Has anyone found any reference to the 1.6L in the IO manual, I know I have posted the 1.6L engine manual.  But I am chasing the info on the car, such as how my rear diff is smaller.

What's your frame number?

Check under the hood - what are the first four characters of the chassis number?

For most of the iOs I've looked at it's starts with HnnW where n is a number - if the first n is a 6 it's a 3 door, if it's 7 it's a 5 door, and the second n denotes the engine size a 6 is a 1.8, and a 7 is a 2.0.

different diff

I just did, what you probably did!, look in the different manual on the forum. I could be wrong but I found not less than 7 different reduction ratio for the rear diff : 3.917 / 4.100 / 4.300 / 4.636 / 4.875 / 4.900 / 5.111.  I have checked mine (2002, 2 litre, manual) and it have the sticker with 4.900 on it. We know that this one can be swap with the ARB diff lock RD05. If I find more...

Good luck,

Happy io

I dont recall seeing anything on my rear diff indicatiing what it was, ill have a look when I get the chassis number today.

Even still, there isnt a reference to the car even coming in a 1.6L in any of the workshop manuals I have read.

Well I got it. No 1.6L info at all, engine or car differences.  But it seems to be a much more complete and easier to follow copy of a 1.8/2.0 litre one. Ill upload it later.  In regards to all the rear diff rations you found.  It say this:

They originally came out with a 4.875, but in 2001 it was changed to a 4.636 in a manual and 4.900 in an auto because of the new 2.0L engine.

Then in 2002, The manual stayed at 4.636 and the auto went to a 5.111.  But it seems that may be only on the 1.8L. Whhhiiccchhhh is weird as it looks like in 2002 only 2.0Ls were released in Australia.

Maybe it cause this is a Pinin manual and not completely relevant to us.

I dont think that would make a difference with the arb diff locker as the gear thats determine all that are reused from the original diff.  My diff unfortunately is physically smaller and is designed for smaller axles. Sigh.

ARB diff lock

That was quick!!

For the ARB diff lock, I am not sure, but I thought that they use the existing "ring gear' but not the side gears. The side gears (of the ARB diff) would need to match your existing one to be able to use your original axle shafts. Again, I am not sure...other input welcome !!!  Bob may have mentioned something about that ?

But as you said, the size of the diff need to match as well!!

Yeah you are correct, they reuse the drive gear. But the arb ones side gears wont fit mine.  I am interested in the manual as the IOs front has the same amount of splines as my rear so I am curious if the kaiser auto locker for the front will fit in my rear, I wouldnt mind the risk buying one as if it didnt fit I could put it in the front. But I might then find out my front is different from everyone elses too. Hense why I am chasing a manual!!!

I'm sure you'll find a buyer

I'm sure you'll find a buyer for the front Kaiser on here if it doesn't fit.

Very confusing with all the varying parts on these vehicles. Almost like they were cobbled together from whatever bits they had laying around the factory at the time!

Size is not important; it's how you use it that matters!

left over

Lol...a bit of this a bit of that, left over from other Mitsubishi. This said, by the pictures of the Kaiser diff from Ktm, there is a fair difference in size from the front to the rear, again different year...

I think that Singlecell have a frankensteinio (a good one, that is!)

I love my Io, but Mitsubishi is not making it easy....do you think that Mitsubishi have some more info. When I went to buy the front diff cover gasket (yes, the one that doesn't exist!), they asked me to give them my chassis number to find the gasket....Maybe you could see them (spare part) and see if they can help you regarding what diff you have....

P.S what is happening with your new set of tyres/wheels...

Mitsubishi dealers use a computerised look up system, which asks for the frame number as step 1, it won't show you anything until a frame number is entered - if you don't give them your frame number, or your frame number is not listed (because the car was not built for the market you are in), the dealer really cannot assist - if they have a frame number for a similar vehicle, they can put that in - BUT - that creates the possibility that the parts listed will not fit your vehicle.

I am getting them soon.  I keep spending my money on silly things like a house loan. haha.

My rule for spending money on my car is that I have to get the money from sources other then my normal job pay, so I have to find overtime or cash jobs etc. So it is taking time.

But soon..... soon......

I have also been looking at parts to turbo my car...... oh will it ever end.
