Strut Bar Problem

Hi All,

newbie to the forum here. I have to admit i am more a pajero type ;-) but am having probs with my g/f's pinin (io?). its a swb model on a Y plate.

the problem is, it seems one of the strut bars has come detached from whatever it attaches to. its not the axel end, its the other end with the box shaped bit on it. has this come unbolted or is it likey that something has rusted away underneath? I do have the full pinin manual and can see diagrams of the strut bar attached to the axle but it does not show where the box section attaches to.

can anyone point me in the right direction?

cheers

Mike

rear strut arms

Hi - the rear strut arms bolt through the body. The sections on the body are welded to the body - my guess is that the attachment bolt has come loose and fallen out.

See pic below:

thanks Bob, i forgot to mention that it is the front strut that is flapping around. i cannot see where it is fixed to on the chassis.

Sounds like a broken strut mount

The strut is attached to the body by the strut mount (or as Mitsubishi calls it, the strut insulator) - #40025B in the illustration above.

thanks for that post. i have

thanks for that post. i have that diagram too. from what you say, that box section piece is just bolted to the body? for it to come away, does this suggest rust or something? it is hard to see on the car, does one have to remove the bumper to gain access to where that box section is secured to the body?

What are you calling a box section piece?

Are you by any chance referring to item #40003 - it's shown in the drawing as 40003L & 40003R because there are different parts for the left & right sides of the vehicle - it's bolted to the frame - either the bolts have come loose or there is rust.

???

It might be a good idea to send us a picture, that would be worth a thousand word:) I don't think that you are calling your faulty part by the right name...a loose strut would be ...not nice...

Help us help you,

Happy io.

it is indeed a loose strut

it is indeed a loose strut bar and you are correct it is not nice ;-(

i just cannot find any documentation that shows how it fits to the chassis.

What is a strut bar??

I put up a diagram and asked you to pick it out - pretty much every part of the front suspension is shown there - I got no response, not even one saying it's not there, do you have any other diagrams (yes I do).

If you can accurately tell me what part it is, I can tell you how it attaches to the chassis.

Mitsubishi calls 40001L & 40001R strut bars, they attach to 40003L & 40003R (bracket, strut bar) with rubber bushes (40004) and 40003L and 40003R are bolted to the chassis.

Give me the call out and I can probably get you a partnumber as well

The only thing preventing you from being helped is you.

strut bar

If you are unable to put a picture in the forum, I can put one of my radius rod/strut bar to confirm, if it can help you.

It would be unusual for the bolt to come off, and if you have a rusty chassis it might be good to go to the garage, panel beater (if you can drive...) and ask for a free quote...that could be safer...

Happy io.

the part number is 40003R,

the part number is 40003R, looks like a box section. this is the bit that i think secures the bar to the chassis/body?

It's bolted to the chassis

Your question was answered in post #5, and again in post #8 - the bracket (box section) bolts to the chassis, you can even see the bolts in the second diagram in post #8, part 40095.  The strut bar attaches to the bracket (box section) with rubber bushes, shown in the diagram as 40003.

The quickest way out of your dilemma would simply have been to examine the other side - the right side is loose, look at the left, it's a mirror image.

Your problem could be as simple as the bolts having come loose & fallen out, or it could more serious the bracket or the frame may have rusted out.

srut bar

This diagnostic should have been easy to do. But we are not all mechanic minded people. Nothing wrong with that, welcome to 95% of the population! this fault on your io does make it very dangerous to drive (if driveable at all). If you haven't be able to see, understand, the problem, you may not have the knowledge to do the repair yourself.  And we are not talking of repairing the stereo system.

If this repair is not done properly, and you drive on the highway, hit a  pothole, your wheel will move backward and you will end up on the roof, at the best. As I said....not nice...:(

I am too far to come and have a look and help, may be someone is closer.... So, same advice: get some free quote and get your io properly repair. If it need some new bolt it will cheap (and safe) if it is rusted, damage, it won't be cheap, but again it will be safe.

All the very best, let us know how you go...

Happy io.

Hello,I got there by having

Hello,
I got there by having same rust problem on my iO
Strut box (40004) just got out together with bolts from it's mount,

http://prntscr.com/ptwr5v

is goot to mention that this happen when I jack up iO for service

so I went to google and I found this

https://mitsubishi.epc-data.com/pajero_io/h66w/mnxc/body/front-end-panel/65868,65869,65870/

so I belive that what is needed is part 62650 or OEM MR555594

Cheers

40004 is a collection of rubber bushes.

40004 is the rubber bushes used to secure the strut bar to the bracket, along with the washer & nut - if you're looking for the bracket it will be either 40003L (left side) or 40003R (right side) and the part numbers are MR374038 (left side) or MR374039 (right side).

MR555594 is the chassis crossmember to which the brackets are bolted - replacing that however is a major structural repair which I believe will require weldling.

Is clear from image that my

Is clear from image that my main problem is MR555594 its down side barely exists as one piece, it has been reapaired before on car by reinforcing plate it's worklife end is here, and yes is major repair because it is spot welded on each side on 13 spots.

see this from body manual

http://prntscr.com/pwy9dv

I am aware how to remove spot welds, there is this tool for drilling spot welds because process hardens it and makes it very hard for regular drill bit but after ther will be holes that weakens material.

It is problem to get that part to my location and replacing it with DIY is chalange for it self because shipping is more expensive than part it self.
