Hi Forum,

So I have noticed my throttle peadel has become really cloggy? and not as smooth as it once used to be, and I don't know whether to repalce the cable or if its caused by my about to be explained understanding...

As seen in the picture below, the bottom of the throttle is attatched to loose cable that feeds from there to under the car near the gearbox, now I have noticed from pictures on this forum that this bottom throttle cable to the gearbox is only in the auto's, and my car performs a lot smoother when that cable is taught but now and again it goes limp? If anyone can tell me why this is or how to 'fix' it, i do not beleive it is vacum controlled as it is not tight when inspecting after a drive.

i have tried taking it off and spraying RP-7/WD40 down to try and get it to retract automatically but this only worked temporarily, should i pay to get both cables replaced or is there another problem that would cause this?? I am thinking it's time for a auto service anyhow..

.

The cable with the red tip seems to be the issue btw.

Any help would be much appreciated!

The bottom cable is the "kickdown" or TV (throttle valve) cable

The bottom cable (with the red tip) is the kick down or TV (throttle valve) cable, it's purpose is to tell the transmission how far open the throttle is so that it can set the shift points appropriately - down shift for over taking, up shifts later on an wide open throttle, earlier on a part open throttle.  The cable may be binding internally or the throttle valve on the transmission sticking, since you've already tried lubricating the cable, I would replace it as the next step.  There is no vacuum involved here, it's purely mechanical.

Hi Fordem,   If this be the

Hi Fordem,

If this be the case how would you recomend I approach this situation??

Should I just order a new cable (wouldn't know where to start) or start by getting an auto gearbox workshop to have a look at it internally??

I am concerned it i will cause problems if left unsort, is this the case? :(

Sorry for all the newby questions, cheers agian

Newby questions no problem

As long as you don't mind newby answers wink The iO is the first automatic transmission vehicle I have owned, I've driven lots, but never owned one, so I'm still learning about them.  I took a look at the service manual, you have to drop the transmission pan to disconnect the transmission end of the kickdown cable, so, if you're like me, taking it to a shop is probably the best thing.

hahaha

No noo your responses have been anything but newby! You seem to know what you are on about on a lot of IO related issues :P judging from the forums.. I guess I will be visiting a shop pretty soon :( or have a mechanical stig friend to check it out...

I just have a bad feeling mitsibushi will want a lot more then appropriate for the cable and doubt there is aftermarket repalcement, at least I hope its just the cable...

Automatic transmission newby then.

I've been wrenching on cars for probably 45 years or so - before I had a driver's license - my dad did most of his own maintenance, and I learned by his side.  I've learned a fair bit about my iO, in the time I've had it, because of how I acquired it - the exact words of the guy I bought it from were - it got some problems, but nothing you can't handle - some problems was putting it mildly - the damn thing was an accident waiting to happen with bolts missing in the steering and so on - it was cheap, a give away price, and I needed a vehicle so I took it, and I'd say I got my money's worth and have enjoyed owning & working on it.  The auto tranny is an AisinWarner AW4, a fairly popular transmission, also used by Suzuki on the first gen Grand Vitaras, by Jeep and also Toyota, internal parts should not be too difficult to locate, but that cable may be a Mitsubishi only item - because of the length & throttle end fitting.  Any good transmission shop should be able to tell you if they can supply it, and may be able to find something to fit.
