I've owned my Io for about 3 years now and love it!

During that time I've lived in Adelaide, Hobart, Brisbane and done many large interstate trips on and off road.

Aside from an ARB rear air locker and some headlight guards It's not needed any major modifications.

(as new, purchased in Nowra NSW as an impulse buy during a holiday)

I picked the Io as I was after a small compact 2 door 4wd that had to have a good sized engine, a propper 4wd system with center diff lock and hi-lo range. Previously I had been driving a Lada Niva with a 2L Lancia engine fitted that while it had more power than the 2L Io, was not street leagal and lost a lot of oil when driven.

I had a good look at X-trails, Vitara's, Feroza's, Jimneys (yuk!) but none offered a good constant + lock option with low range. The vitara came close but manual hubs were a turn off.

All the reviews of the Io were disparaging, most focused on the 1.6 and 1.8l modls labeling it as too old, clunky and behind the times. It was not until I read one about the new 2L that said "perfect for the farmer who still needs to pull out stumps and drive through the creek to get to the bottom paddock" that I decided it would be worth a look.

I was in Nowra on a holiday and saw this for sale at a dealer, so after a late-afternoon test drive I purchased it.

The SWB is barely over 3m in length, somthing I'd not thought about fully when I bought it. Space in the back is tight but for two people is still sufficient for a fair sized trip. The rear cargo takes a postal crate/eski easily behind the seats and the ear door is much sturdier than that of the xtrail and feroza.
The turning circle is great even in 4wd and continues to amaze me with where you can make it go!

My wife and I traveled around in Tasmania a fair bit and even got to play in the snow! This was taken ontop of Mt Tim Shea in the middle of winter. The track to the sumit is very steep and rocky, difficult in the dry but the io made it up no worries in the snow with a firm application of right foot and lockers. The rear locker combined with the flexability of the rear suspension makes it almost unstoppable!

The Io's also proved itself very capable in urban 4wd'ing places you probably shouldn't get caught in too ;)

Since I've moved to Brisbane I've sustained my first damage, pushed the front skid pan inside out and dented in the fuel tank protectors. Nothing permanent but points to some 4mm steel plate being required underneath.

Future plan is to drop the front diff by 25-30mm then extend the front struts with koni inserts by the same amount. Fit 225/75-16 tyres and possibly put a lift kit in the rear only just to level out the front. I'm lokin to retain standard springs to keep the ride pleasant. Will need to install high-level breathers and am currently woking on an under-bonnet snorkel.

Will see how i go and keep you posted.

Bob

Thanks! White was my first choice but never found one in good condition. Hope it all goes through ok for you!

Yeah, I have upgraded the tyes, when I bought it the tyres were some weird old Michelins that had a tread pattern that looked like the old "Bob Jane all rounders". They took some punishment and still hung in there with rocks and gravel so when we moved to Tas and wanted somthing more aggresive but good in the wet I bought some Michelin "Latitude Cross" 215/70-16's.

I cannot recomend them enough! they are silent on the highway yet have a good block tread for mud and rocks, fantastic grip on cold wet bitumen and the "70" profile corrects the eror in the spedo perfectly. Unfortunatly they are expensive but you definitly get what you pay for. So far they have done about 15,000kms and have used 1/4 to 1/3 of the tread which isn't bad considering I hammer my Io to and from work on the twisty bitumen roads down the mountain and along the motorway.

When these ones wear out i'm looking at the larger Kumho KL71. I've read some excelent reviews on how quiet they are for a mud terain, asymetric tread design makes the Latitude's realy quiet so i'm a definite fan especially since I drive 60kms each way to work. Lots of complaints from people as to them failing from overheating however from what I can see it's all from 3t+ cruisers and patrols, here's hoping that the 1.5t of the io reduces the failure and wear rates especially if they are a little bit too big for what would be standard, just need to get some 7" rims to run them.

yeah the kumho kl71 are the

yeah the kumho kl71 are the exact tyres im looking at outting on mine when i get it. together with the kyb/dobisnon suspension lift. i think the biggest or most comfortable size to go for is 29. i love the look of them too, they look so aggressive. been tryin to find some for cheap in oz but cant find any. my local bob jane sells them and displays them out the front. i just have to stare every time i see them... havent gone in for a quote yet. was thinkin of buyin some for my outlander til i get the iO then i will already have the tyres. the outlander has the same setup as the iO, even the same groundclearance. ist like theyve put the outlander body on the iO chassis. ive been thinking about this lately coz the outlander first came out in 2003 and the last iO in oz was 2002. to me it looks like theyve scrapped the iO for oz and brought out a soft roader...

suspension stuff even show the exact same suspension lift for the outlander as the iO... its gotta get ya thinking, is the outlander a later model of the iO without its super select 4wd???

although soft roader is pretty, well soft explanation for this car. it performs exceptionally, and can handle a fair beating. maybe ill put some photos of after my little creswick exploration today...

outlander

yeah the KL71's look mean-as and hopefully will be quiet unlike the BFG's MT's etc. My Lada ran the MTZ and even for an 80% road tyre they were noisy!

The outlander is what the short-lived japanese "pajero io sport" became, not too many components are the same but the Mcph front end is similar. Year model is realy an indication of Mitsubishi replacing the io with somthing more "subaru-ish" than improving it.
On a side note it looks like the 2009 VR lancer mags at 16x6.5" with a +45 offset will let you run the Kumho's on stock front struts but will be very close, just need to enlarge the hub mount to 105mm from the 65mm of the lancer and possibly add a 3mm spacer plate, really need to find out the actual width of the KL7 when inflated on a 6.5" rim. Mickey Thompson have this info but I doubt Kumho would.

I was thinking about the Outlander front hubs, you can get a 4 pot brake package for them and might be easier to graft on outlander hubs than mod io ones.. just a thought..

It's called the Roadventure

It's called the Roadventure MT 834

It was replaced by the KL71. A lot of JK Jeep owners are going with the KL71 at the moment. One thing I noticed was that they seem to break chunks off on the corners, but the guys seems really happy with it. Apparently its the most quite MT on the market. I am currently waiting on a quote for a set of 225/75R16 to fit to the Hulk

I LOVE that tunnel pic! whre

I LOVE that tunnel pic! we need to get into some more Urban 4x4 :)  where was that one?
One of the dudes on the Hang gliding camp over the weekend had the tyres your running now, they look pretty good, should be awesome on sliprey rocks, sand , snow etc?

As for the Kumho kl71s What size was that $1020?

A mate that runs some told me where he got his at a good price, So i called them, and Kmart, Kmart said they will beat any price by 10% so that makes them an awesopme price, plus free rotations for the life of the tyre anywhere in aus.

Moriset tyres
31 x 10.5x 15 $188
245/75R16      $240

Kmart 245/75R16 - $265ea

so with the 10% off
31 x 10.5x 15 $188   = $171
245/75R16      $240  =  $218

$872 fitted and balanced Is a pretty good price. Will fit them hopfully next week, let you know how they go, and sound.

225/75R16 kumho KL71s at $255 each fitted and balanced = $1020 without a spare

so it works out to be $229.50 each = $918 for a set of 4 at kmart with 10% off

That tunnel is under a massive shopping complex in brisbane, about 3kms of tunnels to drive through.
I posted to your urban 4wd thread details to my favourite in melbourne, worth a look but don't get busted or washed away :)

Oh Great one:) do you know if the front diff can have the ARB diff lock fitted? Is it something they tried on yours? or we are in the "dark" about that one?

I've wondered about those.

What's the possibility that the red "PRESS" fades with time & exposure to sunlight?

don't think so, mine on my 2002 doesn't have it, this came from a 2004 euro pinin model. it was part of the 2.0L GDI euro one with the rear sway bar and rear disks, they were happy to sell sway bar and knob but not the disks unless I bought the entire rear axle

$500 ??

The body shops here would pull that out - and put a coat of paint and you'd never know - take a look at the picture in my "member's ride" thread, that car was T boned from the right side before I bought it - you cannot tell by looking.

DIY - replace rocker cover gasket and guide seals

Replaced rocker cover and spark plug guides

I'd rate it as an EASY job - took me 15mins to strip it down.

The new guide seals looked wrong when I bought them but simply had not flattened with age - my motor has done around 220,000kms so hardly supprising.
Don't forget to lightly linish the top sealing face of the head with sandpaper and wipe clean so the rubber makes a good seal.

remove MAF to air pipe rubber joiner,
remove soli plastic intake pipe from throttlebody
remove top timing belt cover
unplug and unclip most of the plugs on the top of the engine (idle stepper, thermostat and OT switch, cam angle sensor, both coil packs, both vaccume lines)

plug the throttlebody with a clean lint free cloth
pull all coil packs and leads but leave sparkplugs in the head

you will need a 10mm tube spaner or something like this to get the rocker cover bolts out - I just used an imperial one and tapped it smaller to fit snugly. The bolts are only 2.5ftlbs torque so you can torque them up with your fingers without any spanner or bar.
I had to use a screwdriver to chip the old rubber gasket out of the rocker cover as it had siezed in place - be careful not to cut your fingers as the lower rocker cover is very sharp!

Double-Black!

Picked up four 215/70-16 ATR tyres NEW (Ok so they are "ling-long" brand) on stock Outlander 16x6.5" steel rims about a year ago - my old tyres were down to the TWI on the weekend so I swapped them over.

Black on black too much?

hehehe - wheel bearing help?

hahhaha! love it :)

.. on a side note I am still getting a weird noise in my LHF wheel - might be a wheel bearing.

on straight-ahead travel or LH turns it is silent, on RH turns the LH corner makes a vibrating noise - could be the outer lugs on the tyre but i'd expect the same noise from the other side when turning the other way.

my old tyre was near-bald on that edge and still made the same loudness/frequency vibration noise.

all my experience with wheel bearings was more of an occilating noise in time with the wheel doing a full rotation when loaded, this sounds more like damaged balls rolling at 10x the wheel rotation frequency and making the noise and only when forced into the outer race.

From experience, tyres and wheel bearing can do some very unusual things. Some noise are very obvious but not all the time. When you do a right turn, you are loading more weight on the left side. This said, the speed of traveling is an important factor, the faster the bearing turn the louder is going to be. If you have the noise at  10/15 km/h when doing a 90° turn, I would be more incline to think that it is the tyres (again, general rule, not always true). But if you are driving at 80km/h are have more noise on a curve/bend, the bearing would be my first choice. Tyre noise can be very annoying, tread pattern could make the noise on one side not the other, different tyre pressure could affect this, same a faulty suspension. Or just the tyre itself,  different batch when made, slightly different rubber quality....(and not always the cheaper brand). An older tyre, (or one that is left outside on display for a while) stocked for a while, mixed with newly made have a rubber that will be harder and will last longer too.

Swapping tyres around, or even flip on the rim, does sometime give good result.

I find that removing the wheel and the brake pad and turning the axle by hand (one nuts to hold the disc) to be an good option when checking them. This is not 100% always reliable but if your bearing is dangerous you will notice it straight away. Jacking the car and spin the wheel by hand can be OK but some of the "feeling" is not as good.

Your car have 220 000km, I would be surprise that your bearing are getting old anyway. Mud and water crossing, bigger tyres don't help either !

If you need some, I should have the bearing reference...somewhere. If we have the same hub.

BTW, I have seen this type of rim on another io (Daniel ? not sure at all), I just don't like them ! This said it is a little bit like art, as long as you like it !

I don't like them either - but for $99 for rims + tyres it will cost me nearly $80 to strip/refit and balace them onto my mag rims - not worth it short term

Lift finished!!!

I have finally reached my lift goal: to have both hubs just below sill level.

This has always been a good balance of lift and stability with all my 4wd's and I generally don't lift beyond this point.

Front lift: New KYB struts, old style longer soft coils and a 20mm Alu strut-top spacer.
Rear lift: Mazda astina front coils.

Just need to track down some camber bolts to get my wheel camber to around 1 deg top in and I'll be sitting pretty.

PS I have an extra set of strut-top spacers if anyone is looking - $205 for the pair in Aluminium

Any 12mm camber bolt will work.

If you can't find a listing for the iO, check for a Suzuki Vitara or Grand Vitara - it's the same size, and if all else fails Amazon should have Engall's engineering ones for about USD$26 + shipping.

I'd say 1* negative is a bit much (it's out of spec) but what ever suits you.

Your poor io looks like to be in need of some....paint and dent repair....Big difference with your first posting in the first picture.

Agree with Fordem, it doesn't need to be so negative. If it is what you want for handling, I have tried, it doesn't make too much difference either. This said, they do not cost that much to fit. I bought my adjustable plate for this, I found that I am better off (for handling at higher speed) with a higher caster angle, car is a lot less wandering, not that it was that bad before, but much better now.

correct - it is the easiest one to get.

I alternate between the penrite full syn 10-30(extra 10) and the penrite full syn 10-40(extra ten) or my wifes "euromax" full syn 5-40

oil

I am not going to start a discussion on oil, wrong thread for that. BUT....I am not surprised at all....I even guessed it !

Try Valvoline syn power 10W50 next time, you will notice a nice difference in oil consumption without loosing the positive that you noticed when swapping to synthetic oil.

I find the engine a bit smoother under load with synthetic oil but I still have the lifter noise at first start up (mainly when it is cold, often in Canberra :))

You will be happy....let us know what you find, don't be surprise to find that you cut your oil consumption by half.

Happy io

Hi, I don't expect you do

Hi,

I don't expect you do much freeway driving, but if I may ask, what's it like to drive at higher speeds on the road in this set-up? Stability-wise and such?

Have you tried to find the new top speed?

stability

Stability is fine, will still Max out around 165kmh due to wind resistance etc

'nuff said.

This is just a cheap ($160) ultra-racing bar for the 4G93 paj io's. it was suprisingly stiff and light, i gave it a good bend and flex in the vice with my full body weight with no deflection!

instalation is easy however for a 4G94 you need to do the following:
- mount washer bottle in the old style low position (not ontop of strut tower)
- use 5mm longer studs/bolts for strut tops to allow for 5mm base plate
- remove and re-mount TPS 180 degrees, you need to measure the resistance from pins 1-3 before removing and replicate same resistance when mounted upside down.

TPS has a rectangular plug - pins looks like this: [(1)      (3) (4) ] the base-line idle value is in the manual but I chose to replicate it.
pin 1 to pin 3 varies with throttle opening from low/closed to high/open. pin 1 to 4 reads maximum value same as throttle wide open.

you need to unwind the harness a bit to get the wires to reach but it is easy enough to do.

pro's:
stiffer when cornering - feels like a tighter front sway bar
more direct steering especially over bumps or when cornering heavily
better oversteer on gravel

con's:
more feedback when hitting bumps
more vibration through steering on rough roads
