im think of buying the square steel pipe to use as cross beams, fixing the basket to them and bolting the whole thing down

roof basket

A friend of mine have lended one for me.  I ended up buying an extra set of cross bar to go across as the base of the basket was flexing in the middle and  getting close to touch the roof (too close to my taste anyway!).  On his Suzuki sierra, he used to put a piece of foam between the basket and the roof. At the time I used some small piece of hardwood to match the inside angle of the existing bar (close to 90° angle) and some U bolt. I now have a Thule pod.

Happy io, and have a good holidays

I think the links you\\\\\\\'ve

I think the links you've posted look good and I think these kind of roof baskets are really comfortable. I have one as well for transporting all the various sports gear and the serenta hampers   when I go for holidays. It's practical to have a good roof basket for this kind of cases. You never know when you will need it!

I ordered this about a week ago

After hesitating for many months I ordered the Rage Powersports basket shown above - 39" wide x 43½" long x 6" high with a 150lb weight limit - these are available with a fairing (or wind deflector) which I did not order, as I figure I can make my own at significantly lower cost

The hesitation is caused by the fact that it needs to be shipped from the US to Guyana - in order to save on the shipping, smaller stuff goes to my sister in Florida and then comes over with whoever's travelling next, but roof baskets are a little too large to be packed in a suitcase, and require different arrangements - I'll be in the US on Wednesday and was going to have a freight consolidator ship it over, but I got lucky, I just found out that a friend is packing a container, so I all I need to do is drop it off at his place, and in a couple of weeks it'll be in Guyana.

Edit

After a number of attempts to both link to an image and to upload the image, I've given up - if you're sufficiently curious you can use Google, the model number is RB-DLX-V2.
