Hi folks, andy here, i live in the north of scotland and use my little pinin for winter driving, 4x4 offroad fun and when i go shooting.

Having rebuilt a landrover discovery, i fancied something different and got this for a good price a year or so ago.

There is little in the way of special parts you can buy for a pinin in the uk so had to use a bit of brain  and power tools, which has kept me busy so far.

made a bash plate from 3mm steel

 

converted the front suspesion to coilovers using Jamex vw golf mk2 coilovers and a home made adapter.

 

 

Still have original struts which have had the spring mounts cut and raised to be able to fit 29" tyres

 

She will be getting this new stainless catalytic converter fitted this week.....made to measure by vortex exhausts

 

 

Bridgestone tyres at the front and Yokohama Geolanders on the back

looks pretty nice. so with the vw coilovers does that mean you can fit whatever size tyre the wheel arch will allow for?

also did you cut and weld the spring mount yourself, coz it looks pretty good...

Yeah it now has 29" tyres 215/85r16 rather than the 26" 215/65r16..

You can go bigger than that but I have found that its a good size which gives 1.5" more ground clearence, improves the gear ratios in high box  without making low box ratios too high...

Yep all the welding and other bits have been done by me.

They are mitsubishi alloys,

They are mitsubishi alloys, 16" and 6" wide, they  were already on the car when I got it, I have seen others here in the UK with them also.

Engine choices in the UK are 1.8 and 2.0 gdi and 1.8mpi.

Mine is a 1.8gdi

Looking Good

Hi Andy, another Scot here (from near Glasgow) and another who bought his to get him through the mental winters we're starting to get here again.

Love what you did with the suspension, I've went the easy route and ordered shocks and springs with the lift built in.

Great wee machines these, far more capable than the landy driving lads give them credit for I've found. :)

Just need to teach myself spanish now to order stuff from that brazillian website, and I'm sorted!

Oh now then, i set about doing it myself as for one finding bits in the UK seemed impossible, two I do like a bit of tinkering about with stuff, and three it was cheaper..

Have you got the link to the store in brazil..?

I do miss my old landy disco, but must admit to liking the pinin and finding ways to improve it...

Have found it brilliant in the snow even with road tyres on, now that it has all terrain tyres on it should be even better.

The system is full stainless

The system is full stainless made and fitted by a local company.. I wanted the system to be as close to  the body as possible to avoid damage while offroading.

When first fitted we used the old cat as at that time it was ok, but after some wading the ceramic monolith started to crack up, thats why i went for a stainless monolith this time as its more resistant to thermal shock as it should expand and contract at the same rate as the stainless body.

The system uses 1.75" pipe, has no centre silencer, but uses a larger back box which is nicely tucked out of the way.

Could have gone for a bigger bore size but very happy with it as it is.

Regards the exhaust, thats something I fancy as well, as the stock exhaust looks really restrictive on the 1.8 engine I have. Good to know someone local to me is having a go with them, not just the lads the other side of the world! :)

Likewise billy, glad someone else is having a go too.

The previous exhaust wasn't really set up for offroading, it hung way too low for comfort...it was a powerflow stainless fitted by the previous owner, and i have to say that i would not  recommend them...

As for bore size not sure how much better it would have been with a 2" or bigger, but can tell you that the new vortex sports cat does seem to have improved things quite a bit although the old cat was totally pooped..

As my car is older than march 2001 it could be fitted with any cat if yours is newer you will be resticted by choice.

 

Be interesting to see how you get on with yours.

busy afternoon

Having moved the spring seat on the original struts, thought I would give them a whirl on the motor today...

Moved the seats up 45mm so that the top of the 29" tyres is level with the weld line of the seat.

Kept the stock springs the same length so they are under a little more preload than before.

There is now 10" of clearance under the front crossmember.

Ando,

Can you please give some more info on how you cut the spring seat and re-welded it higher? Im a bit sceptic to do it myself to be honest. Does the welding heat effect the shock by any chance? Did you use arc or co2 welding?

cut and weld

Cut the spring seat with an angle grinder so that it retained its tight grip on the strut. Made a note of its orientation and angle. Used a 150amp mig welder in 3 stages to minimise the heat. Have not seen any evidence of heat damaging the internals. As for height, I chose 45mm higher and cut half a coil off the bottoms of the springs to stop them binding. I am delighted with the results.

Are you happy with the articulation with stiffer springs?

I wanted to go even softer than standard and remove the swaybar (quick link style for offroad only)
lack or flex in the front end is the weak link in my rig now!
There is one spot on a hill climb i can not get past due to the lack of front end flex. aggravates me no end :) its the ONLY spot I am getting out done by my mate in his jeep. with any luck ill have 10" of shock travel instead of the 4" it now has in a couple of weeks, Ill be re attempting this hill again, and it BETTER make it this time :)

I do not intend to remove the

I do not intend to remove the sway bar, as much as I would like to due to insurance and MOT test issues. I would also think that the biggest thing to consider would be the limitations of the drive shafts and their safe working angles. Overall I wanted to get more ground clearance, and I think the 10 inch or 250mm I have now is enough for my needs. The increased spring preload is great on road and not too harsh when the going gets rougher.

Tyres

Ando, those look a lot like FTO alloys you have on there mate. Mind if I ask what tyres you're running?

I'm looking at those alloys as they are wider than the stock Pinin ones, and I want to put 235 Insa Turbo's on. Should be capable then of some fun in the snow right enough.

hey ando. ive been looking

hey ando. ive been looking lately at replacing my heavily battered sump guard.

i was wondering if i could get a few more details of yours.

like the grade of the steel used?

was it hot-rolled/cold-rolled? (if you know)

from experience would you recomend making one out of steel? or if you had the chance to redo it would you consider aluminium?

I constructed it from 3mm

I constructed it from 3mm mild steel.

My guess would be that it was hot rolled as it certainly wasn't "bright Steel"

I chose that thickness as I was confident that i would be able to bend it with the gas torch I have and a big hammer, while the finished product should be strong enough.

Steel was also cheap and if I should ever need to I would be able to weld it with my MIG.

I would still do the same again I think, although an aluminium version would be cool.
