Transmission mount - is it worn?

Having had quite a significant wobble caused by a worn left rod end, which has now been repaired, my Pajero is (almost) driving like a dream again.

I noticed a but of a 'knock'/jolt when starting the engine, and even more when turning it off and wondered if it was the engine or transmission mounts. Being an amateur I can only see 2 engine mounts to the left and right of the engine - both which seem pretty solid.

Looking at the transmission however I can quite easily give it a good wobble with a little effort. The transmission mount stoppers (the rubbery quarter circles) I can move quite freely.

How much 'play' should I expect on this mounting?

mounts

I actually get the same noise turning the car on although I don't get it when turning it off like you mentioned. Is yours a manual or an automatic? Because I noticed a bit of a knocking/jolt sound when changing gears too.

My transmission also had a fair bit off play like yours, and I actually changed the gearbox mounts on the weekend, it took out a bit off play but there still is some play there. It reduced the knocking while changing gears a alot. And seemed to help with the starting noise too, but I still get it sometimes but I think that's cause mines a bit rough to start atm (im guessing I need new engine mounts too)

Not the cheapest of mounts either.

gearbox mount

To reply to the first post, yes there is some free play, as long as they are not cracked you should be fine. You can visually see if the gearbox mount are cracked but it can be a hard to see for the engine. May be you can put a jack (with a flat piece of timber) under the sump and try to lift it, if the mount are cracked you should be able to see it.
