Bob did the oil leek out while driving ???? If so might have been from where you put the speedy sleeve in and the heat soak got to it and it stuffed up the seal from the box and dropped all the oil ????, that's the only thing I can think of that might have happened.
Simmo running any box with next to or no oil will stuff it real good but won't know until we hear back from Bob and find out what happened to it, running in soft sand will put strain on any box.
Going by what Bob said that the box shit itself and not transfer the only thing I can think of is the seal let go on the box where it joins the transfer

Filthy filthy lies! I have never heard of a manual box shutting down when it's too hot or being overworked to prevent damage... My auto has once on the beach before... Obviously the auto box is just superior in every application...

A week with new oil and it
A week with new oil and it has tightened up a bit, might just be able to rebuild.
Basically I was pushing it to the absolute max at high rpm at full load at high temp for a long time no backing off and burnt the absolute hell out of the oil.
I recon all the thrust washers will be rooted and likely some or all circlips.
It held all the oil in, not a drop was lost but I recon the box would have almost been glowing hot.
I was getting my fully loaded io to "plane" on the soft deep sand at bribie the whole way down at high tide.
Gearbox
Since your io is getting....older....with lots of kms, maybe you could buy another one instead and keep yours for spare, you could also get a 4 doors if needed. I saw that one, own by a lady (Carolyn), yes auto.....but with very low kms. That would keep you out of trouble for a while.

moral of the story - don't hold 5500rpm at 60kmh in low range on soft sand flat-accelerator for 45minutes non stop and expect your gearbox to love you with open arms.
