I know that you can buy a snorkel in Brazil for the IO.

Will probably be in Brazil in next year or two where I'll try to pick one up!

Keep me posted though as I can't wait that long!

How are you doing it

How are you doing it EBS?

pics pics pics! ! !  :) be good to see.

Id love one of those Brazilian ones! if I still dont have one by the time you are in brasil ill have to get you to grab one for me :)

Im considering drawing one up on the computer and making it in carbon fiber, probably a stupid idea that will be far more work than its worth, not to mention ill smash it off road :) but im an idiot and a sucker for punishment :)

To install the snorkel you would just plumb it up to the airbox, remove the intake plastic you can see that currently goes to the front of the car, just under the bonnet (when closed) and clamp hosing from the snorkel to it.

yeah thats exactly what i thought you would have to to, but what side would you run the snorkel out of. would you have the snorkel on the right side of the picture(outside the car)...via a flexi hose to bring it around or manouvre a hose a way around the other engine compnents through to the left side of the car ie driver side...

snorkel

Hi Guys,

I'm going for something different. I'm only building a snorkel that feeds from the back corner of the engine bay - this will be Ok for river crossings up to windscreen level, beyond that I recon is really too deep for an Io.

I'm going to put a T-piece and valve on the air intake trumpet and route a heavy duty hose around to behind the strut tower. I'll need to operate this by opening the bonnet but it will at least keep the good cold air intake as standard.

crap pic but gets the idea across

Ive had water splash into my airbox on more than one occasion, so for me i need to relocate as high as possible, your halfway there already bob :) I am considering two options... There are pros and cons for each.

1. To have a shorter style like the ones from brazil and just drill a hole straight through both panels towards the back of the front side panel, then run a flexi hose around to the existing intake hole.

Pros:

a) Simple angles for drilling and hard to get it wrong.

Cons:

a) Flexi hose will be in close proximity to the hottest part of the engine (the extractors) which may melt a plastic hose or affect air intake temperature.

b) I will neet to neaten up the intake hole to be able to clamp it properly by shaving off some plastic from around the hole.

or

2. To run the snorkel along towards the front of the panel and drill a new hole directly into the side of the airbox, then cap off the existing hole.

Pros:

a) Looks heaps better on the outside and more room in the engine bay.

b) I wont have to use messy annoying flexi hose.

c) Intake air will be as cold as possible which will be good for fuel combustion and economy.

Cons:

a) Angles to drill into the airbox will be awkward and if i dont get it right the whole thing will be stuffed.

b) Much more work and much more damage to stock components.

Gees they dont make it too easy do they!! I would love to hear anyone elses opinions or if anyone has any questions i will be glad to reply. :)

option 2

yeah thought option 2 would be a better option, but i thought instead of drilling a new hole in the air box, just flip the airbox around so the whole is on the other side and then manually fixing the airbox to where its screwed onto the chassis. it would be easier than having to drill a new one and capping the other one

option 2

..or combine the two

I'd be keen to find out how much space is between the outer guard pannel and the inner engine bay pannel.

if there is enough room you could drill a circular hole straight through the inner engine bay pannel next to the air cleaner with a hole saw, take off the guard and run a flexi hose with a 90deg bend up inside the guard towards the back and come out through the top back section of the outer guard skin with another 90 into a conventional snorkel setup.

as far as lining up the hole into the air cleaner, once the guard is off, line up with a hole saw and drill through the first hole back into the aircleaner and glue in some pipe etc.

If you don't mind cutting your pannels etc this would be the way to go - i'm not wanting to cut anything until I find a really OME looking snorkel.

I totally agree with the heat issues running near the exaust however i was going for some solid pipe i.e. thick HDPE or steel with extractor wrap etc.

so then the pipng will be

so then the pipng will be inside the panels so youll have the snorkel coming out closer to the door rather than the front side of the wheel arch?

not a bad idea...

Drilling tru both panels at the front and back seems alot of work.Ill go with the option that it passes behind the strut. The heat issue is no problem. Why not use the flex pipe they use in exhausts? I deal with them every day. You must just get a long enough. That will resist heat and can bend to a certain extent?
