Not too sure on the ratios. I am slowly amassing more knowledge.
The main plan is to get some beefier bash plates. Then play with some offset steelies and spacers to see what rubber I can squeeze onto it.
I also want to sort out some recovery points for the off road days.

I like that you call it the sister :) as the iO is the tougher one, even if it is smaller :)
Loved my delica tho, I had plans for a 6" lift and 33"s for it, But it just cant come close to the pinin for off road performance, Suprizingly good tho! great off road camper :) was perfect for all the hang gliding trips i did at the time.
I pulled the middle row or seats out and had a nice double bed in the back each night, and can still fold the rear seats down to be a 5 seater by day!

Been a while since I have updated this thread.
My car has been good for the past year but just recently was starting to stumble a bit and seemed down on power.
Time for a strip down.
Yup, I was coked up more than an 80's popstar. Luckily I have a friend with a bead blaster. Half an hour and my intake manifold looked like new.
And while I had access to a workshop it would be rude not to get a blanking plate made for the EGR pipe.
Blanking plate in place under throttle body.
Treated the girl to a new filter to round off the day.
Was like a disco of engine check lights for the first five minutes as the fuel trims were out by miles with the egr blanked and loads of fresh clean air available. Quick blast working the full rev range sorted that out. Now idles spot on 400rpm and pulls clean all the way to redline.
I am hoping to start working on the exhaust next. I did the downpipe last year. I will replace or delete the cat and replace the centre pipe. A FOX backbox will be installed to give the car a more fruity burble.
Did you?
Did you look down in the intake ports? What was it like down in there?
This intake "clean" is on the cards for my iO as soon as I can make the time - probably toward the end of August. I wasn't sure what sort of gasket it had between the intake & the head (your pictures show a re-useable gasket), so I ordered the gasket set just to be safe. I've had the set for about a month, but needed to get some other things looked at first.
It's also good to know that it'll run with the EGR blanked off without generating a check light - that was one of my concerns.
I looked into the intake
I looked into the intake ports but it is hard to see anything. Once it was all reassembled I sprayed a fair amount of aerosol carb cleaner through the air intake.
My plan is to do this again each weekend for the next month or two. Should clean up the ports a bit.
I also plan to reroute the head vent and PCV through a catch can to stop the oil dripping down the intake runners.
From what I can gather, cars after 2004 (Mitsu OBD2 change) might throw an EML for EGR blanking. Pre 2004 they are MUT interface and don't monitor EGR specifically, just fuel/air trims.
I will keep you updated if I start getting EML's further down the road.
I've done the carb cleaner thing...
Rather than spray carb cleaner past the MAF, I've sprayed it through a vacuum hose on the intake plenum - specifically the one that supplies vacuum to the SuperSelect 4WD system - didn't seem to have too much of an impact on performance but curiously enough, it did quiet the lifters down.
I may pour cleaner (gum-out or similar) into the intake ports one by one (with the valves closed) and allow it to soak whilst I have the intake off - and then disable the injection (by unplugging the crank sensor) and crank it over with the plugs out - blow whatever crap gets dislodged out the plug holes.
EGR back to normal now
Having the EGR blanked off has a strange effect on the engine.
Fuelling struggles to compensate after a few runs. But the main issue is failed hot starts.
Engine will not fire back up once stopped, unless it is left to cool enough to engage the fast idle control.
I had to break out the tools in a petrol station last night to swap the blank plate back to the EGR gasket.
Still feels like a new car though with most of the gunge cleaned out of the intake.
