Ok so I've been on here for a bit over a week, its about time to introduce myself.

I'm the proud new owner of a '99 Pajero iO 1.6L.

I lurked for around a week after I found my target vehicle, reading posts to confirm I was making the right decision. Got up at 4am to travel to sydney to purchase said vehicle. Worth every minute of sleep deprivation.

I've been a Mitsu gal for nearly 4 years now, having just retired my '01 Lancer from daily driving, and soon to be sold to recoup some of the money I owe for this baby ;)

It was the iO or a Vitara; I'm glad I made the right choice, and with the 4g18 sharing similarities with the 4g15, figured it was the way to go.

I mainly bought it for versatility. Trying to get dogs into a coupe and secured is just a nightmare! Plus, I can fit larger items in the back with ease (Non-folddown seats in the coupe sucked as well).

Main to-do's are a towbar and a bullbar. Maaaaybe a few light engine mods (still reseaching!) when I get some extra cash. Oh and some roofracks...

Not into off-roading (enough potholes in the roads I travel anyway!) but would like to go a bit of bush in it, prob just some good ol camping, nothing too rough. Unfortunately, she came with pretty standard shoes and I can't justify (or afford!) forking out for AT's atm. Maybe later down the track.

She's used as a daily drive and to drive into Newcastle for work, and has surprisingly agreeable fuel economy (getting under 10L/100KM at the moment, mostly highway driving).

All in all, I love her. Being up higher is awesome and makes me feel way more in control. She handles better than I would expect and isnt too bad on takeoff, although coming from a 1.5L Lancer, my standards are probably pretty low haha

I do have the dreaded flashing super select lights, but the old man and I are going to meet that head on sometime in the near future!

Pic taken the day I got her home

And why she is named the Angry Bird. Also reflects my driving habits (because I find myself being constantly pissed off by other road users)

Anyway, thats it for the night. Hope I can learn a lot more about these wonderful little vehicles in the near future (not enough of them around if you ask me!)

welcome!

the 1.6L is OK in the SWB but can be a tad slow towing - towbars pop up in wreckers and you will need a SWB towbar only - LWB and SWB bars are different.

there is a 4x4 wrecker in wyong with io's, mid coast wreckers also have a few io's too.

with the flashing lights - main thing to check is the vaccume lines to the front axle - if they get pulled off they will cause an error.

if flashing lights when in 2wd then it's likely either a shifter switch, or the front freewheel return spring or vaccume leak
if flashing when put into 4x4 then it's likely a front axle switch, or a vaccume leak.

the workshop manual in the "resournces" section of this board has a section on the 4x4 system in "front axle" that has a trouble shooting guide including testing the actuators for 12v feed with a multimeter.

below is the vaccume hose layout for the front axle - it looks complex but essentially it's just a vaccume from manifold at the top - and then a distribution network with 4 lines:

1- to vaccume resevoir tank (32094)

2 - breather (32905)

3 - activate front axle

4- deactiviate axle

any splint of fall off then the system won't work. - I often have the one on the manifold come off and the vaccume tank feed line come off the tank

.

Thanks guys :)

Thanks guys, I'm still enjoying, and hope to have many more joyful years with her.

Thanks bob_oz, I'm at Maitland so not a massive trip to travel to wyong, I'll have to look into it. It's not going to be towing anything much, a little 6x4 trailer at most. Thanks for the advice re SWB and LWB, I wouldn't have known that :) is it the same for the bull bars? bull bar isn't as high on the priorities list, I'm just very protective of her seeing I've come from a car so common it's not funny, to one I'd never even seen until I found it on Gumtree.

As for the flashing lights, it does it in 2wd. I've been reading a lot on the issue and have found a fair few different things it could be, so you've given me a very good place to start. I've already grabbed the service manual from here, as well as a pdf copy of the user manual, even though a hard copy came with the car. Im taking a drive to the old's this weekend (if it's not too miserable weather wise) and my dad's gonna chuck it on the hoist and hopefully we can track the issue down :)
