I don't think it's a sensor.

To get those lights to stay on would require two out of a total of six sensors (switches) to be defective - what are the odds of both of them failing at the same time?

The diagnostic steps are in the service manual which can be downloaded from the resource section of the forum - check the automatic transmission section - even if your vehicle has a manual, the steps are the same - you will need a test meter for the procedure.

Basically what you're going to do is probe the voltage at the inputs to the 4WD indicator controller and make sure they change the way they should as you shift through the 2H, 4H, 4HLc & 4LLc positions - it's not difficult, but, it is time consuming because you have to remove the driver's seat and the carpet to reach the controller.

You can also test the switches themselves one by one from underneath the car - unplug the switches - and then use the meter to test for continuity to the body of the transfer case as you shift through the various positions - five of the switches are on the transfer case, the sixth one is on the front axle.

What exactly do the front green lights do?

If the front green lights are always on regardless of the superselect lever position - the possibilities are - a)  the 4WD is not working properly, b) the 4WD indicator controller is defective or c) there is damaged/defective wiring.  If, on the other hand, they are flashing when they should be on or off, then there are a number of other possibilities.

The front green lights should be OFF in 2H and ON in any of the 4WD positions - they flash to indicate a mismatch between the transfer case selection and the front axle freewheel clutch position.

When 2H is selected in the transfer case, two switches on the transfer case close, one grounds a pair of solenoid operated VSVs (Vacuum Switching Valve) located on the inner right fender - the VSVs route vacuum from the engine intake manifold to a freewheel clutch actuator on the front axle causing it to engage the clutch and connect the left CV axle to the differential; the second switch sends a ground signal to the 4WD indicator controller.  When the front axle clutch engages a third switch (on the axle) sends a ground signal to the 4WD indicator controller.  If the 4WD controller sees neither of these ground signals it turns the lights off, if it sees both,it turns the lights on, if it sees one without the other, if flashes the lights.

Tell me what the lights do in 2H, 4H, 4HLc & 4LLc and I'll tell you where to look for the problem.

Thanks for the information.

Thanks for the information. The 4x4 4H front axle are defintly working testing it with the car jacked up, and it disengaged back to 2H as well when I move the gear lever back to 2H. But the front lights are alwasy on. Which sensors do  check or replace as the agents wantsto replace the entire set,,,,.............at a huge cost.  Tkhs  my email address are toppie4x4@gmail.com much appreciated.
