So after selling my loved defender i finally got an IO from the 'for sale' thread on here.

It was ToddG's io, with the SS4 issues, seemed his mechanic had overlooked the issue and it was just a small pin had dropped out of the actuator rod, then Todds mate had compounded the issue by saying it must be the solenoids and removing them completely, without a 'before' diagram i guess as when i got the car they were in the glovebox with the plumbing seperate! yay. Thanks to Claude and Foredem i had this licked and shes working a treat now.

So it has a new engine from a wrecked Lancer (40000km old) and i had read a post by Todd stating the mechanic said it was all in good shape.....tho this was the same mechanic that couldnt find the SS4 issue after 2 days and gave the car back...... anyhow I lifted it, tinted it, serviced it, fixed it, and put new shoes on her and now its ready to roll.

Mods:

Front lift: (I know this is not legal and the bearing issues it is supposed to cause due to widening the track but have done this before and have never had an issue, or had to deal with insurance so i may eat my words if i have a crash...)

so front: Struct extenders: dropping the top hub bolt hole to the bottom and a sgtrengthening plate made of a 40x40mm 5mm thick steel angle, drilled at 70mm intervals 3 times, a spacer at the top and a new high tensile bolt to re-bolt the bottom. This costs less than $20 to lift and is stronger than the original plate holding it, feel free to comment on it but i ahve done it on much heavier cars and never had an issue. This also doesnt change the ride of course as it just drops the hub, yet to drop the diff. Have been told acytel but spoke to the supplier and they suggested nylon as acytel shatters when shocked?? never delt with it before.

Rear: i used late 80s celica springs, this will get you a varied lift depending if you want to cut the coils out but they are MUCH longer than the original springs and have a heavier feel. I will browse thru U PULL IT soon for some shocks but the ones on there are ok for the road ATM. This lift $40 so far, prob free if your thrifty.

Wheels and Tyres: 15" 2002 TJ Wrangler Rims with 235x75 cooper discoverer ST's $600 for the 5 from gumtree. OK these have to be spaced out to clear the caliper....i know this is frowned apon but again my care factor is low and the bearing thing, never had an issue, also the back of the caliper has to be "race engineered' with a grinder (only about 2-3mm from the outer edge) to give decent clearance for the rim.

Roof racks are pro racks with a cage courtesy of Gumtree for $80 (+$100 freight from NSW, that killed me)

Tint: again 20% like all my cars.........legality = Not but never been bothered by the police, ever.

New fuel (repco brand $55) and air filter so far, oil and oil filter when i get a chance (bought them and sitting in the shed), didnt realsie i had to remove the bash plate so havnt done it yet.

Next mods:

think ill try make a front bar like the silver brazil IO, i cant see it being that hard and the requirements by govt for manufacture are grey for a bar that doesnt have 'loops/hoops' and isnt over 1m from the ground. With LED light bar

Diff drop and maybe another 20mm in the front but really i think it has enough.

So all uppurchase price + trucking it from NSW to SA and rego, filters and parts (wipers etc), little bits and pieces, the mods above+ factoring for NSW rego refund and selling the original wheels and tyres it has cost me about $5000, pretty happy so far.

Thanks

How about a picture ...

of that front strut extender - I'm having a hard time imagining it.

Thats the only pic i have

Thats the only pic i have atm, it just drops the hub down one full hole. 70mm

You have to adjust the brake line mount a bit to allow for stretch, i just used the same mount but drilled a new hole and twisted the bracket. Not an issue at all.

It depends how you like to do your mods, this doesnt decrease or increase travel just increases clearance from the ground and from the tyre to the strut base plate (as opposed to the top spacers which increase ground clearance but not the issue of tyre to strut, theoretically anything over 50mm is illegal (body or suspension lift), not getting a professional to fit it is 'illegal', overall tyre/wheel diameter 15mm larger than standard is 'illegal'  so insurance wont pay for majority of 4wds i guess, and with my experience they figure out any way to avoid paying anyhow. My mate got pulled over last week in his navara as he had pulled the muffler off as he was awaiting his new one and got over excited, cops pulled him over for the noise, this nav has over 100mm lift total, wheels and tyres are out the guards by 40+mm and 35" muddies, has illegal tint, plus im sure it has many other illegal mods, cops said "well as long as you have one coming no dramas, dont let us hear you again" and drove off. They dont care, we are not 'hooning' like the fast 4's rotaries and big v8s getting to high speeds annd sideways on suburban streets and many cops i personally know cant be bothered handing out defects as they know we will just put it back to normal, then put it straight back on.

I must say SA has it easier than other states, once its regoed it doesnt need another vehicle check, even when we sell it so we can get away with quiet a bit, until of course we get defected which is usually connected to being a 'hoon' or doing something silly or being a smart arse to the cops. I do none of these so i dont worry. We have FEDS at the airport who do vehicle and ID checks on all the staff cars on a weekly basis, i have heaps of mates with hugely illegal setup 4wds and not one has been defected or questioned as they know we do it for recreation and usually to enjoy the country with family, alot of the cops have the same setups!.

That's more than adequate...

For some reason I was thinking one "length" of angle and couldn't understand how it was fitted - it's also unlike any other lift I've seen.  I suspect 70mm is pushing the limits of the CV, but, since you're working on the "diff drop" you should be OK.

I won't comment on "legality", in my neck of the woods we have no regulations governing lifted (or lowered) vehicles, and even though we are required to have a "certificate of fitness" which has to be renewed anually, it is legally permissible for the officer to issue the certificate without actually inspecting the vehicle, if, in his opinion, it is road worthy.
