Does the 2L engine fit in the 5 door QA (1.8L engine)

Hi there,

Firstly thanks for setting up an io australia forum - great to see other lovers of this car out there!

I have just killed my first engine - the 1.8L 4G93 in my 5 door io. I was wondering whether it is possible to replace this with the 2L version from the ZR? I am able to get a relatively cheap one of these with low kilometres and think it would make the car a little better, and driveable....

Any help really appreciated!

Theres no reason that it

Theres no reason that it wouldnt fit but how much of the 2ltr car would you need? you would need to check almost every component and make sure they are the same or compatible with the new engine. I would love to do this aswell in the future. Also are the extractors and exaust in the same position as the 2ltr. A good place to start would be to get the two cars next to each other and have a good look at where components are and how the engine is mounted. Good luck.

yeah that's the problem - i

yeah that's the problem - i am not sure either.... I would normally do it myself however it is now in townsville while i am in rockhampton for work... So the mechanics need to do it and if i run into any problems with it the bill could start to run up pretty high. I am really keen on the 2L over the 1.8L, it is also a better price. However i am slightly concerned over the possbilitiy that it won't fit and i run into some big costs.

It currently is not driveable so there is no cheap enough option to get it down to me either :(

I am leaning toward risking it however....

cheers,

The 2ltr would be better in

The 2ltr would be better in every way i think especially for 4wding, The torque range in the 1.8 doesnt come in untill 4500 rpm whereas the 2ltr is around 2500-3000 rpm, would be a much better engine.

My iO was advertised as a 2ltr and it wasnt until about 3 months later that i found out it was actually a 1.8, was pretty bummed but is still a good car. What happened to your engine anyway?

I guess you have to do something otherwise its a heap of metal sitting in your driveway... :)

Im just glad there is a community for us! wasn't sure if there would be enough of us out there when I started building the website, but now im glad i did! :)

As far as I know the only difference between the pajero io 1.8 and 2ltr engine(in Australia)  is the length of the stroke. The ECU would have a different tune tho.

Check the part number of the MAF and the TB to make sure they are the same too.

Hi flow injectors or maybe increased fuel pressure would probably be all thats needed to get it working fine outside of getting the ECU chipped or aftermarket ECU

just out if interest, how much did you manage to find an iO 2ltr for?

I am also keen to replace the

I am also keen to replace the 1.6 in my SWB with a 2.0.  Have you found anywhere that sells the engines or the half cuts?

Also, what are you doing work wise in Rocky? I only ask as that is where I live.

Thanks for all the comments!

Thanks for all the comments! I think i will take the risk with the 2L and if it doesn't work will just get it moved to a mates driveway and sort it out myself.

I fortunately found a 2L for $1200!!!! it only has about 110k kilometers on it which i think is ridiculously good compared to the quote of $2200 (including freight) for the 1.8L. I think this is a little exceptional though so wouldn't take it as the norm.

The timing belt went on the engine - to answer the earlier query - i was just thinking about changing it only two days earlier.... bit bummed about that. I think maybe my brother drowning it in a creek might have helped to push it over the edge.

If i go with it I'll let you all know how it all goes - then will follow up with a coil over change i hope!

If anyone is up around CQ give me a bell.

Cheers,

Boone

I think that in Brasil 2,0

I think that in Brasil 2,0 MPI (SOHC) is installed by factory. It is the same engine as the 1,8, it has only different stroke. The ECU needs new software because of that.

The same situation is with 1,8 and 2,0 GDI engines (DOHC).

In Europe we think how to swap it to diesel engine because of fuel cost (50% cheaper).

I'm in Rocky. I own a 2ltr

I'm in Rocky. I own a 2ltr model.

The engine is the same just stroked. As long as you got the ECU I would assume it will all run pretty smoothly. Might be some gremlins to sort out but its definitely possible.

I haven't driven a 1.8 or 1.6ltr, but event he 2 litre takes abit of revving to make some torque! That said, its an NA 4cylinder, so we can't expect too much now can we

I could rebuild 10 x 4g93 for

I could rebuild 10 x 4g93 for the price of fixing a cracked head on a diesel!

Diesels are great, but when something goes wrong, take out a lone, I was glad to see the back of my delica when it got writen off for that reason. I could have bought an entire brand new V6 from mitsubishi for the same price as replacing the cracked head on the cheap, doing all the work myself!
