Hi guys,

Does anyone know how to enable the sigarette lighter to have power when the car is off? I want to be able to charge my phone/have a fridge plugged in while the car is off.

.

My guess is that you will have to change the wiring. Maybe a second battery system will be safer.

I would not recommend that.

As Claude has already pointed out, you will need to do some rewiring, and like Claude, I would suggest a second battery system to reduce the likelihood of draining your starting battery.

Yes I know your fridge will most likely have a low battery cut out, but starting batteries are meant for "cycling service" and you will end up destroying it - a separate deep cycle battery with a DC~DC charging system (not a isolating solenoid) is the way to go.

Hi Guys,   Thx for the advice

Hi Guys,

Thx for the advice - i agree that a fridge will be a bit too much on my normal battery.

However I would like to charge my cellphone while the car is off, I reckon it won't drain too much - is a major rewiring needed or is it a quick fix? Any ideas of where to start?

Take it to an electrician.

You need to find the wire that feeds the outlet, disconnect it from it's source and then connect it to a fused, always live circuit.

quick fix

If you cannot find a permanent feed and do the soldering yourself, you could get one of those and connect it to your battery directly. Yes, not very practical to connect every time but very cheap and easy to use.

If you are a bit more elec minded, check my built thread, post 175. This work very well on most "toy" but didn't work on my Samsung tablet but all other.

ACC position.

The cigarette lighter outlets should be live with the key in the accessory position - wouldn't it be simpler to just use that?

My plan

Thanks Claude, really impressed by your build. A bit scared that the same mod bug bites me and that I also cant stop ti kering ;)

What I was thinking now is to check on the fuse box under the steering wheel which fuses are live when the car is turned off. Then all I need to do is to install a ensure wire between the live fuse mount and the siggarette lighter fuse mount.I will just need to take care and ensure that the current doesn't bypass any fuse
