Finally got around to the wreckers yesterday,  scored the lsd out of a 5 door io, and its front struts for a spring lift and maybe extenders.  Also took the front springs out of a the 323 that suits our rear.

Best thing, it all cost only 135 bucks.

With any luck it will all be fitted by next sunday.

Sweet!

Awesome score! Can't wait to see the results - particularly to see how level it is with astina / older 5 door iO spring combo in a 3 door - sounds like the best budget lift option.

Well I put in the rear springs, they were only about 10mm taller then my IO ones, which was a bit of a let down. Maybe they done compress as much, dont know as I forgot to take a before measurement! HAHA!

My rear is now 450mm from the centre of the wheen to the arch.  Can someone with a stock 3 door let me know their distance?

Std IO Height

Have a look as I made a post "Standard IO Height" asking the same questions after I did my lift coils a couple weeks ago. Std height +-425mm from centre cap to arch. Mine is 470 front & 500 at the rear (+-75mm lift)

I did see that, I was unsure if that was front or rear, or are they meant to be the same?

Height

I rechecked mine, and I have 450mm on both rear and the RHF and 5 mm more on the LHF. Would you be the lucky one to have bought lowered mazda spring?

I am pretty sure they were stock springs, but maybe they have just sagged alot?  I can tell the rear is deffinately lifted just from looking at it, but it doesnt seem like much.  If the front springs bring the front up hieghter I think Ill just make some nylon spacers for the rear springs.

BA springs

From my lift thread - BA springs on the right are 335mm vs 305mm for standard. Are you sure you got the springs off the right model Mazda?

lift

Oh - is the 10mm the lift result? I thought he was talking about the uncompressed springs.

Either way this seems wrong - I got 37 & 38mm lift from fitting the BA springs. Of course mine's a 5 door, different year, so who knows if the starting point is the same? What's the length of the original uncompressed springs you took out?

something wrong

Fully agree, something wrong!  Mine have 450mm (center of the wheel to  the guard) without mods. Are we going to discover some more strange design.

My advices are,

Because we are 100% sure that the 323 mazda is the same as the rear raise io spring (from kingspring listing, and tested right here!), measure again now, put the original back in and measure again. If you find the same...bring them back to the wrecker.

When you have the mazda spring out, put it side to side with the original one, the mazda have an extra half turn more than the original io spring (see picture just above), if it doesn't, you have the wrong spring or it has been cut to lower the front of the mazda. (we try to go higher, but some like it lower!)

Let us know,

Happy io.

The spring itself was 10mm higher, althought there is definately a visual lift to the car and I am only at 450mm from centre of the wheel now. . Ill post a photo when I am home from work.

I am quite certain I took them from the correct model of mazda, this is the one I took it from I beleive http://www.pickapartrockhampton.com.au/whats-available/?vehicle=2118 . They only cost 30 bucks for a pair so I dont mind going back if they were the wrong ones.

spring

I dont know if that model has them or not but if I was you I'd pull one out again and measure it uncompressed and see if its the same length as mine at 335mm - only a 15m job....

spring

There is 2 different type of 95 mazda, maybe there are the wrong one?

Here is the kingspring catalogue link, you need the KFFS 90:http://www.kingsprings.com/catalogue/kings_master_catalogue.pdf

I am sure that the wrecker will be happy to exchange...

Happy io...soon:)

10mm?

Looks like more than 10mm to me, but camera angles can be deceiving!

The king springs catalog says the astina has different springs.

lifted or not lifted

Lifted or not lifted that is the question:) Anyone wants to put money on it! I have just check you picture and I recognised the driveway, yes that is the same as the one in your build thread, same position, same angle (second one, for felies) and... it doesn't look lifted:(   The top of the rear bumper line up with the top of the tyres on both pictures, and the lower part of the car is just a bit higher than the middle of the wheel. Again, I have been wrong before...and it is not very visible.

Thats the before pic

I think that pic is the same as the build thread, but the 'after' pic on the grass looks like it is lifted.

I happened to buy some BA springs today, though I didn't see the car - they were in a wreckers stock. He wouldn't sell the springs alone, so they are still on the struts. I'll play with them on the weekend hopefully.

The king springs catalogue indicates the KFFS90 fits the 4 cyl 1.6 and 1.8 astina's, but the BA 2.0 (V6?) is different. Hopefully mine will be the right ones!

Now to do the front... I investigated some strut spacers at a 4WD workshop today, and he advised against them due to roadworthy issues. I think it might be King Springs or older 5 door iO springs for me.

So much for not spending money on my car at the moment!!!

lifted or not

Yes I just realised my mistake, and tried to "edit it" but you beat me to itsmileyBeing the same pictures, of course it does look the same...I go and hide...blush

Natsterrr, If you check the picture above, the one with the mazda spring, you could compare the end bit of the spring to see if they are the same position, I hope that you have the good one...

Relieved

Here are the pics of the BA springs.

On the left is the rear spring from a 5 door iO, BA front on the right.

5 Door iO rear spring = 310mm @ 12mm diameter

BA astina front spring = 336mm @ 13mm diameter

My BA spring appears to have half a turn less than NZIO's did, but it is the same length.

Sitting next to each other, 25 or 26mm looks like nothing, but that is pretty much what I'm hoping for in terms of overall lift.

When I change them over in the car I'll do a measurement of the stock 3 door rear springs FYI.

All done, got about 20mm

All done, got barely 20mm lift, bit of a let down considering NZIOs results.

Might end up buying some of those king springs.

Looks alright

It looks reasonable level at least. And if you had standard tyres/wheels it would be more noticeable. Not bad for $135.

You should take it to some regular tracks and see what difference it makes off road.

Actually the lift only cost $60, 135 included the lsd!

I cant really do much with it atm as the old bump stops came apart when I did the swap over, and as my car was half apart at the time I couldnt drive anywhere to buy new ones.  So I have to fit new ones before I can really go out and play.
