I have done some research to increase the power/torque of my 2 ltr engine. The replacement of the exhaust system by a high flow one seem to be a favorite one, at least on the net (mainly for the lancer). I can have the wildcat extractors from ebay, no pacemaker:(

I went to 2 exhaust places and got two different choices, one is telling me go for the 2 and 1/4 inch; the other is telling me to go for the 2 inch, as it will be a better system overall, low and high rev, while the 2 and 1/4 inch will improve mainly the higher rev.....not really what I prefer.

Anyone have some idea...? I will do other mod, but I choose to do the exhaust first (good move?)

Happy io.

I dont know how much extra performance you will get out of an exhuast mod without also freeing up the intake.  Also, from my experiance back when I was into the hooning and such. I would personally stick with a 2" for a 2L.  Hell I only went 2.25" for my 2.5L impreza.

I would also consider how much noise the extra size will make.

p.s  Thanks for giving me more reasons to spend money on the IO!!!!

exhaust

What is standard width? 2 inches sounds like plenty for a NA 2 litre.

If you're staying with the standard exhaust manifold and not planning more tuning then I wouldn't think you'd get much benefit from increasing the exhaust size any more than a 1/4 inch.

Edit to add... are you saying that you will buy the eBay extractors also? If so, then surely just match exhaust diameter to the size of the exit off those?

2 inch or 2.25 ?

Thanks,

The person who advised me for the 2.25 inch can do the extractors as well. The other person who advised me for the 2 inch could do the extractors as well but told me that he was happy to fit the extractors from ebay, or me to fit them to save a bit of money, he tried to get the wildcat extractors but got told that they were not available, still they are for sale on ebay? so he is going to do some research, me too!

It looks like the 2 inch might be the go...and the extractors on ebay have a 2 inch outlet...so I think you are right...

Yes I intend to to something with the inlet manifold too...and a bit more....to be continued...

Before going ahead, I am going to check the cost of testing the power of the car, a before and after figure could be interesting...

tuning

...and will you need to remap to get the benefits of the inlet/exhaust mods.... .= aftermarket ECU.... ...MAF... etc etc...are you sure you want to step out onto this slippery slope Claude? ;)

more mods

Why slippery? No not 100% sure....I am still searching for the advantage and the disadvantage and the total cost against everything (no point spending that much for 10% more guts). My first level was to do the exhaust, then a cold air filter (k&n filter and snorkel) and see how it goes, I might be happy with that. I know that only the piggy back ecu will give me the full advantages of the 2 mods (and the other mods if I decide to do them) but that would be after and they are not a must have....

The bigger tyres made my car wandering a little, now fixed, and they chew a bit of the power of the engine...so I am working on that one:)

I wish I were 100% sure!!! (I am waiting to see what Bob got up his sleeve too!)

location of mods

Claude IO

Am looking to do some mods to my vehicle because my exhaust is clogged.

I want to do a cold air intake and exhaust change but i am not getting the sites to or for io.

Do you have any recommendations?

A high flow exhaust does give a bit more power, better responsive engine but it is not going to be a 50 % increase. I have put the dyno test on my built thread. These were the result on my car, fitted with the 2 litre engine.

As for a cold air intake, I used a K&N pod filter that give a nice noise, a bit more responsive engine but again don't expect 50 % power increase. I have since removed my pod filter as I do lots of 4x4, and have fitted a snorkel.  If water get into the pod, it won't slow the water getting into the engine, the original air filter box will (to some level, it is not a waterproof system at all)

You have some picture of the pod in my built thread, these can be found on ebay or other.

Hope this help

OK - still not 100% confirmed however supplier is open to fitting to an io.

Kit uses stock motor and runs at 7psi max, no need to intercool if you don't want and requires a piggyback ECU. would benefit from extractors, bored throttleboddy and polished intake and uprated fuel pressure regulator however OK if you don't want to push it.

provides sizable increase in bottom end torque and a noticable increase in peak power however can be run in a mild configuration - no major heat issues as with turbos and as we drive 4wd's the compliancing issues are much easier with a 4wd instead of a car.

I am moving my powersteering to run off the alternator belt on the inlet side of the block, raptor unit will mount into powersteering location on exhaust side and run off ac belt with idler. retains original air cleaner, manifolds and only requires minimal plumbing mods. reliable in dusty conditions and engine will still run fine with unit not operating as it is a centrifugal type and not a roots type that will block inlet if belt snaps etc.

whoaaaa

F@#$K, this is a major power increase, it is a good thing that the lancer got the same engine, or it would have been...a bit more expensive...still with the piggy back ecu and extra tunning....and the io is probably going to need some type of wings smiley or a wing suit...but whoaa:) Imagine this set up with lower gear....F@#$K.  Quick give me my pill...yes

Sleep tight, Happy io...

No air con?

If you can figure out how to run an air conditioner as well then it would be perfect.

Size is not important; it's how you use it that matters!

Ah I see

I figured that you had thought of that wink   - will be interesting to see how it goes.

Today I did some off roading, and for the first time (first time that didn't involve a trailer), I found myself struggling for torque. It was a particularly steep rock step, but managed to get up. A little more oomph would have been nice. It will take a lot more of those moments to make me want to do something this drastic to my iO though, but hopefully it will work out for you - and when the day comes others can follow your lead.

Air con problem

I had the same question with the aircon? But you still have the option for the electric aircon that does not run off your motor so it doesnt take power. They are fitted to the late 2007 model cars (Not the IO's) so thats why you always get the snobs driving with closed windows because the motor/power allows it. On my 1.6 I seldomly drive with the aircon on as it pulls my motor dead. crying something to think about??

Cheers 4 eers
