G'Day all,

I'm heading up the Birdsville track (again), but this time in my io.  Leaving from the South Australian side on the first week of the June/July school holidays.  It's not going to be a long trip, but anyone interested can join me for some or all of the days.

The planned dates are as follows:
Sunday 1st July Stay at Marree
Monday 2nd July Stay at Birdsville
Tuesday 3rd July Stay at Birdsville
Wednesday 4th July Stay at Copley

I'll be leaving Adelaide on the 30th June and returning on the 5th of July.  However, I'm pretty flexible on my departure point and if anyone needs an extra day of travel either to Marree, or back from Copley.

I may be staying an extra night in the Flinders on the way home too.  The other dates (above) are pretty well locked in.  We'll be staying in caravan park style accomodation, so no need to take bulky tents etc, unless you want.  So far, it's me with a couple of my kids (maybe the missus) and another family of three in a Suzuki SX4 off road version.

The 3rd of July will be spent playing in a big sand pit...aka the Simpson, where I hope to be able to get my io on top of Big Red.  (I've done it in a diesel Captiva which lacked ground clearance...BUT had a lot more torque than the io and wasn't running mud tyres).  Will be fun trying anyway.

So...who's up for it?  Any takers?

Fab io.

Don't worry...there will be

Don't worry...there will be heaps of photos, and videos, and more photos.  I'll probably compile them into a YouTube clip and post the link into this thread on my return.

Til then....enjoy this one which was my first attempt at Big Red in the Captiva.  I almost made it to the top but ran out of clearance when the front wheels dropped into another cars previous ruts.  I've since found out that the left track is the harder one.  On my second and successful attempt, I took the middle track.  Sorry no video of that one.

I'm keen, but that's all.

I work every monday evening (except public holidays). So won't be able to make, unfortunate though it is.

Hope the trip is great.

No worries Isaac. We'll have

No worries Isaac.

We'll have to plan an Adelaide get together at some stage.  Even if we just go up to Saunders Gorge for the day or something.

Simpson crossing

West to east is easy, rig road instead of french line easier still. Would make a great io trip, maybe plan another 12 months ahead.

Claudio, with 2x20L you'd make it easy!

How cool would that be

How cool would that be Bob.

Imagine the look on other people's faces as they see a line of dehydrated NJ Pajero's coming across the Simpson.

I'd be up for it.  Would make for a great gathering.

Simpson crossing

It's been done by an Io before - I read this guy's write up before buying an io. (bottom of page)

http://forums.overlander.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=44241&start=30

I've done the simpson in an old TD Rocky so an Io would breeze it.

would be great to do a Maree - coward springs - William Creek - Cooper Peedy - Dalhousie springs - rig road - Big Red - Birdsville - Maree circiut. I'd beheading in either Alice or over the - Copley - Yunta - Broken Hill link road.

i would be keen for any trip,

i would be keen for any trip, provided i had enough time to prepare and budget for it. as it stands now im STILL trying to get money together for new tyres. maybe we should organise a meetup for next summer or something. that way everyone will know and have a higher chance of more people coming???

Well looks like my family of 2 is shortly going to be a family of 3, so I might be tied down for a while.

I'll be heading to cairns november for the eclipse so maybe late next year, should give us enough time to plan, and with everyone runing roughly the same tyres will make puncture repair a lot easier!
