What do you guys do to preserve settings (like ECU mostly) when taking out the battery?

Do it right, use Hammerite.

Why simpify when it is simpler to complicate.

There are gadgets to buy that are like a charger and plug into mains that give a trickle current to maintain voltage while the battery is out but I wondered if anybody used them.

nope

only use for sub-zero temps as bat will die of if you rarely if ever use the vehicle.

in those cases fit one of these:

May have our wires crossed.  I am talking about something that we attach to the battery leads while the battery os off the car as I have some rust issues to attend to in the engine bay.  I want to keep the ECU and Radio settings while the battery is temporarily out.
