Hi all. I am from Redcliffe, on Brisbanes Northside. We have just bought our first IO...a stock standard 2002 3 door manual. Haven't seen many IO's before, so really don't know much about them, but it was in too good a condition to pass up for the right price. We have been looking for a 4x4 for a while so that we are able to go & do a bit of decent beach fishing. We are slowly doing it up. Have had the windows tinted, and getting bigger tyres & mags fitted on the weekend. Will be posting pics when I get it done :)

So glad to have found this site, who here is from Brisbane?

Welcome

No, I'm not from Brisbane, I'm not even from Australia, but welcome anyway.

You need to be careful when fitting bigger tires - check the clearance between the front spring pan and the tires currently fitted - some cars have struts where the pan is very close to the tire and limits the size tire that will fit.

Thanks for the welcome. We

Thanks for the welcome. We made sure that we got it checked out properly before we went bigger :) just to make sure it could take the bigger tyres. It was all fine, they fit great & it drives like a dream. We fitted the stereo on the weekend, tried to fit remote central locking, but there isn't enough clearance inside the drivers door to fit the actuator. So still trying to find a way to fit it. Any ideas?

Meh..

I didn't know there was a model without central locking - mine came with it and also keyless entry - the manuals do show a version without the keyless entry, but I thought they all had the central locking, especially since on my car, the locks can only be controlled from the driver's door - the switches that were normally be on the passenger and tail gate were never fitted.

Welcome!!

Hi,

welcome!

several owners in Brisbane, most north side I'm down on Mt Tamborine.

Is your io red?

no idea about the central locking issue as 99.99% of io's out there have it standard, never seen one without it.

looking at the catalogue it looks like ALL io's in australia 2000 onwards have central locking built into the door locks - do you have a wiring harness plugging into the door latch?

Our io is white. It has

Our io is white. It does have central locking, but by key only. I would really like to be able hook up a remote system like all our other cars have had. But this one is such a challange.

Welcome!

Redcliffe aye! I'm like 15 minutes from you with a 5 dr white IO ;) Bracken Ridge.

Should come along to a 4x4 day in the near future! Apologies if you have ever been next to a beat up white 5dr IO screaming it's ass off on the highway deafening small children... Very loud you'll hear us from yours.

Happy to duck around and help with whatever if you intend doing some of the stuff yourself.

Cheers,

Simmo

This is where the confusion starts.

What you have is central locking, what you want is keyless entry - this is as simple as purchasing a keyless entry system (or an alarm system with keyless entry) mounting it under the dash where there is lots of room and tieing it into the existing central locking system - there is no need to fit new actuators as long as the old actuators are functional.

One word of caution - the lock control outputs of the keyless entry system need to be wired into the keyswitch input of the Mitsubishi ETACS - if you attempt to drive the actuators directly you will burn the ETACS module.

keyless entry

i would be willing to bet $20 that your io HAS keyless entry but you are missing the fob.

you would likely be able to buy a new fob and code it to your car.

a trip to any mitsubishi dealer (not zupps) would confirm and supply you with a fob at likely a huge cost - or ebay one, or get one second hand.

There are some threads on coding the new fob into your car - i recon if you start the code in sequence your car will respond confirming it is awaiting a fob reply thus confirming you DO have keyless entry in the vehicle.

Thanks so much for the info.

Thanks so much for the info. It had 1 original key when we bought it, but maybe the original owners lost the fob. I think we might take a trip to mitsubishi & see what we can find out :) thanks for the tips guys.
