Bashplate

Bashplate has been booked in! The shop im using is flat out at the moment so ill have to wait. I put down the deposit on the 26th and my car goes in to get it done on the 2.

Bashplate is 4mm re-enforced steel plate (re-enforcement strips welded on the back) and its a two part plate, first part replaces what I had, second part starts where the stock one left off and goes to the gearbox crossmember. Even with the bashplate on i have damaged some of the more structural steel on the body of my iO. Got a rough quote for a rear tube bar coming it at $990 not sure if i will go through with it yet...maybe along with a rear quater chop... :D

Car will be going into the workshop this week to get a brake service/overhaul. pretty sure there fucked.

Happy iO!

The iO and water...

Went out 4wding today and went though a bog hole I pulled a jeep out of 10 minutes before I decided to give it ago. Tried t I miss the ruts but slipped right in, diffed out and the car stalled and wouldn't start. Got pulled out backwards and there was water everywhere. Air filter was dripping wet, water in the air box and water coming from the AFM. Pulled the air filter out and got her started, reved her a bit and were off! A bit funny down low in the Rpms though as expected after swallowing water. Checked my fluids and although they seem good ill replace them anyways I think.

Pushing the iO to the limits - happy iO

Think he said he has some

Think he said he has some plan about the snorkel. That exhaust sounds nice and peppy Topher, think I'll join the extractors club next month or so  :)

Now that you mention it...

I scrolled back, he does show pictures of an "underhood" snorkel - be interesting to know what effect that had, if it was in use it might be the reason the engine didn't hydrolock and selfdestruct, it might also need extending to make it more effective.

The problem is the air box.

The air box doesn't seal. the stock air box has to go.

I have plans for a snorkel now which includes relocating the battery.

New Springs

Time for a suspension upgrade but I dont want a 30mm lift..leaning more towards 60mm with custom springs. price at $200 more than the off the shelf king spring upgrade..just wondering the limits with and without a diff drop with the standard kyb struts..enlightenment would be apreciated.

Happy iO!

Without diff drop, maximum

Without diff drop, maximum increase in unladen length is 45mm, maybe 50 if you're lucky - the results have varied between iO's I think. Changing springs alone will have no affect on this.

KYB struts can only handle about 35mm spring height increase with 'safe' amount of droop left.

With King Springs +30mm springs plus a 30mm strut spacer then you should be able to get your 60mm lift at rest without needing to drop the diff.
Another option is to use Koni Strut inserts with an internal spacer. I wanted to do this, but they were nearly double the price of KYB's and require a fair amount of work to install.

As for the rear, some custom springs could be made and you could add a shock eyelet spacer to the bottom, or get the pedders shocks for the hilux that Singlecell had used.

I may be wrong, its been a long day and this is off the top of my head, but I hope it helps!

max spring length

OK,

the rear can be raised as much as you like as long as you are happy to fit adjustable panhard rods and radius rods to re-align rear axle. Custom shocks will need to be sourced to allow correct droop and compression which will be hard as fully compressed is actually quite short, also a light shock is needed as our io's are light.

The front can only realisticaly be lifted a maximum of 50mm , this is right on the limits of the stock strut travel so you are well advised to add a 50mm strut-shaft spacer like NZIO and drop the diff by 50mm at the same time so the net effect on the strut is 0.
I would agree with natster on 30mm tops in reality.

problems you will face are these:

1) illeagal - unlikely to pass engineers given lift restrictions in place in QLD
2) droop - the standard struts have limited travel - this is fine for normal configuration but gets restrictive with big lifts
3) bump-stop, you will need to add Xmm of bump stop for every Xmm you extend the strut shaft to prevent breakage.

The simple practice of buying "lift-kit" springs is a crock, all you are buying is a coil spring from thicker gauge wire and with more turns. Great for the carpark, rock parks and 4wd ramps - no good for offroad driving. Kings / Dobinsons etc only sell you a stiffer spring that compresses less easily and as a result makes your truck sit higher when stationary but reduces it's drivability and roadholding.

IF you want to lift your truck but retain any sort of high-speed drivability you are going to want your wheel to mould over the terrain to a larger amount, you would need a softer spring to allow the wheel to travel up and down further in the same time without launching the body up and down, this means longer but softer springs, potentially the same gauge wire and more turns OR a wider spring set point.
The french make brilliant cars for dirt and rough terrain travel and all have very long, very soft coils. Rallying early Peugoet 504's showed how soft springs and good shocks make all the difference.

If you want a mega lift stop reading now - contact Glen and buy a set of his coilovers - will let you run a super long spring with bucket-loads more travel than a stock strut.

Personnaly I am lifting the front of mine with 1.6L old style coils, nice and soft and longer than my 2.0L late model coils.
Rear I'll be lifting with some re-set 4cyl astina springs, reseting them to be variable i.e. half the spring is a tight close winding (stiff) and half is a wide winding (soft) idea being the soft part of the coil will asorb the terrain and the stiff part will aid with lift - not perfect but close enough.

I used the astina springs

I used the astina springs as-is in the rear and 1.6l early model springs on new struts in the front with a 20mm Delrin spacer on top to get 40mm. Handles well on road, I'm yet to really push it off road with this set up.

suspension work

I am only guessing that "kingspring" will make the custom spring for the rear. I have some advice and some concern with your idea.

The concern is 3 inch at the rear....fine....but the front kingspring will only give you 1 inch, not much more. The rear of the car will then be around 2 inch higher than the front. For me it is not advisable, heavy braking and handling will change, and not for the best. Could end up be very dangerous.

You could make some spacer on the top of the strut (that could had 1.5 inch or so).  I would replace the front strut at the same time (the more you lift a car, the better the suspension need to be). I think that you will need to adjust the panhard rod too at this level.

Happy io

Custom rear Bar

Going to the sheet metal shop tomorrow after work to get the brackets for my rear bar made up, Im just using the towbar mounting brackets, but getting them extended 100mm in length and hopefully get them made in either 6mm or 8mm mild steel.

Photos with more detail will come during the week. also looks like ill be doing a rear quater chop... :D

happy iO!

No Power!

Currently my iO has a free reving engine (car revs as per normal) with slower than grandma speed acceleration.

Also my exhaust rattle has come back..drives me crazy. Had a look under neath the car to see the rattle and I'v dented my new Cat. So I bet I'v loosened a baffle, and its cut off my exhaust flow and causing the car to accelerate like a prius on diesel.

Also got my little bro to rev the car at 3000rpm for 10 seconds and I had next to no difference in exhaust pressure from idle.

I'll play around with it this avo. hopefully should be fixed by tomorrow

Happy iO!

In your dreams

All fixed just got to weld it back up.

Also note the iOs are insanely loud without muffler. I use to think my old au falcon with a cut exhaust was loud...wow!

Also ask simmo for his motor and box cause his car died at briby and had to be towed off!

Simmo's IO

Simmo's IO is not dead yet :P

Extractors burnt through the air con line and released the gas (which is 10x then a blown head gasket :D )

and then the wires got melted under it and the car shut it self off!! BUT NEVER THE LESS!!

We have salvaged the wires and replaced the engines computer fuse and BOOM she fires again and is running prime!! I did however snap off a recovery point (from a desperate attempt to be skull dragged off the beach before high tide came) and that damaged my front bumper BUT cosmetics smosmetics ehhh the main thing I am happy about is she is back to running perfecto :D

P.s. will be invetsing in heat shield ASAP! strange this only happened like on the 6th beach run since having the extractors on! DAMN SPRING!

heat shield

The heat shield they fitted on my extractors is great, I can touch it while the engine is hot. See my built thread post 70, I think that it is similar to this one on ebay, not the cheapest but it work well  http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/VULCAN-PROFESSIONAL-EMBOSSED-HEAT-SHIELD-300MM-X-300MM-/230691569438?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35b649ff1e

Lol, I can only imagine the car stuck on the beach with the tide coming in and the car not starting, did you get ... stressed:)

heat shield is vital! even for normal operation as your engine bay electrics are not fond of high temps

Can you please post photos of the damage? I would hate to see that happen to anyone whilst being snached out..

Might look at custom recovery points for the front now :o Your scaring me!

Glad to hear its up and running!

P.S The iO runs 1000000x better with a hollowed cat..just sayin!

Now to elaborate...

So..those plates are the start of my custom rear tube bar.. I was going to encorperate a hayman reece towbar but it would be too hard to get it legalised..so no point really. The high tensile bolts for the passenger side are worn out and wont actually bite the thread..so ill need to get new ones..and for the drivers side they are a different thickness so I need to drill out the holes... The plates are 6mm thick (same as standard towbar mounts) and I will be getting 48.5mm x 3mm OD steam pipe for the rest of the bar. ($16 per meter)  Reason for steam pipe is its actually stronger than tube steel.

Also note if you look at picture 3, roughly around the middle of the plate sticking out will be a hole for a  D shackle to fit through, for recoveries. If that makes any sence..

Happy iO!

The day has finally come...

Its sad to say my iO has finally died..by the sounds of it its a main bearing somewhere....ill figure it out this week but im done with the iO. Too hard for parts etc etc.

I would like to sell the iO as is for a reasonable price (around $1500) Havent figured everything out yet. but If I cant find a buyer soon enough to take the car then I will probably look at wrecking it. I will have some KL71's for sale soon too.

Time to start parting my iO out!

Okay now a few people have already put in for some parts, so the following is already "reserved" for some other owners

Roof racks, Rear spoiler roof basket, ecu, door seals, ac compressor, handbrake housing and 4x4 shifter.

Please comment on what you would like so other people know its already "reserved" and inbox me for details.

I have 9 KL71's with rims.  5 standard iO rims with the 225/75/R16 KL71s fitted 4 with 80-90% tread and the other with 100% (spare)
The other 4 are not on rims yet but they have 100% tread!

Gearbox is good, the car needs a new long motor (block, pistons & head) everything else is okay. Dent in front right hand door and quater panel dent in rear bumper, dent in front left quater. rest is okay, lights are allgood. Towbar etc etc

I also have custom cut plates to suit a custom rear bar if anyone is interested in those let me know :)

I brought my new car, 2005 Ford Falcon xr6 ute. sadly not a 4wd but its what i wanted :)

Happy iO!

I had to make a rapid sale on the iO and sold everything bar tyres and rims. I know alot of you guys wanted parts but I just didnt have the time and I have a car loan in my hands.

For those who wanted parts im very sorry but I had no option. And for those who wanted tyres ill get onto it asap.
