When I start the engine from cold the revs idle at around 1,500 rpm.  If I engage 'Drive' while the revs are that high it lurches into gear which I can understand to be logical but surely the ECU knows the revs are that high due to cold running and the gearbox should engage gear smoothly?  When engaging 'Reverse' from cold it doesn't lurch backwards - this only happens while engaging 'Drive'.  This problem does not occour when the engine is warn and the revs have settled - when warm it behaves perfectly.

The transmission fluid has been flushed but it has not made any improvement with this issue.

I find it hard to believe this normal so does anybody elses autobox behave like this?

auto

I do not have an auto but I think that this is normal....try this, once warm, bring the idle at 1500rpm and  then engage "drive" it will do the same. I don't think that the ECU adjust this.....but I could be wrong !! Simmo should be able to help.

Cold Start Auto

Ahhh yes the old cold start lurch!!

I find on mornings that its like 10-15 degrees Celcius I jump in start it up, and wait 1-2 minutes before doing anything.

Unfortunetly I too get this lunge forward but not its not hugely noticeable as you describe? I usually have my foot half pressed on the brake when going from P to D.

A BIG thing I found made a difference with the lunging when cold AND changing between gears was adjust the kick down cable to be nearly taught and after your auto box fluid change (I did it the same time as MAF clean, throttle body clean and service) was disconnect the battery overnight and plug it in again on the morning and let idle for 15 minutes for ECU re learn / whatever you want to call it.

When I first felt this lunge I tried a variety of differen things.. E.g. Moving slowly through P to D, holding button / not holding button and waiting no time VS up to 5 minutes for revs to drop. I find it lunges sometimes even if the engine revs have dropped back to normal idle.

Have no real fix for this but the lunge my auto used to do is dramatically reduced since 1. Auto box fluid change 2. Kickdown cable adjustment 3. Letting it warm up a few minutes on cold mornigns and 4. Holding brake when going between P-R-N-D-2-1. I cannot stress enough how much of a difference holding the brake while changing between gears on the Auto makes a difference.

Quick question, what Km's has your IO got on it??

My auto would lunge in D and R when the transfer case mounts were shagged, I replaced the engine and gear box mounts at 170/180 from memory and that reduced ALL vibration and made the lurching nearly unoticeable.

Wish I could help more, maybe provide a video? And I will make a comparison one :)

Thanks Simmo

Thanks Simmo - I do hold the brake while moving between P N & D but it still lunges forward.  I can live with it but in the back of my mind I can't believe this is doing the box any good long term.  I mean it is does this every time it is started from cold it is going to be doing this hundreds of times and you can't help thinkng that it is going to break something eventually!  It does seen odd that it only does this when selecting D and not R??

I will have a look into the kick down cable adjustment as that is something I have not considered.  ECU re-learn has been done several times with no improvement.

Cheers yes

no problem

Let us know how you go!!

I might ask some of the big pajero forum guys if they are experiencing these lunges with their autos / the guys with similair auto boxes to ours.

Totally agree that this lunge times a few hundred cold starts can't be good for some components but last auto fluid change (now at 210km) there were no metal shavings or early wear and tear signs I could tell from the drained fluid and magnetic sump plug.

I guess time will tell ;)
