Love your work!
I might have to get me some of those lights too. Id rather 4 of them than 2 expensive ones?
I love the palm tree at the background, you probably don't see them anymore as they are here all the time but for me (in Canberra) it is a holiday sign !!!... Happy io
WHAT,, I love palms, oneday ill live somewhere warm and have a palm garden! My uncle has 10 acres of palm garden up near mt warning.
Id love to have a cane palm hedge fencing off my yard! In fact i have some, but it would take 100 years before they got that size here in melbourne!
My girlfriends dad works for Kumho, so im in luck there? :)
Maybe we can all be in luck there? :) Id love to try some KL71s 235/85/16 please :)
Change of plans
Im thinking of moving the lights to the rear and getting a 8100lm 22 inch led bar with spot/flood combo. But I have a fishing rod holder in the middle...so may just buy 2 spot lights amd add them if they will fit and make the floods more offset towards the sides of the car...hmmm..I also figured out a much neater way to wire it all up.
Also watch this space as I am developing a transfer case bashplate/gearbox crossmember re-enforcement upgrade. It will be a weld-on product only out of 5mm steel.
getting serious...
Getting serious here !
Just a few advices to take into consideration when you are building your bash plates. Think about the weight of the 5 mm plate....while 5 mm would be very strong, a bit thinner might be suitable, and lighter.....
For your light, couldn't you built a bracket to fit your rod older and the light on the top to each other ? or even better get 2 smaller rod holder on either side of the light ?
Happy io
Mhmm..
Yeah im doing more thinking on both. With the light im thinking maybe a
bracket to sit the light higher so the rods can sit underneath. But I have 12ft beach rods so...hmm..maybe move the rod holder to the front and sit the light on it?
5mm wouldnt weigh more rhan 5-8kg. But I could consider 3mm. Depending on how big it is. Remember most fourbys have bullbars bashplates and extra tires as added weight
It might be an idea to check local laws ...
I believe in Australia some areas require auxiliary lights to be fitted in pairs making a single light bar a "gray" area - you could also consider mounting your driving lights lower down, my personal preference is headlamp height - try driving with the ones you have now - your pictures don't show a "driver's eye view, but I think I can see them reflecting off the bonnet, which has a tendency to create "glare" problems.
Another potential issue with roof mounted driving lights is that they illuminate any dust in the area in front of the windscreen - one of the vehicles I sometimes use is my daughter's Nissan Xtrail which came with a factory option roof rack with recessed driving lights - the design prevents them from illuminating the bonnet, but as I mentioned the light reflects of the dust.
New Laws.
New laws regarding led bars have been brought out. Pretty much says if they are for onroad use theu must be wired to the high beam switch. And they must be mounted centrally. Without creating driver glare. And I dont get glare from where
My lights are mounted. It lights up raindrops really well though so dust would be noticable.
Stuck
The iO is stuck in 4H. Quite pissed off about it tbh cause its ruining my plans.
So im off to the 4wd manual gearbox specialist in coopers plains (qld) to get a idea of whats going on. He said he'd give it a crack at getting it unstuck for nothing but if not it'll have to go on a hoist which im fresh out of $$ for as rego is next week...FFFFFantastic!
Angry iO!
Trasfercase Update
Got around to playing with the transfercase & I have got it into 2H. ended up taking it apart from inside the car. Bit of dicking around and im still unable to go 4wding because as soon as i move the leaver it gets stuck again...ill have a chat to my mechanic but i believe it will be off to a specialst soon :/
Photos will come soonish
Is the rubber/plastic bush on the shift lever intact?
One of the possible causes of the transfer case shifter not working properly is a missing bush - it's made from some sort of plastic or rubber which crumbles and falls into the transfer case - I've had issues with it, as have a couple of other forum members - is yours in place?
How much sideways play does the shift lever have - anything more than 1~2mm in 2H suggests the bush is gone.
It's just a suggestion ...
You might want to try dealing with the bush before taking the car to a specialist - the details are in the thread where you mentioned it being stuck in 4H - where I come from specialists charge specialist prices, replacing the bush was, at least for me, a quick & easy fix - a couple of hours at most and that includes the time taken to make the replacement from a shock rubber.
New Rubber!
Tyres are going on this sat hopefully. Also transfer case will be fixed over the next two weeks with a modification of mine included in the transfer case.
My internal snorkle is coming together, measurements have been made just decicing on the final design. will be using intake piping from autobahn. and possibly including a actual Snorkle head inside the engine bay as i know some of them have a water "drain" design. Price should be under $60 and i may consider making kits if a few are interested. Also will be sealing the stock airbox and may even be running a pod filter in the box as there are kits for the 4g94 from the lancer :D
Happy iO!
P.S my radiator is leaking from the top..will have to get that looked at.
Wooohooo!!
Hooray for tyres :P some much needed traction coming your way, now you just need to take a trip to king springs ;)
I am keen to see how your snorkle design would work, can't even picture it in my head...
Yeah I had the top plastic tank of my radiator replaced (from leaking at the top, same as yours??) and the whole thing reconditioned for $150 if you want I could refer you to the place that did mine?
radiator
I don't know whether they have a website but :
http://www.yellowpages.com.au/qld/caboolture/rudds-radiator-service-13219431-listing.html
I had mine done from the radiator fellow there called Vernon, and it was $150 NOTE it would have been higher if you want to drop your vehicle in, I just took my radiator out of my car and dropped it in to him and then installed it back onto the paj after.
But for $150 he can replace the top tank, recondition the radiator and replace the O ring and seals. He was reccomended from some car enthusiasts at work and he did a magnificant job on mine! Your radiator will look like new!
EDIT: I know this guy is in Caboolture so I can take it with me to work and drop it off to him and pick it up and take it home again if you want to drop the radiator to my house and/or you're more then welcome to go there yourself haha!
Tyres are on!
New shoes are on but with an hours worth of messing around from kmart tyre and auto, beaurepairs, jax tyres and some other knob.
None of them would fit my tyres. Kmart told me there were 50mm too big and i laughed at them and grabbed my keys and left. beaurepairs jax and that other company refused to fit them too as they were legally "8mm too big" in rolling diameter. so after an hour i was fuming and decided to head home, missed my turn off and ended up seeing another tyre shop and as he was independant I decided why not, dropped in and told him my issue straight up. He laughed and said that as Kumhos are slightly bigger than other tyre brands in rolling diameter that same size tyre in any other brand would fit. he said he would put the tyres on the rim for me but he cant fit them to the vehicle for legal reasons. I said thats fine ill bring the rims around next friday, He then said "Just drive her in now and we'll sort you out"
35mins later I came back with my car out the front with the new tyres on!
Sorry for my little rant. But it was fustrating after driving 40 mins to brownsplains to go to kmart tyre and auto and them telling me they cant fit them and they wont fit anyways.
No scrub on standard suspension.
Happy iO!
Let me ask the question...
Depending on which state you're in, you're legally limited to a tire size no larger than 15mm or 50mm in diameter over the largest size stated on the tire placard - if you get pulled over & defected, is the tire shop who fitted the tires in any way liable (including civil litigation)?
new tyres
Give it a few track, bit of climbing, some mud....more "ioing" and you will notice that you have made one of the best "modification" on your io, and they look great too. My advice is drive carefully on the black top for a while, the handling is going to be different.
Another advice, replace your suspension, you mentioned that it is no longer the best (in your signature) This with the bigger tyres might give you some more wandering at higher speed and at changing lane fast . New strut will help if it is the case. Could make a small and cheap lift at the same time.
Welcome to the mad mud tyres world, can wait to see video of your io going through that mud section (from your early post) and read what you think of them in the close future.
Happy io
Totally illeagal
Yes, they are correct.
Standard tyres are 215/65-16
Qld allows 15mm larger diameter
215/70-16 should be fine
225/75-16 are around 25 to 30mm bigger
Some car insurance is void, you can be defected by cops
BUT
I feel personally it's worth it, once my lift is in i'll be getting an engineer to cert the mods and the supercharger.
(adding a supercharger to a 4wd in qld is easy)
tyres
To Bob... ME TOO worth every cm of track that I have been on. I have started to work towards having these tyres "legalised", this is why I fitted the speedo kit to have it adjusted. One more thing to finish :).....
Topher, if you read this....stop...and go and try these tyres...that will make you smile for a few days.....lol.
Happy io
Totally Illegal
That's the reason I asked the question ...
As a modification it may be perfectly safe, however, the powers that be, for whatever reason, have deemed it unacceptable - when you choose to break the law, are those who assisted you in any way liable - once the answer to that question is yes, then management policy will dictate that the corporate chains refuse you, the independent guy who actually mounted the tires is probably his own manager, and decided to take a chance on you.
:P
No engineering required!!
Cheap power upgrades!
No engineering required!!
Wow that kit probably adds like 150kw right!!? :P
fully sick bro

oh my god fully!
+ 1 psi
sickness bro, sickness
better go chuck some heli's maaaaaate
still no good
Nope - no good. So the old allowable 15mm increase to radius is now 25mm increase to radius, so a 225/75-16 is still illeagal (372mm from 343mm = 29mm)
Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/km Difference
215/65-16 140mm 343mm 686mm 2155mm 464 0.0%
225/75-16 169mm 372mm 744mm 2337mm 428 8.5%
235/70-16 164mm 368mm 735mm 2310mm 433 7.2%
215/80-16 172mm 375mm 750mm 2357mm 424 9.4%
The other interesting change is allowing lift kits - as prior allowable lift was a percentage of total suspension travel, now it is a flat 75mm above standard including all tyre lift. i.e. your sills can now be 75m higher than before as measured from the ground, achieved either by tyre size increase, suspension spring increase or both but NOT body lift spacers - these still need engineers certs.
supercharger
spoken about this before:
http://www.pajerio.com/forum/high-flow-exhaust#comment-10580
plans to mount in place of power steering pump and relocate pump to drivers side or run an electric one
.

I was talking to the mob that did my mod plates for changing my car to a 2 seater, when I asked him about getting a mod plate for a suspension lift he said the process was something like you had to write to the dept of transport and tell them what you planned to do, then they would respond saying yay or nah, then you could do the work and take it in for inspection and approval. Never bothered to follow up how true it all was.
Changes to my lighting setup
A central led bar will be sorted out and purchased in a few weeks (2-3)
I have one in mind. . $440 30,000LM light bar. Its a stacked bar measuring just over 30cm from my rough guess. I have viewed it in person and its crazy. My roof lights will then be pointed at almost 90 degree angle from the front of the vehicle so they face outwards. If that makes sense. Also planning my rear light and winch setup. Intake will be finished this week.

Nope, it's the drivers responsibility to ensure they are complying with road rules etc
.

My understanding is that the driver is responsible but the shop can be too...may be at different level but still....
Happy io
Did you notice I included civil litigation?
Let me suggest a scenario.
You go to a tire shop, pick out a set of tires which exceed the acceptable maximum change and they fit the tires, you then pay the bill and depart - sometime within the next 30 days the vehicle is involved in an accident and a claim is made against your insurance - during his investigation, the insurance adjuster discovers that your tires are not legally acceptable and denies the claim.
What's the possibility/probabilty of a civil suit being filed (successful or not) against the tire shop - on the basis "they should have told me it was illegal"?
In Guyana (where there are no regulations concerning vehicle modifications) - it would never happen - the lawyer would laugh you out of his office, In the US, you could/would probably find a lawyer who would accept the case and file the suit - what would an Australian lawyer do?
For the sake of thoroughness, I'll point out here that whether or not you can win the suit is not really relevant - the defendant (the tire shop) has to spend time & money paying lawyers and appearing in court, so even if you lose, he's probably still out of pocket (unless the judge awards costs).
Ill jump in
Ill jump in and say the tyre shop can be held responsible. Thats why my recepte says tyre refit, tyres supplied with rims no vehicle fitting required drop off and picked up by customer.
They have a legal responsibility just as we do.
Damaged my rh guard last nightl. Door doesnt close. Photos this avo while I repair the damage.
Rain
Rain is not playing nice. Im fixing the car on sat. I have started buying parts for the snorkel. Should be done on the weekend. Although with $25 for one part you have a right angle piece of intake piping that can face fowaeds or backwards for on/off road use. I will go into detail when I find all the parts I need. Also the dipstick seems to be in the road a bit. But ill see if I can get around it.
Exhaust rattle
I had a horrible rattle in the exhaust. After 3 days my car was booked into beenleigh mufflers (i work at yatla so its close by) He did what I asked, new cat and 2 1/4 inch exhaust tucked up to the body as tight as possible. cant really see the muffler without getting on the ground and having a good look. Welding was shit. like horrible. and it had a pin hole but im very picky and you couldnt breath as soft as the air coming out of the pinhole so it wasnt massive but i still made them fix it. ill probably pull it off over the next week to reweld it. if you want something done properly then do it yourself.
More plans, flip the spare wheel, move my lights to the back for reversing/recoveries/camping. fit a uhf. Custom draws are in mind with a dual battery system and aircompressor built in. uhm what else...hid kit on the mind but brakes need attention and im getting a full custom bashplate made up..with a..nah i wont tell you all yet :P
Happy iO!
Sometimes I wonder ...
Is it that I'm too outspoken, or is that I'm too much of a perfectionist - when it comes to lighting, it's probably more of the latter and less of the former.
I'm sorry to say it, in my opinion those lights suck - it's hard to gauge the range given the "lack of reference", but the area that is lit appears to be woefully small, even if the vehicle was parked and the lamps being used to set up camp, which is my interest in them, I need LEDs to minimize battery drain because I'll be doing this with the engine off.
For a moving vehicle, you need more spread (left~right coverage) and you need more range (fore~aft coverage), go either HID or halogen - or get a decent LED bar.
I've used a lot of different lights over the years, from cheap "no name" lights to top brands like Hella & Marchal - I have Hella Comet 500s (their low end driving light) on my GV, and I'm searching for a second set for the iO - they should be easily available in Australia, but not so easy to find on this side of the world, the German made ones are preferable to those from Taiwan.
Lighting is one area where you generally get what you pay for - the exception being LED lights - the majority of which are coming out of China and being resold by various vendors, they all look alike, and often come out of the same factory, but the quality is inconsistent - good LED lights from the top brands run into the hundreds of dollars.
