Turbo on a 1.6?

Hi all! I've had my 1.6 litre 1999 io for 7 months now. In that time I've had the windows tinted, added rubbing strips that I imported from the USA, driving lights & front nudge bar, Blaupunkt cd player, dash trim kit, floor mats & sheepskin seat covers, rear muffler & other bits.Next year I'm looking at changing the wheels & tyres, but I am also interested in what else I can do to the engine to make it perform better.

I don't care about engine life as I do a small mileage per year & I also have an SW20 Toyota MR2 to share driving duties with. So I'm thinking of a low psi turbo...My car has done 177,000km, so I know the engine won't last forever with a snail on it. But if it goes for 30,000km, that's 6 years driving at my rate & what fun it could be!

My only considerations are driveability & cost. First, it has to be tractable in traffic, so ideas on how much boost & what turbo's to use would be great. I'd like to spend a maximum of AU$3000 to do the job. I don't want a street animal, just something that has grunt on the street & can do 0-100km/h in 10 seconds or less.

I'm in Melbourne if anyone has anyone they recommend. The job is not a priority; I'm looking at doing this at the end of next year.

you should be able to find a

you should be able to find a turbo fairly easily for the iO coz they run the same 4G93 or 4G94 engine as the lancer of the same year. so finding a turbo shouldnt be too hard, and you should be able to get one for around your budget also. only problem i dont know where to look coz i havent started looking for one yet... or where to get one for a lancer... just goolge 'turbo for mitsubishi langer 4G93' or '4G94'

If you fit the turbo on, what

If you fit the turbo on, what else do you have to change? Will you have to take something out to make space? Do you have to add a intercooler? I had a look an intercooler wont fit as there is no space to fit one. Have you guys heard about someone doing it before. Im also seariously looking at it. Any advice is better than non

Thanks for the input guys,

Thanks for the input guys, especially Korruptions link.

Regarding the question of intercooler, that's a good point. Is one really needed though? As it's dark while I type this, I haven't yet had a look where one might be able to go if needed. Or maybe a top mount could be the go with a bulged bonnet (yes, more money alas!) & a scoop cut into it?

Just spent the last 20min

Just spent the last 20min replying and it crashed! :(

Turbo is a GREAT idea:) and one im going to do too. Your 1.6 is a 4G18 tho, not the 4G93/94 the 4 doors and ZRs came with. But google 4G18 Turbo and you will find plenty of stuff. I have done a few turbo conversions over the years. one 1.6 and two 2.6 builds. $3000 should be no probs.Theres plenty of suitable turbos in the $500 range, $500 for turbo manifold and intake plumping, $100 for an ebay intercooler. chuck on a piggy back computer and get a dyno tune. You may need larger injectors and fuel pump too. OR  go for a full aftermarket ECU, swap that MAF for a MAP youll be a little rocket. I just picked up a wolf ECU with loom to suit my engine for the race car for $250, If you keep your eyes open you can do it for a reasonable price.

It should hold 10psi OK. do you know what the CR is standard? where are you in melb? Im in Ringwood east, happy to help if you decide to do it.

Im not sure how much room is behind the stock bumpers? But theres plenty of room for an intercooler behind my TJM bar, Not sure what Ill do when i install a winch tho. Ill make room somewhere, might even have to do that bonnet scoop thing, dont want to tho. an intercooler is not needed, but it helps, could make the diferance between 6psi and 10psi, or a good 20hp+ in a 1.6.

Turbo

Hi

Fitting a turbo should not be a problem. Reliability wise not the best idea, but if you maintain your car well and do a proper job it should be ok if you run low boost.

There is plenty of space to fit a stock exhaust manifold and a smallish turbo.

Yes you NEED a intercooler. For efficiency and reliability. As you increase the pressure the temperature will increase

PV = mRT , volume is increases, mass of the air increases, R constant and pressure increasing results in temp going through the roof. If you fit a small intercooler off a smallish diesel motor infront of your radiator with the minimal cutting to your current bumper it should be ok.

I'm also planning on doing a turbo conversion as my IO is a weekend toy. TD03 Mitsubishi turbo, std lancer exhaust manifold, racetech wastegate, 57mm free flow (with 3 boxes), 1.6TDi VW polo intercooler and a unichip to control it all. According to my mechanic I should get away with 0.4bar boost without adding an injector or changing any internals.

Keep us updated, mine will only happen after the bumper, drawer system, rock sliders and roof rack.

Thanks for the offer Glen,

Thanks for the offer Glen, I'll keep you posted :) I thought the engine in the 1600 is a 4G92 Lancer engine?

You might be right. I am not

You might be right. I am not familiar with the 1.6 range of engines in the pajeri io, lancers or colts. Pajero ios have been turbod befor too this guy has a td04 on his

they also made some GDI 1.8 turbo iOs they have more power than the lanser GSRs!

GDI

maybe look at the cost of the jap pajero io 1.8L turbo GDI motor from a half-cut. Comes with an intercooler and all mounts/brackets designed for an Io engine bay. At least it would be stock designed for turbo and puts out loads more power/torque than the 2.0L 4G94.

Hey Pat,

What sort of spares are you chasing? I recently did a rebuild on my 1.6L and the best place by far for spares is Malaysia.
