It's just come tax time and I am looking at a hefty return, trying to invest and gain access to the lifted & locked IO club ;)

Looking for:

- Big Pajero Gen 1 10 Bolt RG1 Banjo Rear Diff with factory/aftermarket Locker OR

- Locker to fit 28 Spline (ARB Number RD210) / RD05 OR

- Any locker combination that will fit a 2002 Pajero IO Auto, prefer rear locker over front at this stage - Happy to swap complete diff in if neccasary

Cheers Simmo!!

Edit: The cheapest price I got for a new locker was $1900 installed with air compressor from ARB with warranty etc etc.. Considering my IO only owes me 5-6K not including maintenance I'd be happy to muck around with a cheap second hand Gen 1 diff w/Locker and keep my good factory LSD rear diff in the shed etc

2002 5dr Pajero IO QA 2.0L Auto - Lifted, Locked!! 1.925 Low Range - Muddies (205/80/16) - Redback Extractors to 200cell cat to dump at diff Exhaust

locker

If you choose the ARB one, upgrade the compressor to be able to pump your tyres with it. The one for the locker only is too small for inflating the tyres. They fitted mine under the driver seat, great to use.

While I am 110% happy with the ARB locker, I did get 3 times some oil in the air line, fixed with NO problem at no cost to me every time, but annoying! . Since it is now perfect.

If ARB can fit one, maybe a e-locker from eaton could be a option too.

A front one will be great too!

Happy io

Hi Harrop,

Just wondering if you have had any progress / update on supplying an e-locker to suit a 10 bolt RG1 8 Inch banjo diff? Same as the big V6 Pajero Gen 1 83-86.

ARB use the part number RD05 / RD210 in these diffs to provide air lockers but I am trying not to go down this path.

My car is a 2002 Pajero IO 5dr 2.0L Auto if that helps.

Cheers,

James

Hi James

Thank you for your interest in the Harrop ELocker

Unfortunately at this time we do not have an ELocker available to suit your vehicle.

Due to our back log and current supply demands this is something that unfortunately we could not take on just at this minute, however I will hold on to your details in case this changes in the near future.

All the best with your Pajero.

Hello Harrop, I have been told by many friends in various 4wd forums that you make e lockers for a wide variety of vehicles! I drive a 2002 Pajero IO (little 4cyc version of the Big Pajeros with same running gear) which shares the same rear diff as a Gen 1 Pajero specifically the 10bolt RG1 8inch banjo rear diff. ARB are the only other company I know of that supply a rear diff locker for this vehicle and I am trying to stay away from an air locker. Your E lockers look very impressive and was wondering if you would in anyway be interested in looking at a Eaton Harrop branded rear e locker for my vehicle. I live in Brisbane. Feel free to call or email back. Interested to hear your thoughts. Cheers, James

Obviously I am very happy to go down the ARB air locker path after reading good reviews on here and seeing Bobs have a caining in the flesh but thought I'd use the ARB vs Harrop to see if they'll bite and manufacture IO e lockers ;)

ARB

yeah i've got the little one - i should have bought the big compressor but didn't - ah well.

my ARB still blows oil out a little bit - been back 3 times no joy - using it often does help and frankly oiling my chassis is helping fight corrosion!

..

given the low greek dollar value - maybe time to purchase the front lockers!!!

Update - LOKKA

May be a LOKKA alternative, just finding options here guys!! ARB still seems the best bet regardless of any oil issues. Being able to engage/disengage is great.

If someone knows the details of the front diff it would be sweet to have an auto lokka in teh front that only gets engaged when in 4x4, happily sacrifice the ability to drive 4H onroad for front locker at the ~$600 range and then get an ARB rear

Hi Tom,
Wish I was an expert! Just have done a lot of homework and swapped in a same model wrecker diff when I broke the center of my last LSD rear (long story)

Currently in the rear is an LSD 28 Spline 10 Bolt RG1 8 inch Banjo diff, and I made a mistake its the RD05 which has since been replaced by the RD210 in the ARB air locker range that fits into this diff.

I do not know the size of the front diff unfortunately but I can confirm its open diff not LSD. It is most likely what's in the same as the gen 1 4 cylinder front diffs.

Great to hear you make a lokka for my rear! Can you give any estimate for supply of a lokka to fit?

And do you know of any reputable mechanics who are competent with lokka install around Brisbane?

Cheers,

James

I would NOT recommend an auto-un-locker for the front.

Not too many people seem to be aware the so called automatic lockers are really automatic unlockers - they default to a locked mode, and allow which ever wheel is turning faster to free run - this is fine on a vehicle with free wheeling hubs, which disconnect completely, but on an iO, the right wheel is always connected - the vacuum freewheel mechanism only disconnects the left wheel.

Yeha I saw some review of the Kaiser auto lockers on here here having that problem, seems an electronic mechanical OR air locker is the way to go.

ARB..

Well i have requested another quote from ARB and seen a huge change in prices...

December 14 - Nundah Store Email quote: $1995 supply and fit with normal Compressor

December 14 - Caboolture ARB Chrismast special $1799

July 15 - Nundah Store Email : $1793 + $563 (with bigger compressor) totalling $2356

Awaiting to hear why there is such a huge difference in prices.. Especially a ~$600 price spike in 6 months!!!!

Good Morning Sam,

Please see attached for a quote that was obtained just before Christmas last year.

Is there any reason behind the price difference between then and now?

I spoke on the phone with someone at the Caboolture ARB store who was very helpful at the time and said they could beat that previous quote again as a Christmas special and have the whole kit supplied and installed for $1799 almost $600 cheaper then what you are quoting today?

I have no requirement for a bigger compressor also as I have on board air built into the roof top tent.

My main concern is the price and warranty as a few of the Pajero IO owners with ARB air lockers have had repairs done to oil leaking back up the air line etc all fixed for free under warranty.

Cheers,

James

Hi James,

Thanks for your email,

The rear ARB Air locker supplied and fitted to your vehicle is $1793, you may also need to replace the diff bearings depending on the condition of your diff. The Airlocker is activated via an onboard air compressor, the Air compressor we fit will also be able to be utilised to inflate your tyres. The compressor supplied and fitted is an additional $563 including the hose inflation kit.

I currently have the parts available out of our warehouse and could look at organising fitment for late this month or early August,

Any questions please let me know,

air compressor upgrade

$563 for the upgrade, really ! What a joke! At the time it was around $150 extra for mine. $563 extra is too much. I think that I have the arb-ckma12 and it should cost around $300 + kit to inflate tyres ($50 to $80?)  Then you need to deduct the cost of the one included in the quote, the arb cksa12 ?? at around $170. Fitting should be very close in price.

So it should be close to (300 + 80) - 180 = $200 NOT $563 !!

IMO anyway

Totally totally agree with you!! The PDF quote I got as the "christmas special: was $995 for the locker, $200 for compressor and seals and $800 fo install.. and Caboolture could do it for $1799 when they saw that quote... That was wth the RD210, RDPROMO CKMA12 171302 + Fitment..

Can't  understand how a bigger compressor with air line = $563 when the standard is $200..

I intend to go to the ARB caboolture day and see if we can work out a price!!! Seemingly happy with ARB's after sales support bu don't want to pay 2grand+ for a rear locker :'(

Would pay 1.5-1.8k if I had to.

This is their latest reply..

Hi James,

The quote you have was from a special Christmas promotion we ran last year, this was an exclusive promo run for the Christmas period hence 30 day quote period. I unfortunately cant replicate the same promotion as this was a Christmas only deal and there have also been several product price increases since this promotion was run last year.

If you are keen I would suggest going to ARB Caboolture’s open day tomorrow, they will be running an Air locker promotion for the day, Im unsure of the exact promotion but it should be worth the drive down.

As always any issues with an ARB product or fitment will be covered if within our Warranty period, the Air lockers now have a 5 year warranty.

If you get it for a bit under $2000 with the upgraded compressor (maybe even get the tyre inflator kit too) and 5 years warranty, to me it is a good price.

If they can give us supply and install for under 2k with the bigger compressor I'll be putting down a payment tomorrow haha!! And be joining the IO locker club ;)

Guess this means I'm keeping the IO longer than expected, was going to sell after Uni studies (still ~12 months away from graduating) but with my 21st this month and Tax refund on its way I'm thinking the ARB locker might be best value for money and convince us to keep the IO for the well forseeable future!

My mate in that suzuki from the most recent woodford pics has an e locker rear.. CLICK CLICK CLICK on the corners but seems to work alright! I believe he got his front ARB air locker for something like $1200 with compressor for tyres and installed himself (4th year mechanic) I might hit him up!

Or...

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/HF-Air-Locker-RD100-3-73-5-38-Ratios-27-S...

If you're up for an experiment - and your mate can help install.

Looks like ARB have cracked down on the listings of the cheap chinese copies, but you could try to email this place and see if they have the RD05 - they used to...

ARB made a video a while back discrediting the chinese copies, but while the aussie one took more force to break, the chinese one took a hell of a lot - more than a clapped out 2.0L could provide I bet!!

Size is not important; it's how you use it that matters!

well well well

Unfortunately for the better or worse I put a deposit down in a ARB rear locker today! They ended up matching their previous promo and I will have it installed later in the week :)

Will post multiple vids! Especially in comparison to the vid where I broke my original LSD diff.. I'll video that same track with lockers!!

Had a ball today, the mud tyres are such an advantage!

Well done ! Are you getting the upgraded compressor ? When you bring the car to get the work done, ask them to give you back the original diff.

The more grip you have, the less you will need to "molest" the io....just a different fun !!

looks like the big comressor is only 1.5x the size of the mini one so it should fit no worries under your drivers seat

The kit on the invoice has the same  arb-ckma12  Claude supplied (invoice says CKMA12 MDM High Flow compressor + 171302 hoses/pump up STD kit)

If Claude could fit his under the seat hopefully this one will too! Only things I can see people complaining about is heat but at worst they'll be pumping 29/30" tyres from 15-35 PSI which is way under the stress levels the people with 35" tyres complain about.

I'm anxiously awaiting a call from ARB when the parts come in to book install... I want to call them to touch base but I've already been on the phone twice this week haha...

Any hints to speed up time???

compressor

Yes it does fit under the seat, you have a picture in my built thread, post 117. Print it and show it to them, that might save you from "no it cannot be done" !!!

Yes it does get hot, but as you said, if you only do 4x 225/75/16 it will be 100 % fine and it is relatively quick too. I think that for 35 inches tyres it is just too small.

Hints to speed up time.....clean your hand bag...lol....

I fitted one of those ARB

I fitted one of those ARB twin pump systems recently to a friends nissan dual cab ute and mounted the pump high up in the tray section and put a switch on the outside of the canopy so he didn't need to crawl inside the canopy itself. It's high up and won't see any water unless he drowns the whole car.
