Hello there,

it has been bloody cold in the SEQLD hahhahahahh... ok 10-15  degrees at night, but enough to create a minor problem on my little iO.

When the car is cold, the 3rd gear is hard to go in, and feel like there is a mecanical friction somewhere when I push the gear stick...

All thats is gone after few min.

Any idea? need new oil maybe the viscosity is wrong?????

third gear

maybe cold oil,

i changed to nulon sae 80 last year and found no issues afterwards with this.

you may find it's actually the bearing in the flywheel that cradles the input shaft of the gearbox being sticky and dragging the gearbox slightly even when clutch is in. - my holden is chronic for this as it doesn'thave a bearing but a bronze bush

I would say that you have a mechanical internal pb. New oil might help, additive could help too (with the new oil, not the old one)

I would change the oil ASAP, the more you leave it as it is the more likely you are making more damage (ie, water contamination, no much oil left, wrong oil...)

Snake Oil

I don't know if its related entirely to your problem but my auto started to develop a slight slip when booting in and dropping 2nd to first and it would start to slip in the higher revs... Changed the Auto gearbox oil and it stopped slipping nearly entirely but was still noticeable (also reduced the running temp signicantly, used to be able to feel it in the footwell if you were having a "hoon") but then I used the Lucas stop slip stuff.

A LOT of good and bad reviews pasted on the internet but I thought for the $20 something bottle of Lucas stop slip which also claimed to help shifting issues the slight slippage did go away. Yeah yeah a lot of people say its snake oil and/or has the potential to damage components but the way I saw it there was there is an auto gearbox at the local wreckers with 110km on it and mine was potentially on the way out anyway, have a shot right? Within 1 tank of juice after the lucas stuff the slip was gone entirely!! and that was weeks after the auto service so i presume its effects were unrelated?

I was driving like a granny for months before changing the oil and now the lucas stuffs in I'm happy to get the revs into it every now and again when its needed. 15,000km later no slippage!! Words cannot even explain how much better the auto responded after changing the oil... was about 50/60km between the interval :( Will try to halve that in the future!

oil - gearbox

Hi Max,

OK - open the user handbook from the glovebox - oils and capacities are in the last few pages, right at the back - should be SAE 80 2.4L for the manual gearbox.

Drain plug is in the center of the bottom of the gearbox - big flat silver hex nut about 24mm socket.

Fill plug is in the passengers side of the gearbox - half way up the side next to the exhaust - 17mm ring spanner will fit on it (use a ring spanner not an open-ended spanner!!)

You'll need to seal the plugs when you put them back in - i use this stuff on the thread and do don't need to do them up very tight - just normal tight.

to get the oil up into the gearbox fill-hole in the side i use a simple drum pump etc - looks like this:

hook the end into the fill-hole then pump in the oil from outside the car - once the oil runs out the fill hole it's full.

allow level to normalise and screw in fill plug.

Always drop oil into a clean drop container and examine for debris etc (broken teeth - steel scraping etc)

gearbox

I will check the amount of oil tonight, but I think that it is around the 3 litre (2.7).

Go under the car look at the gearbox, you will find a square plate with about 12 bolt to hold it in place, at his center a bigger bolt (over 20 mm23/24 ?) remove it, this will drop the oil. Try to get the oil to drop in a clean container, inspecting the old oil could be informative...

Now check on the gearbox, exhaust side, roughly at the swaybar level, look on the side of the gearbox, you will find a 17/19 mm ? bolt, this one is for filling.

To fill it can be annoying and awkward. What I do is I buy a 4 litre bottle and a 1 litre one (Castrol). The one litre castrol have an outlet extension on the top. Put the extension in the fill hole then move the bottle a bit higher on the side of the gearbox, press the bottle, let the air go back in....this way you can easily put about half a litre to 700 ml, then fill up the 1 litre bottle and repeat till the oil overflow from the gearbox. Car must be a level. Of course there is 100 way of doing it or special tools for it, this one is not the fastest or the best but it work and you don't need anything. Degrease when finish, this way if you have a leak it will be very easy to see.

I put some plumber teflon tape on the thread of the plug, close to the washer, Bob use permatex ?? I think, both are cheap and reliable. Or get a new washer if you fancy...Do not overtight...damaging the thread will be a pain to fix.

I hope this help

Happy io

Manuals...

You guys and your Manuals!!

It was around a 7L refill for the auto box!!

At least I just have to disconnect the coolant line to radiator and sump drain to empty and fill through the filler hole :P

Good luck Mad Max! If you lived closer would definetly drop in and lend a hand when I can!

One caution ...

ALWAYS - remove the fill plug before removing the drain - not only will it drain faster, but this will prevent a situation where you have drained and cannot refill, thus rendering the vehicle unuseable.

good result

Yes, great to hear...and you have done it all. That is the only and best way to learn and understand your 4x4. Try to keep some record of the work that you do on it, that could come handy.
