies, I have done the Simpson and Fraser with them....all with ease....food for thought !
Happy io
Daily
Well my IO is a daily driver and between monday to friday it does 300-400km a week on the highway and around town...
I don't want to buy new mud tryres and subject them to such conditions!! Was extrememly happy with the on and off road performance of the good year wrangler AT's but after more than 60km+ they are very tired. Especially on the outer edges from the front not having a wheel alignment after spacers for a while.
I am happy to change to the mud's for trips to Glasshouse / Land Cruiser park and camping around 4x4 tracks but don't want to run them 24/7 when they are noisey as all hell and wear badly on the road.
The only reason I brought Nathans muddies is they were cheap and he was happy to drop them to my door! Couldn't go past them.. Still astonished how much difference muddies made off road VS AT's.. especially when you drop tyre pressure!! But for a car that is probably 80% road 20% off road I'll stick with All terrains
Eventually if I graduate Uni this semester (pending RPL) I will look at buying another car and retire the IO to a weekend/project car. I'm trying to make these current AT's hold until then!
EDIT: Also nathans tyres Tribute rims were wider so couldn't go past them!
Updates - Land Cruiser Trip Prep
So in the past week in preperation for land cruiser park trip the IO has had:
- 3 new front diff bushings (poly)
- Front strut bar to chassis bushings (poly)
- Front sway bar mount bushings (poly)
- Rear lower and upper control arm bushings (poly)
- KYB replacment standard front struts + new strut spacer bolts
- RDA slotted and dimpled rotors + RDA heavy duty off road brake pads on the front
There is no clunking coming off and on power or changing gears in the auto! Drives very smooth keen to test the poly bushes this weekend
Hopefully get some footage and pictures from land cruiser will be a good trip!
Hey mate, I am currently
Hey mate,
I am currently looking for some engine mounts for my 2001 Pajero IO.
I know it was a while ago that you posted this, but hoping you or anyone else might be able to point me in the direction of where to find suitable engine mounts?
I have called around the wreckers near me and haven't been able to find anyone wrecking an IO.
Also, they don't seem to produce the original parts anymore and the superseded parts have been difficult to find.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers!
Land Cruiser Park
Had an absolute ripper weekend 4x4 at Land Cruiser park!!
Received some minimal panel damage and 1 broken sway bar link but considering the tracks we were doing were mostly red on the map I thought it came away pretty unscathed! Tested out the new $50 tent and had a ball!!
Trying to follow a twin locked Suzuki with crawler gears was a little harder than expected... I don't think the IO will get any more capable without spending lots of $$$ for bigger certified lift, crawler gears and front locker, saying that I’m finally happy where it’s at!! Cheap, effective and owes me less than $9,000.00 where it stands even with the locker! (not including regular maintenance over the past 3 years)
Land Cruiser weekend was the first time it was up against some really hard core 4x4's. Would have to classify it as a competitive touring vehicle as appose to the Suzuki that performed the same if not even a little better than majority of the heavily modified and competition level 4x4's we were knocking around with.
As always the front aluminium bash plate got a work out! No under body dings as such elsewhere.
Came back with no new noises in the car and all the poly bushes make the car feel very rigid on the road and even though they have only done 600ish km since install don't appear to be squeaking! You can hear them groan off road when flexing hard but my OEM rubbers made worse noises for the last 20thou km

Updates!! Shocks + Panhard
Updates!!
Poor quality photos (phone might be on the way out) but got Gabriel Shocks 81318 on the last super cheap sale $27 a shock!! And an adjustable panhard rod (ebay adjustable commodore panhard) for the rear diff!!
Poly bushes have stopped squeaking - I assume the sideways movement of the diff from the old panhard and shocks with worn bushes in all their eyelets may have been the cause? and flex increased!! As well as the smooth backend that doesn’t buck and jump with the king springs in it with worn out shocks and rooted panhard… Seeing if I need to move brake lines or not this weekend before attempting anything more serious. I know some people here have and some people haven’t.. Already moved the rear locker line and handbrake clears now to flex up and check brake lines.
Also the exhaust… My cousin believes it may shoot FLAMES! But more than likely soot. No smoke though.. I have been a bit heavy on the throttle with the new exhaust. The Gabriel shocks match the fancy spoiler in colour as well, a win win ;)
Updates part 2. With the
Updates part 2.
With the Gabriel shocks in with commodore adjustable panhard and king springs.
~830mm from bottom of standard 16" rims to wheel arch
~23cm between 205/80 wheel (goodride daily tyres - little smaller than other brands in that size IMO)
Locker line, handbrake and standard brake lines all fit! with decent movement in all at full flex.
I will have to tie in the springs they are JUST loose - can nearly fit a finger in between rubber but they are still tight to move.
Happy to hear of any concerns / criticisms will be intersting to see how it goes off road. Wish I'd taken measurements before but what can ya do.
Again phone pics are average~!
And this is the best comparison pic I could make! From no flex to some flex! Used to not be able to see spring now you can.
Panhard
Not sure but I would turn that panhard rod, top to bottom....like here, post 123 http://pajerio.com/forum/singlecells-ride?page=2 This will give you a rod that is a bit more horizontal Happy io
I rang suzuki bits who sold the commodore panhard rod (I know how this sounds... lol) and they said to put the adjustable end towards the lower side?? Is there any benefit/disadvantage of having it set up like this?
Or do you mean the bend in my panhard to be facing the ground like Single cells is VS mine currently facing upwards.
Also will be testing fitting a 50mm spacer over the next few days and putting the sleeves in from the old shocks into the gabriels like I was told by many but forgot to do
It makes no difference either way.
The adjustable end lower recommendation is purely for ease of adjustment - it's easier to get a wrench on the adjustment.
You can mount the rod anyway you choose, as long as it does not foul anything during it's travel - it makes no difference how you fit it - the force acts along an "imaginary line" linking the two ends, it will not act along the horizontal portion of the rod and then suddenly change direction because the rod does. This is also the reason that adjustable panhard rods are not the optimum solution to the problem of the axle shifting sideways when the vehicle is lifted, the best way to deal with it is to either modify one of the panhard mounts, or build a relocating bracket to move the mount so that the rod is returned to a horizontal position (or at least parallel to the surface on which the vehicle is parked.
An extended panhard rod will re-center the axle, however, it will also cause more sideways movement than the original rod would have as the axle moves up & down.
I "fixed" it...
Well I 'fixed' the loose spring problem.. With a cheap as $40 50mm spacer ID 120 OD 155 - 80 series land cruiser front spacer! (As seen in Fab + singlecell build)
The rear end does sit a little high for my liking.. kinda wish I went the 30mm but will see how this one goes off road and worst case another $40 to lower :)
Even with the panhard and shockies off and diff dropped down the handbrake gets tight before the brake lines I found (see pics) Still moving the brake line to be safe.
Will report more and get day pics!! At least my springs don't get a little loose now.. and the rear sits ~900mm to guard from ground. Went for a little spin now and it was firm but nice having a rear higher than the front! Before I had spacer and kings in front and the rear sat a little lower than level but now the rear has caught up and overtaken the front.
This was a pick up price! ~$70 on ebay - AMU at Sandgate
I will get pics from after but this was before on stock shocks + stock panhard and no spacer just king springs. No real flex.. I also have a few videos I haven't uploaded to youtube yet.. Just to busy enjoying being out and about!
Results pt2. Spacer - shocks - panhard
OK so the bottom sleeves from the old shocks were left in the old shocks and new sleeves were sourced from the place I got the spacers from and cut to fit.
Also have the brake lines out of their mounts and zip tried back and moved away from getting in teh way of anything but allowing for extreme case scenario of flex + stress.
The car flexs nicely now (for an IO) and should see an a video from the big Pajero club run I went on recently. Loving the new height.

Upgrade
Well I sold my little 3.75m Dinghy... And father bought a new boat! Something a little bigger...
1.3 tonne braked boat and trailer towed by 1.3 tonne little IO!
No recent mods to report. Just changing oils and keeping servicing up to date! Oh and did end up moving the rear brake lines away from their mounts for worst case scenario / stress on them at weird flex angles.
Also rust protected and sprayed over the damaged sill on the drivers side! Bit of a dodgey job but no rust and cleaner look!
Happy Days!!
Also a cheeky pic from the big Pajero Club run day!!! The SWB and IO look like matchbox cars by comparison..
And a little video from the

End of an era!
Hi Forum,
I would like to publicly thank all of you wonderful contributors for helping us build my Pajero IO into the rig it ended up being, it was a ripper 5 year journey.
Unfortunately cut short as my old boy upgraded to a NS SWB big pajero so I bought his old one (couldn't let it go).
Big shout out to Fordem, Bob IO, Claude and Keith especially for the hours of stupid questions I shot them over the years.
Anyway, the new owner of my rig is super keen to go wheeling and my new one below has already had some more lift added in the last month I've had it.
