Hi Guys,

Just replaced my front struts with standard KYB excel-g ones. In the process I fitted in the standard springs from Singlecell's old-style 1.6L io.

My springs were coloured Blue dot and Orange dot, Single cells were Blue dot and Red/pink dot.

The older springs had an extra half a turn so that the ends of the coil terminated on opposite sides of the spring (the passengers coil ended about 1" sooner in both cases)
The new springs sat on the bench only 10mm shorter but the coil ends terminated almost directly above each other - see pic below.

The 10mm difference when at rest under no compression is fairly irrelevent - the extra turn increased the coil density and made them stiffer to compress (see spacing between coil turns, blue lines below) - took a fair amount of force to compress them enough to fit. I gained approx lift 22mm both sides at the front and the ride is still soft without any vibration etc.

I fitted a pair of astina springs from singlecell in the rear as well - they were a PAIN to fit, especially on the drivers side and had to use a compressor to get them in. with the rear shocks disconnected and the brake hoses taught, the springs still were a tad too long to shove in. The rear now sits about 35mm higher than before giving the car a minor forward rake.

I have towed my trailer loaded and the back sits down now almost level with the front and I'm sure with passengers an gear it will ride level. I wouldn't go any tller or stiffer than I've gone as with 225-75-16 tyres I won't be able to slide my bum off the seat and touch the ground when getting in and out :)

..and the rear wobble has gone WOOOO!!! stiffer springs were the key. Rear sway bar will go on to help with body roll though.

spring

I am glad to hear that you are happy with the Astina spring, and fixed your pb, for the cost they are a great find.wink

Regarding the driver side fitting of the rear spring, I took the jack, put it on the tyre with a rubber block on the top, open the jack between the tyre and the inside of the guard....you can get the extra needed cm to easily fit the spring. I disconnected the shocks, but haven't removed the brake hose, but it is a bit tight for the later.

The 4 doors io have the plastic conduct for the fuel tank at this spot, but with care (and a rubber block or a piece of timber) it doesn't need much pressure. I have done that more than 10 time...work perfectly, takes 2 min to set up.

Happy io
