Hi All,

I would like to know how suitable an IO is for travelling long distances. I need to travel past Broken Hill from Sydney, perhaps a number of times, but I hear the manual version has gearing that will run the engine at 3800 rpm at 110 kph. Would this bother any of you, or would you just ensure that you ran the best oil and/or additives?

I think i can live without cruise control.

Thanks

Bruce

travelling findings

Hi Bruce,

All I can offer is my findings, when my IO was stock (auto 2.0L) she ran just on 3000rpm at 100km/ph and maybe 3150-3250 at 110km/ph. I am not sure about how different the manual gearing would be BUT I can tell you if you have roof racks with gear on it she'll be pushing a little harder and noticeably different sound and fuel economy. Cruise control is a cheap mod to do however I guess that's user preference, I havn't installed on and I travel an hour return each day on the highway.

Also I carry 2 x 20L jerry cans on any big trips as the tank on the IO is small and range is very dependant upon driving style, weight in the car and the road conditions.

Cheers
Simmo

EDIT: Personally I run Castrol Magnatec 10w-40 but there will be threads on here that discuss the best oil's per climate. Also run injector cleaner through the car every second service for two tanks or so.

Thanks Simmo,

I take your advice on the jerry. Is magnatec a semi-synthetic? I was thinking of adding Morey's Oil additive to all the oils.

I find it very strange that the manual 5th gear doesn't drop the revs to what the 4speed auto does.

I am about to do a swap for a 5dr 5sp in the next few days, but was concerned I would just wear out the motor on very long trips and use too much fuel.

Tyres are finished on the IO, The standard tyre is 215/65. Is there a problem of steering/suspension by changing to what the ZR uses: 215/70 ?

Thanks

Bruce

Struts struts struts..

Hi Bruce,

Yeah from memory it's a semi-synthetic, I know the bottle at the store but don't have one readily available to double check at home!

This is the first time I have heard of the huge difference in RPM between the manual and auto at high speeds as well!

The tyres you can fit under your IO will depend on the front struts and whether they are the newer ones (higher spring pan) or the older ones (lower spring pan)

Mine for instance has the later model front struts and currently runs 225/75/16 and they JUST touched on full lock on stock struts and springs. After lifting it now doesn't scrub. Period :)

I don't know what the size limit is on the older style struts, but someone on here will be able to tell you in an instant OR go searching through the suspension threads.

BTW Should say regardless of year some IO's and ZR have had later / older style struts on them around that 99/2000/2001 model variants so it's best to measure after reading up on the suspension topics in this forum!

Cheers
Simmo

Hi Bruce

Your pretty close on the manual gearing, Mine was 3900rpm at 110kph.

I got bigger tires so its about 150rpm less now.

Longest none stop trip in my car was 3 hours past ballina. Cant rember where now and it goes alright.

The car seems to sit happily up that high in the rpms surprisingly. Every other man and his dog is shocked when I tell them how high it revs on the freeway. But it goes along alright and fuel consumption isn't too bad. I would check your vitals before every trip over 200kms none stop. (coolant, oil etc.) But in saying that i have been slack with checking my oil and it was so low it didnt even register the other day. probably has been like that for months!

Any other questions?

oh and I dont use cruise control although I would probably like too in the future.

Edit: I run 10w-40 Penrite fully synthetic just to differ from simmo :D

Thank You,

Do you know the best source of a cruise control?

I need to get the top revs down but don't want to change diff gears etc, so I will try a bigger tyre to help a bit.

Is the gearing any different in the 2002 2litre models, compared to say 1999?

Thanks

Bruce

215/70R16 will fit.

215/70R16 will fit, even with the lower pan struts - they are the stock size of the japanese domestic production, which is what I have.

Sydney Broken Hill

The io will do it with no problem, not the fastest or the most confortable but it will do it.

The fuel tank on the io is not the biggest, but this trip have plenty of petrol station, just don't miss them ! This road have plenty of traffic.

Don't worry about the gearing, again not the best but it won't be a problem.

Getting the 215/70 is a good idea, they should fit and it will put your speedo perfect (my finding, I found the 215/65 to be around 3% under of my GPS)

You don't need a special oil for this, this said regular oil change needs to be done...always, not just for this trip or this car. I wouldn't change the oil just for this, but I would check all level before during and after the trip. May be a new air filter (under load the fuel economie of this car is very sensitive to a dirty air filter) and check the plug.

As for any car, overloading, over speed, no services, no check up, and your chances having problem, on any trip, and you run a much bigger risk.

One thing I will never do, do a very long trip with an unknown car, as you have no idea how good or bad it is.

Now, if you intend to do the trip at 120 or more, with 2 tonne of luggage...the io won't last many year and will be heavy on fuel. Stay around 105/110 at the most, it should be fine.

Don't waste your time at Wilcannia ! and PLEASE, go to Silverton, best pub....

Happy io

No problem whatsoever...

Not sure what kind of Kms you are planning to cover, but we have driven the IO to Adelaide, Victor Harbour and Melbourne couple of times from Gold Coast. No problem whatsoever. One of the trips from Melbourne, the car was packed to the brim...we were moving :) We have a manual 1.8l, and never had any problem.
