Hi there all,

I'm Bas.
I live in Belgium and been walking this earth since 32 years.

I have had a lot of cars for my age.(most of them honda  normal road cars)
2011 I sold my lancer evo and bougth a boat in stead.(Nice weather car wich I used only a few days a year)

So anno 2012 after digging myself in with my B18 powered family honda I said I needed a Jeep...

What's a Jeep?

a Jeep,a suburban,a diesel Jero?a Patrol?,...

research resaerch research learned me that a petrol powered small sized off-roader would be my best choice.
Unbraked towing ability of 750kg's(Belgian law)

So I found myself shopping for a Mitsu Pinin.
Ain't much pinin's in Belgium...

Eventually found a pinin LWB 2.0 GDI ready to be shipped to africa.
Pinin was in bad shape.

Tires bald,ABS fault,FW-bearings bad,Bodywork neglected for sereal years.

But I bought it and fixed-er-up-R

Been verry happy with the pinin since.
It's not the Big-Bad-Mofo off roader as we see here,it's just the common man's medium sized SUV.
It runs great, its NOT a diesel, got a leather interior,AC,wooden torino steering wheel. Just excellent!!!

I'll try to search some pictures this week.

Kind regards,
Bas

Welcome

Claude - I think he meant it was in such bad shape it wasn't fit for the road in Belgium and was to be shipped and sold in Africa.

Paul - where in Belgium are you? I also have a bit of history around there - lived in Brussels and Luxembourg for a while. I miss the specialist beer bars.... 1000 beers for sale, each one served in its own unique glass!

Indeed what Nzio says. Car

Indeed what Nzio says.

Car was not good enough to be sold to be used again in Belgium and should have been shipped to Africa.
Also because a pinin isn't a popular car here in Belgium. It's not a "real" offroader it's a woman's jeep...

So be it call me a woman,I love the pinin. End of story.

@Nzio: I'm from region Antwerp, near the Dutch border.

As for the Belgian beer,Yep we've got lots of it ;)
And indeed there are some beer bars(Café's) that serve verry much different belgian beers. I think we have one in Leuven that says it has ALL different Belgian beers. Don't know for sure, been a long time since I've been in Leuven.

Leuven

Leuven - yes long time since I was there too... 1990 I think it would have been when I visited some friends who lived there. All I remember of it was a very enjoyable night bar hopping around the part of town that has all the nightlife - 'Le Carre' I think the area is/was called? Another friend's brother worked in the diamond trade in Antwerp but I never went there myself.

22 years ago - crikey, getting old here...

Hi, Seems that the part of me

Hi,

Seems that the part of me living in belgium tends to be interesting to some ;)

To break all nice things apart: The weather in Belgium sucks bigtime!

Mussels and chips=> Mosselen met friet. Excellent choice.
BUT the mussels are actually from "Zeeland" Holland. Zeeuwse mosselen.
About 20min's from my house.

We do sometimes go there with our camper to go biking. Verry nice to go biking.(Belgium and holland are FLAT.)
Or we sometimes go there with our boat to go boating. And that's where the pinin comes in.

Dudes who say my pinin is a womans jeep mostly have a lifted Jero or Patrol diesel smoker.
I know that looks more beef and so on,but it's not what I needed.
I wanted a petrol powered car,because I don't like diesel,and I do not drive that much km's a year.

My choice was a suburban 454(95 model) or the pinin.
I made a wise choice.

And there you guys come in.
I read here to find stuff and parts to get my pinin "de-womanized"(LOL that should be a word)
Plans are(25mm strut lift,Astina fronts on the rear)
fit some 225/75/16's on some old supra rims I have here(8,5x16 ET24)
fit a roof rack(for shopping home-market for my drywall work at home)
Arch liners from a pinin warrior(UK)
And just for looks I would like to have a snorkel.Completely useless(for me),but I just want that...

Today I received my 2nd hand set mirrors,Mine were rusted internally,so didn't fold anymore.
Broke one of,so installed a 2nd hand pair of blue painted ones to match my bodywork.

Did make a boo-boo. Seems that the 99 version is different then my 2001 version.
Mirror base-plate is different.

I did some extra work and reused my baseplates, mounted on the new(2nd hand) achieved mirrors.

Result looks excellent.

This weekend I do promise to get some pictures fixed for you guys.
I'll make some time for that.

Kind regards

BTW:

The carré still exists.
Kortrij is Kortrijk.

wheels

You wrote : 8,5x16 ET24 wheel,  Do you think that they will fit on the car ? They may touch the rear guard on compression...

I know that some  225/75/16 fit on that car but a 225 on a 8.5 inch rim .... I am not sure that it is a good match??

wheelz

Hi Claud IO.

I do not understand what you mean by the touching of the rear guard in compression.

Can you try and explain to me?

Point is that I like the desingn of those wheels and I have them lying around here.
Only the centerbore is not correct(they from supra so 60,1mm Pinin is 67,1mm)
Therefore I need them to be bored out.(Can be done, won't cost as much as other wheels)

225 on a 8,5 should work I guess(On our former yota I had 205/55/16 mounted on these wich were stretched)
Should be a straight edge between tire side an wheel with 225/75/16
Not that balloon type of tire rim setup
My calculator tells me:

Inside of rim will move 3,4mm more inward to strut.
outside of rim will move 47,4mm outward.

I have no idea if that's wrong on a 4x4, but I try to look for wheels and tyres with the same width in tire and rim.

Is it better in your opinion to mount these on smaller rims?
Point beeing=> Mitsu rims with 6,5 width and ET46 are not that common here...
Most aftermarket rims are 7 wide and in my opinion don't look that good.

Kind regards

Ok, For the rear guard,I

Ok, For the rear guard,

I haven't measured this, maybe someone can confirm, one way or another, check this picture

You can see that the rear tyre just fit under the rear guard, and I think that your 8.5 inch rim might make the tyre to  touch the guard as it will be more out that the original rim.

Another point to check, in Australia the original rim is not 6.5 inch but 6 inch. If yours is 6.5 inch you are right by saying that your 8.5 inch rim will be 3 mm more in and 47 mm more out but if they are 6 inch these new measurement are going to be 10  mm more in and 54 mm more out.

10 mm more in is going to be very close to the front strut!! I have 6 inch rim and have a look how close is my front tyre to the strut.

The 225/75/16  probably fit on a 8.5 inch rim, but I wouldn't, (safe?) I would check the manufacturer recommendation before doing that, 6 to 7.5 inch is more in the norm.

The 225/75/16 on a 8.5 inch rim won't look too good either, but this is my taste!!

This picture show what my 225/75/16 look like on a 6 inch rim, imagine on a 8.5 inch rim, again visual effect only!

All this said, I never tried....other might have different view....and I could be wrong...ask my wife!

Happy io

OK point taken. Now I

OK point taken.

Now I understand what you where meaning.
I haven't thought of that with the wheels beeing wider the sidewall will also move outward.

My point was:
With a wider wheel the inside sidewall will become "more straight"(Vertical) to the wheels widht,so therefore will be "less mor likely" be rubbing the strut.

I did not take account of the width outward movement to go rubbing the rear guard.

So therefore point taken.

About the rims.
I do know for sure(99%) that my wheels alre stock and are 6,5 wide.
As I promised you guys I would post some pics I will remove a wheel and check again.

If 6 wide I rest my case and will not be able to fit the old supra rims.(As ET will move them so much closer to the strut they will rub.)

If 6,5 wide I'll do my best to make a complete picture flooded part of an how to,...

I have my own tire mounting machine and balancer,so trial and error is not a problem.
Only cost I have to make is the boring out(which I will do,because I do want to try)

About safe mounting.
I have a VW based buggy also.
The rear tires are 235/65/15 mounted on 10" wide wheels.
Tires look excellent,(Shapewise I mean).
No stretch on tire, bit off a balloon form still in tire.
That's why I thought that 225 on 8,5 wouldn't be wrong.

I know that I do ask alot of your forum, but I just like to be well informed.

anyhow:
Tires are ordered.(225/75/16) kumho road ventures.
Struts and spring ordered(4 weeks delivery,as not in stock)
Will do lift with those shock/spring mods.

Will get wheels bored out,

Will update you guys about lifting, tire stuff working or not,...

And defenatly will post pics this weekend!

Kind regards, and sorry again for the trouble!
Bas

First of all I stand

First of all I stand corrected on the stock wheel size on my pinin.

I beleived they were 6,5 wide, but they are 6" wide.

So that means that my calculations about wheel offset on the supra wheels will not be working...

Here are som pictures of the pinin on the drive-way.
as soon as I find time and a nice place to take some more pictures I'll post them also.

The tires ordered are road ventures KL71.
They look just that good!

But I guess it's back to the lab again to get them fitting my little Jero.

I'll also check the other set of wheels I have to check width and ET.
I had some 18" wheels mounted with 245/40/18's
(Slightly smaller diameter of wheel)(Should have been 245/45/18,but had no other tires at the time lying around in my dungeon)

Whoa, that is a nice inside! and nice blue colour, I don't think that we have much leather seat in Australia...

You wrote,

"But I guess it's back to the lab again to get them fitting my little Jero."

I am not sure if you mean that you have to think how to do it or other!! but now that you are sure about having the 6 inch rim, your 225/75/16 should just fit nicely on them,  the only problem could be the sort of front strut that you car have. The 2002 model in Australia have the front strut that is good for this  tyres size but you may have another type...

A few io, in Australia and NZ have the 225/75/16 on original rim and are happy with them (like mine!) Not all 225/75/16 have the exact same size, and some are slightly touching in full lock.

Nice...

Looks a very nice example you got there.

I have the KL71s on 6.5" rims (from Mitsi FTO). When brand new they touched a very slight amount at full lock going into a driveway, but that stopped within a month so was obviously just the top couple of mm. I'm very happy with them. As Claude says - check your strut pan height as we did have a UK guy on here a while ago who had a later model car like yours with the low spring pan that wouldn't take these tyres.

.

That is a VERY nice looking blue on that car. I dont think I have seen an IO like that before.  A leather interior would be awesome, but wouldnt last long with the way I treat me car, lol.

Also, that is quite the funny looking tow ball you have.  I dont think I have seen one like that before....

With back to the lab I

With back to the lab I mean:

I'll have to think about what to do to get the tires on my car.

Point beeing: We have to go to a yearly car check thing where they look at your car to see if it's in good order and safe to drive...
Some rules say: You will not lift your car,you will not mount other tires, wheels that stick out,or are bigger,...

So I want to keep my stock rims with the OEM tire size for going to there.

The supra rims I have are(in my opinion) nice looking wheels that would look fine under the pinin(dished rim)

Not using them,or my stock rims would mean=> Buying some other rims to mount the tires.
Steel rims don't look that nice in my opinion.
Some new rims are an other option, but do cost some extra money if I want some good-looking rims.

So in that way I mean it's back to the lab to put the pinin in my garage and start doing some measuring to see if the supra rims will or will not clear the pan and strut.

When I do that i'll check if I have the "low" or "high" strut and add the data in the strut data thread.

The blue is indeed a nice colour for the pinin.
I also like it.
The leather is also a plus.(I have to kids(4&6) who like to make a mess out of everything sometimes.
So leather cleans waaaaaaaaaaaay easier then fabric seats.

The tow ball is just a stock tow ball.
I do not understand what you mean with it beeing funny?
Everybody here has "a stick with a ball" towbar.

Now i'm off to the mitsu-stealer to get my parts to get the flashing centre diff light fixed.

Kind regards,
Bas

tow ball

The tow ball in Europe looks...like yours, but here we have a different system, stronger (I think!) and it is made differently, see picture (it might even look "funny" to you!! The standard 50 mm tow ball is rated at 3500 kg pulling (this rating is from memory, I could be wrong...)

More common system in Europe

For your rim, sorry I don't mean to spoil the fun....I understand the yearly inspection, but I think that the front might be a problem too, again I don't mean to spoil the fun...but if the original rim have the tyres just clear, or slightly touch, in full lock, your rim that fit more inside is going to touch a lot more.

This said, you have the rim, it won't be much "euro" to get, at least, one modified (center) to give it a go.

Hi, Your tow ball looks more

Hi,

Your tow ball looks more like a hitch, bolted system.

And again with our laws we are stuck to some limits "the law" tells us.

My maximum to tow is 750kg with an unbraked trailer(my boat) and 1400kg's when the trailer has brakes,so no need to put on extreme tow bars,...

The "Big" Jero has a capacity of towing 3500kg's, but also has a similar tow bar design here.

Yesterday I fixed my center diff blinking light problem, defective sensor.
If you want  the OEM mitsu numbers I can post them.(Europe)

In the meantime I did some test fitting with the supra wheels,...

Taking all things in notice I'll be ordering some new wheel to get the KL71's on.
I want to keep my stock wheels with the stock tire size to go to our annual Vehicle teardown for beeing OK with the law.

Quick question about balancing wheels: Do you guys still use balancing weights on the wheel or is there someone who uses balancing beads inside the tire(Truck style)

On my stock tires I used weights(which worked), but on the 225/75/16 maybe balancing beads could work also.
I have no idea.

And everytime I still am amazed by the amount of info I can find here.
Damn, too much to read, and so little time for me to absorb...
But I would like to find some more info about those TR4's from brazil. Insane looks!!!

Friend of mine just bought a LR90 pick-up and laughed at my little jero...Not that nice of him...My plan now becomes to teach him wrong...and when I want something itt'l better work....*priest mode ON*...Thou shall not laugh at The Jero. The Jero will Pearl Harbor your UK defender...Time will tell...*Priest mode OUT*

update time. Scored a set of

update time.

Scored a set of stock pinin wheels on ebay.
Centercaps are missing, but i'll source some on the bay and in the meantime i will use mine from my stock ones.

today I mounted the tires.
I expected some trouble as those MT tires are quite heavy and have verry thick beads.
So I thought they could stress out my plastic mounting head on my tire mounting machine, but all went well.
Went on like a dream,no trouble at all.

The balancing was also quite surprising. Didn't have to use that much weight to get them fully balanced, which also surprised me because of the weight of the tire.

So thus far i'm happy.

Pics will come this weekend.

I also received my order today with the shocks and springs to give it the "std new style strut lift with BA astina rears"
So when I start to do that job I'll add my strut data in the strut data topic as as further reference for EU pinin drivers.

Kind regards

As promised: Wheels and tires

As promised:

Wheels and tires mounted, waiting to be put on.

And I had some free time,so I did some work allready.

Removed the rear springs and put the new springs in.

I guess my old ones were pretty sagged,as I got a raise in height of 6cm after putting in the springs. I guess they will need some time to set themselves and get a bit lower in time.

Some data:

                    RR           LR
std              76,5          77
Springs     82,5          83
Wheels      86             86,5

Heights measured from ground through centercap to fender

Stock spring height 31cm New astina's 34cm

Piccies:

So that's it for now.
Now I have to wait untill the new bumpstops arrive for my front shocks.
Then I can do the front end. struts, bumps, right wheel bearing has to be changed also.

Kind regards,
Bas
